An American company has developed a technique that it says can make bread stay mould-free for 60 days.
The bread is zapped in a sophisticated microwave array which kills the spores that cause the problem.
The company claims it could significantly reduce the amount of wasted bread - in the UK alone, almost a third of loaves purchased.
The technique can also be used with a wide range of foods including fresh turkey and many fruits and vegetables.
World of wasteFood waste is a massive problem in most developed countries. In the US, figures released this year suggest that the average American family throws away 40% of the food they purchase - which adds up to $165bn (?102bn) annually.
Bread is a major culprit, with 32% of loaves purchased in the UK thrown out as waste when they could be eaten, according to figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
One of the biggest threats to bread is mould. As loaves are usually wrapped in plastic, any water in the bread that evaporates from within is trapped and makes the surface moist. This provides excellent growing conditions for Rhizopus stolonifer, the fungus that leads to mould.
In normal conditions, bread will go mouldy in around 10 days.
But an American company called Microzap says it has developed a technique that will keep the bread mould free for two months.
At its laboratory on the campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, chief executive Don Stull showed off the long, metallic microwave device that resembles an industrial production line. Originally designed to kill bacteria such as MRSA and salmonella, the researchers discovered it could kill the mould spores in bread in around 10 seconds.
"We treated a slice of bread in the device, we then checked the mould that was in that bread over time against a control, " he explained.
"And at 60 days it had the same mould content as it had when it came out of the oven."
Question of tasteThe machine the team has built uses much the same technology as found in commercial microwaves - but with some important differences, according to Mr Stull.
"We introduce the microwave frequencies in different ways, through a slotted radiator. We get a basically homogeneous signal density in our chamber - in other words, we don't get the hot and cold spots you get in your home microwave."
Continue reading the main storySource: The Federation of Bakers
The company's device has attracted plenty of interest from bread manufacturers - but it is worried that it could push up costs in an industry where margins are very tight.
And there is also a concern that consumers might not take to bread that lasts for so long. Mr Stull acknowledges it might be difficult to convince some people of the benefits.
"We'll have to get some consumer acceptance of that," he said. "Most people do it by feel and if you still have that quality feel they probably will accept it. "
Mr Stull believes that the technology could impact bread in other ways. He said that bread manufacturers added lots of preservatives to try and fight mould, but then must add extra chemicals to mask the taste of the preservatives. If bakers were able to use the microwave technology, they would be able to avoid these additives.
While a wholesale change in the bread industry might be difficult to achieve, there may be more potential with other foods, including ground turkey.
In 2011, food giant Cargill had to recall 16 million kg of the product after a salmonella outbreak. Mr Stull believes that using microwaves would be an effective way of treating this and several other products ranging from jalapenos to pet foods.
The only fruit that his device was unable to treat effectively were cantaloupes.
"We've used our tumbler machine to treat them, he says "but you can't tumble cantaloupes because they damage."

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) ? The putt was meaningless because it was the final hole of a pro-am in what amounts to an 18-man exhibition at the end of the year, even though ranking points are available at the World Challenge. But it was hard not to look at the end of the putter pressed into the belly of Keegan Bradley.
The decision to ban the anchor stroke used for belly putters and broom-handle putters was not because of Bradley, even though he became the face of a style that was gaining popularity, not to mention credibility.
Bradley became the first player to win a major using the belly putter when he rammed in a 35-foot birdie putt on the 17th at Atlanta Athletic Club in 2011 during a remarkable comeback. It was in the news conference after the PGA Championship that Bradley spoke about a number of players on the Nationwide Tour who were using belly putters. The next year, Webb Simpson and Ernie Els won majors with a belly putter.
The U.S. Golf Association and Royal & Ancient, who announced Wednesday a proposed rule that would ban anchoring the club to the body, said the major champions were only part of what got their attention. Mike Davis of the USGA and Peter Dawson of the R&A both spoke to a spike in number of players using such putting strokes, how it trickled down to younger golfers, and their concern that the stroke was taking too much of the skill out of the game.
Players could still use a broom-handle or belly putter ? as long as it is not pressed against their body to create the effect of a hinge.
"We believe a player should hold the club away from his body and swing it freely," Davis said. "Golf is a game of skill and challenge, and we think that's an important part of it."
What's next?
As for the rule, the governing bodies will take comments over the next three months to see if it needs to be changed, scrapped or whether the proposal is fine the way it is. Then, it would be approved by the organizations, though it would not take effect until 2016.
What's next for Bradley?
"I'm going to have to really in the next couple of years figure out a way that's going to be best for me to putt," Bradley said.
He might end up shaving a few inches off the putter so the stroke is similar, except that it doesn't press against his stomach. Fred Couples has a belly putter that rests against his stomach, but the butt of the club moves freely. It is not hinged. Couples was not sure if that would be legal under the new rule, though he could just imagine the number of phone calls if he was shown on TV using that stroke.
Then again, the odds of the 53-year-old Couples even playing the Champions Tour in 2016 was enough to make him laugh.
U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson already has been using a short putter while at home, and he said he would continue to make the transition and go to the conventional putter when he feels comfortable with it. Bradley has been using a belly putter since he was at college, and he laments the five years of practice with it going to waste.
"Who knows? Maybe there's some way to putt better," Bradley said. "I see myself finding a way to putt."
Bradley and Simpson are in a difficult spot, for neither wants to look like a group of dissenters. Both said they have respect for the USGA and R&A, and Bradley wanted to make that clear Wednesday at Sherwood Country Club when he said, "I do understand the USGA is trying to protect the game. I knew they're not doing something maliciously to hurt me or other guys."
But this already is shaping up to be a divisive issue, from industry leaders worried about the growth of golf to players who have been using these putters for years.
Carl Pettersson of Sweden and Tim Clark of South Africa have used broom-handle putters all their careers, and they have talked about a possible legal recourse. Neither could be reached for comment. Pettersson was in South Africa for the Nedbank Challenge and did not return a phone call.
"Any competitive player likes to have an extra advantage," Matt Kuchar said. "I think you're going find anyone using the short putter is glad, and anyone using the belly putter or long putter is not happy."
Kuchar used a mid-length putter that rested against his left arm when he won The Players Championship. That style is OK.
Couples wasn't sure golf needed such a rule. His argument is that if the anchored stroke was that much of an advantage, everyone would be using it. He somehow managed to work Rick Barry of the Golden State Warriors into the conversation.
He referred to him as one of the greatest free-throw shooters in NBA history, famous for his underhand shot at the foul line.
"Do you see other guys copying him?" Couples said. "Is Keegan Bradley the best putter on tour? Is Webb? So it's a look. They can say all they want, but it's a look. An advantage? You think guys out here are dumb? What's an advantage? You would think if this was such an advantage, everyone would be using it."
None of the top 20 players on the PGA Tour's most reliable putting statistic used an anchored putting stroke.
"In my opinion, they haven't screwed up golf yet, and I don't think this will screw it up," Couples said. "But I feel bad for Keegan Bradley, because I'll tell you what: If they banned it tomorrow and we played a tournament, I think I'll be a better player than Keegan. And I don't think that's fair."
In the meantime, the World Challenge gets under way Thursday as the final event of the year for Woods, and the last chance for this 18-man field to earn ranking points. Some will go to the Shark Shootout next week in Florida. The others won't be seen again until next year, either in Hawaii or the desert.
The anchored putting stroke will come again. The debate most likely won't end anytime soon.

The rate of babies born in the United States hit a record low in 2011, a new analysis shows. Researchers say the drastic drop in the birth rate among immigrants has greatly contributed to the overall decrease.
Based on preliminary data from the National Center for Health Statistics, the Pew Research Center calculated that the overall birth rate ? the annual number of births per 1,000 women between 15 to 44 ? was 63.2 last year. That's the lowest since such reliable record collection began in 1920 and close to half the birth rate in 1957, amid the Baby Boom years.
The overall number of births declined 7 percent from 2007 to 2010. During this period, U.S.-born women saw a 5 percent birth-rate decline, while there was a 13 percent drop in births to immigrants. The drop was even more dramatic for Mexican immigrant women, at 23 percent.
Despite the recent dip, foreign-born mothers still give birth to a disproportionate share of the nation's newborns, a trend that has persisted over the past two decades. The birth rate for immigrant women in 2010 was 87.8 per 1,000 births, compared with 58.9 per 1,000 births for American-born women. And although only 13 percent of the U.S. population was foreign-born in 2010, immigrant births accounted for 23 percent of all newborns that year, according to the Pew Research Center.
The report also found that the share of births to unmarried mothers and teen mothers was higher for U.S.-born women (42 percent and 11 percent, respectively in 2010) than to foreign-born women (36 percent and 5 percent, respectively). Meanwhile, a higher share of immigrant women gave birth at age 35 and older (21 percent) than did U.S.-born women in that age set (13 percent).
Overall U.S. teen birth rates have declined about 37 percent in the past two decades, according a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released in April 2011. That study found contraceptive use is lowest, while teen childbirth is highest, among Hispanics and non-Hispanic blacks. Lower contraceptive use may also explain why teens in states with more residents with conservative religious beliefs are also more likely than other teens to give birth. That study, detailed in the journal Reproductive Health in 2009, found that Mississippi topped the list of conservative religious beliefs and teen birth rates.
Researchers with Pew say the cause of the immigrant birth-rate decline, found in the new study, is likely due to changes in behavior, since the composition of immigrants in the U.S. population has not changed during that time period. A previous report from Pew tied the recent overall birth-rate decline to the recession. Latinos ? who make up a large portion of the immigrant population ? have been hit particularly hard by the economic downturn, with increasing poverty and unemployment rates.
Pew researchers said their projections show that by 2050, immigrants arriving since 2005 and their descendants will account for 82 percent of U.S. population growth.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The American Civil Liberties Union and four servicewomen sued the U.S. Defense Department on Tuesday to end a ban on women in combat, calling the military the last bastion of discrimination by the federal government and saying modern warfare has already put women in the line of fire.
The civil rights group argued in a legal complaint filed in federal court in Northern California that the military policy barring women from roles primarily focused on combat solely because of their gender was unconstitutional.
Hundreds of thousands of women veterans returning from wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are finding career paths off limits, sparking the challenge to a policy that has been in place officially since 1994 and unofficially for around two centuries.
"Nearly a century after women first earned the right of suffrage, the combat exclusion policy still denies women a core component of full citizenship - serving on equal footing in the military defense of our nation," the suit reads.
Military officials say their institution is changing, but that is not fast enough for the returning veterans. The lawsuit, the second this year in federal court, comes a year after the Department of Defense ended restrictions on gays serving openly in the military.
The women challenging the Department of Defense policy flew search-and-rescue helicopter missions and patrolled with male Marines in nominally non-combat counter terrorism job roles. Two of the four were wounded. But they found their work unrecognized when it came to promotions.
"In America today it's hard to conceive that there are still things you are not allowed to do, just because you are a woman," Captain Zoe Bedell, a Marine Corps reserves officer who served two tours in Afghanistan, told a news conference.
Her female marines, tasked with engaging with residents in support of male infantry units, found themselves fighting, too.
"They patrolled every day with the infantry, and sometimes twice a day. They lived every day on the same combat outposts in remote corners of Afghanistan. They wore the same gear and they carried the same rifles, and when the unit was attacked, my marines fought back," she said.
SLOWLY CHANGING
The lawsuit comes as the Department of Defense has slowly been dropping such gender-based restrictions. Under the 1994 policy, women are allowed to serve in combat units as medics, intelligence officers and other jobs at the brigade level.
In February, women were allowed to perform the same job in a battalion, which can be as small as a few hundred troops. The Pentagon dropped restrictions on women serving in units that were required to be based with combat units.
But women are still not allowed in infantry, or in smaller units engaged in combat. Women are barred from more the 238,000 positions, the ACLU said. Nevertheless, in Iraq and Afghanistan, where there are no clear battle lines, women have been pulled into combat in spite of the policy, the group added.
Asked about the lawsuit at a briefing, a Pentagon spokesman said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta remained "very committed to examining the expansion of roles for women in the U.S. military and he's done so."
"On his watch, some 14,500, give or take a few, positions have been made available to women. And he has directed the services to explore the possibility of opening additional roles for women in the military," spokesman George Little said.
"So I think his record is very strong on this issue. The recent openings that I just referred to are merely the beginning and not the end of a process," he added.
Some defense officials have noted that 10 years of combat had made it clear some gender restrictions were obsolete because battlefields faced by U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan had no clear front lines and no way to eliminate exposure to fighting.
OPENS UP OPPORTUNITIES
The military has sometimes gotten around the rules by temporarily attaching women to battalions, which allowed them to work in the smaller units but kept them from officially receiving credit for being in combat.
Still, commanders are hampered from using the best people for a given job, and the military as a whole is losing dedicated soldiers, the suit says.
Since combat experience is a factor in promotions and job advancement in the military, women have had greater difficulty than men in moving up to the top ranks, officials said.
Search and rescue pilot Major Mary Jennings Hegar of the California Air National Guard was shot down with her chopper in Afghanistan. "I was actually the only person in my group to return fire," said Hegar, who was wounded but left active duty because of the lack of combat jobs.
The Air Force is the service most open to women, with no gender restrictions on 99 percent of jobs. The Marine Corps and U.S. Army are more difficult, barring women from more than 30 percent of jobs for enlisted personnel, mainly combat and armor positions, the Defense Department has said.
The ACLU and law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson filed the request for an injunction on the policy in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California. The lawsuit follows a similar suit filed in May by two Army reservists in federal court in Washington, D.C.
The new case is Hegar vs Panetta, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, No. 12-6005.

SANTA ANA ? Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has been diagnosed with cancer and, despite what she described as an aggressive treatment plan, said she will stay at the helm of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
"I will be fully engaged," Hutchens said during a news conference Monday, accompanied by members of her command staff. "And I plan to run for a second term in 2014."
Hutchens voice cracked as she described details of her recent diagnosis of breast cancer, but said she is intent in being involved in the day-to-day operations of the department.
"I think the best thing for this is to keep your normal schedule as much as possible and keep engaged," she said.
A resident of Dana Point, Hutchens, 57, said she was diagnosed with breast cancer Nov. 9, about six months after a mammogram had shown no signs of a cyst. The discovery came as a surprise, she said, especially because there is no history of cancer in her family.
"I'm very optimistic about it," she said. "I really believe it was caught early."
Hutchens notified employees in the department in a memo Nov. 19, in anticipation that treatment could change her appearance, her schedule and raise questions about her health, she said.
But there will be no change to the department's command.
"I'm going to be in charge," she said. "If at any time I felt I could not carry on my duties, I would make other arrangements. That's not going to be the case."
Hutchens was appointed to the department's top post in 2008. Immediately after her appointment, she faced stiff political opposition.
A retired division chief from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, Hutchens was both criticized and praised as an Orange County outsider.
There have been signs Hutchens plans to remain active in some of the department's most pertinent issues.
On Nov. 20, she attended a meeting in Lake Forest, where the City Council approved an agreement that allows the Sheriff's Department to expand the James A. Musick jail, allotting space for an additional 1,850 inmates there.
Four days earlier, she underwent her first chemotherapy treatment.
"So far, I'm powering through," she said.
During her tenure, Hutchens has taken on several reforms in the department, including major changes in the county's jails, where some deputies were found to be deferring to jail "shot callers" to dish out discipline and order.
In 2010, Hutchens won the election to the position, beating out Anaheim police Deputy Chief Craig Hunter and former Sheriff's Department Lt. Bill Hunt.
Earlier this year, Hutchens and the department also won a court fight against the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs, after a judge backed up her decision to no longer allow deputies to review internal affair files before being interrogated in internal investigations.
The Sheriff Department is still going through major changes, including the state's prison-realignment plan, which has shifted the responsibility of housing and supervising former prison inmates in county jails, straining budgets and space in local jails.
The department also won a five-year contract to police Yorba Linda.
Deputy union President Tom Dominguez said deputies and the department supported Hutchens decision to remain at the helm of the agency.
"She's not a quitter and extremely smart. She's strong and a quality person," Dominguez said. "The department is behind her and supportive of her."
Many of the responsibilities will likely fall on Undersheriff John Scott, the de facto No. 2 in the department, but several top officials in the department said they expect little change, though there have been some changes to the department's top positions.
Assistant Sheriff Mike James, who headed custody and court operations, retired in September and was replaced by now-Assistant Sheriff Lee Trujillo.
Assistant Sheriff Tim Board, who heads professional services command, is also expected to retire this year.
Dominguez expressed confidence in Scott and said he expects any changes to Hutchens' schedule and the responsibilities to department heads to be "negligible."
"We're praying for her, and hoping she gets through this," he said.
Hutchens said her doctors plan a treatment that involves chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
Administrators know what is expected of them, said Cmdr. Linda Solorza, of the department's field operations division.
"She's taught us all, and we know what her expectations are," she said.
Hutchens has also been active outside her role as sheriff.
In March, she was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to the Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training, which establishes training requirements for law enforcement agencies statewide.
Day-to-day operations are not expected to be affected, though Hutchens will probably attend fewer speaking events, she said.
Officials described Hutchens as a hands-on sheriff and said it may be an adjustment for her not to be present at some events but that she will continue to play a role in the decision process.
"The fundamentals remain the same," Trujillo said.
During the news conference, Hutchens said she has a hard time turning over decisions to other people, but she's learned to do that ? with her doctors.
"I have all the confidence in this department," she said. "At the end of the six- to eight-month program, I will be back to my usual self."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top prize in the Powerball lottery will reach a record $425 million after no one won Saturday's drawing, a lottery official said on Sunday.
Iowa Lottery spokeswoman Mary Neubauer said the jackpot was $325 million for the drawing late on Saturday. Powerball has not had a winner for two months.
The $425 million record jackpot could be raised before Wednesday's drawing since big payouts tend to spur sales, Neubauer said.
"We'll watch sales to see if an adjustment upwards needs to be made," she said. The cash payout will be a record $278.3 million.
The previous top Powerball prize was $365 million, won in 2006 by ConAgra slaughterhouse workers in Nebraska. The Powerball lottery is held in 42 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
In March, three winning tickets shared the largest U.S. lottery jackpot, the $656 million Mega Millions drawing
The winning Powerball numbers for Saturday were 22-32-37-44-50, and the Powerball was 34.

I?ve been dating my boyfriend for 6 months, during the first month we talked about marriage. I have been married before at 19 for only 3 months and I thought I was over it and didnt care. Now that I?m seeing my boyfriend and the thought of marriage came up I developed a generalized anxiety disorder and have been dealing with it. He is so good to me and sticks by my side no matter what but lately I?ve been having doubts if he is the one for me, or if I?m ready for marriage and basically just panicked.
I cant seem to just go with the flow of the relationship, it?s like I need an answer now. Also we are long distance and have yet to spend more than 4 days at a time together. I feel maybe if we got engaged the doubts would go away but if they didn?t this would only cause him more hurt. Im completely honest with him and only want the best for both of us, I just don?t want to regret leaving someone I love just because of doubts. I can?t think of a better guy, I could be more attracted to him but looks aren?t important to me but I also want to be able to love him back the way he deserves and not feel this pressure to move on to marriage or either move on to someone else, I just want to see where it goes but my head it constantly telling me I need to leave him or that I love him and he is amazing and great and that he is the one for me.
A: Listen to your instincts. They are good. Talking about marriage in the first month of dating and pursuing the issue when you?ve never had more than 4 days together makes no sense at all. Of course you?re anxious. What?s the rush? I don?t think the problem is that you?re ?gun shy? from a short marriage 7 years ago. I think your system is trying to slow you down.
I?m also concerned that you aren?t more attracted to him. Yes, he may be wonderful. But attraction does matter. It shouldn?t be the only factor in your decision but it certainly should be considered.
I think you should take a big step back. Put the marriage question on hold until you?ve had some quality and quantity time together. Give yourself time to get to know how you two click when you aren?t in ?visit? mode. You need some time to get into daily routines and see how it works. If your boyfriend pressures you to move faster, there?s something amiss. A decision as important as who you?ll spend the rest of your life with deserves time and attention. If he truly loves you, he can slow down too.
There?s a sweetness to the time of courtship. It?s a time to explore each other on many, many levels. It?s a time to learn everything from what kind of toast a person prefers to how to please each other physically. It?s a time to enjoy being the full focus of someone else?s love and attention. It?s a time to meet each other?s family and friends to see if there?s a good fit. It?s a time to talk about the endless possibilities that go into making a life together, from your personal goals to your hopes and dreams for a life together. Don?t shortchange yourselves. Enjoy the romance.
I wish you well.
Dr. Marie

DEAR ABBY: My darling mother-in-law passed away recently. She was a wonderful woman, a caring and loving role model to her children and grandchildren. In her will she left a diamond ring to her daughter, "Mimi," a diamond ring to me, and the remainder of her jewelry to her grandchildren. Her house and its contents were to be divided equally between her son and daughter. My children received a box from Mimi filled with Mom's costume jewelry. All of her expensive jewelry was missing. When I asked about the missing items, Mimi said they were in the box, and she had taken photos to prove it. ...

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? The maker of the controversial pesticide methyl iodide, used primarily to fumigate strawberries, has agreed to remove all of its products from the U.S. market and end sales permanently.
The U.S. EPA announced Wednesday that Arysta had requested voluntarily cancellation of all of the company's product registrations, which means that the suspected carcinogen will no longer be used in this country by the end of the year.
The company's decision ends more than five years of legal battles by environmental groups and farmworkers who had fought initial approval of the product during the Bush administration. It comes after an announcement in March that the Japanese company would voluntarily pull methyl iodine from the U.S. market.
Arysta said at the time that the decision was based on the product's lack of economic viability.
"This is the final nail in the coffin," said Greg Loarie of the nonprofit environmental law firm Earthjustice, which represented a dozen groups in California, Oregon and Florida.
Studies have shown that the fumigant, also known as idomethane, poses acute public health risks because tests on rats and rabbits showed that exposure causes thyroid cancer, miscarriages and damage to the nervous system. Scientists also found it can pollute air and water.
Since it was approved in 2007 by the Environmental Protection Agency, methyl iodide had seen little use across the nation. California's $2 billion strawberry industry, which produces more than 90 percent of the nation's crop, has shunned it, in part because it carried severe restrictions on use near schools and residential areas.
Methyl iodide had been widely seen as a replacement for another fumigant, methyl bromide, which is being phased out under international treaty because it depletes the Earth's ozone. Some growers are currently using up their supplies of methyl bromide, while others have switched to fumigants such as chloropicrin and metam sodium as alternatives.
Methyl iodide is injected into soil, kills bugs, weeds and plant diseases. It was also used by some growers of tomatoes, peppers and other crops.
Since many foreign countries look to the U.S. EPA's pesticide registry to decide their own regulations, environmentalists hope the decision means its use will be curtailed worldwide. The EPA will take comments on the decision for 30 days.

LONDON (Reuters) - World share markets and commodities rose on Monday, recovering some of their sharp losses last week, on signs of progress in talks to resolve the fiscal crunch in the United States.
Gains in U.S. stock futures pointed to a firmer start on Wall Street as well, extending a rally that began on Friday.
The optimism was fuelled by comments from U.S. lawmakers who indicated that compromises are possible in negotiations to avert $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts due to start in January - the "fiscal cliff" that threatens to send the economy back into recession.
MSCI's world equity index <.miwd00000pus> jumped 0.7 percent to 398.50 points, recovering part of last week's 2.7 percent fall, its biggest five-day drop since early June.
"The thing about markets is if they can see there's light at the end of the tunnel, then they're going to discount that," said Mike Ingam, market analyst at BGC Partners. "At the moment...there is very little clarity as to what the end game actually is although, of course, everybody expects there to be a compromise."
There was also optimism in Europe over the prospects of a deal this week to release much-needed aid for Greece.
European officials are expected to discuss a two-year funding plan for Athens at a meeting on Tuesday, which would postpone any longer-term solution until after a September 2013 German general election.
European Central Bank policymaker Joerg Asmussen said at the weekend that the ministers were likely to agree the deal and leave resolution of a longer-term debt stabilization plan for Greece, at the heart of a disagreement with the IMF, until later.
The euro rose 0.25 percent to a high of $1.2775, well above the two-month low of $1.2661 hit last week and near the top end of its recent range, suggesting the foreign exchange market expects an agreement on Greece.
"This message from the ECB would tell me that, yes, what we are heading to this week is an agreement that would keep Greece out of trouble for the next year or so," said Gilles Moec, senior European economist at Deutsche Bank.
European share markets also enjoyed a strong rebound from the lows of last week, mainly on the growing optimism over the U.S. political negotiations.
The FTSE Eurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top European shares was up 1.3 percent at 1,076.03 points, led by sectors that depend on economic growth, such as auto stocks <.sxap>, basic resources <.sxpp> and banks <.sx7p>.
In the region's main centres London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, was up 1.3 percent, while Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> and Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> rose by over 1.6 percent. <.l><.eu/>
Safe haven bond markets reflected the stronger risk appetite with the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield edging up to around 1.61 percent, still only about 22 basis points above a record low set in late July.
The 10-year German government bond yield moved up to 1.35 percent but traders said there was room for yields to rise much further if euro zone policymakers reached an agreement at their meeting on Tuesday.
DOLLAR STRENGTH
In the currency markets the dollar briefly extended its gains against the yen on expectations a new Japanese government will push the central bank into taking aggressive monetary stimulus measures to boost growth after next month's elections.
The greenback rose to 81.59 yen, its highest level since April 25, before steadying to be around 81.28 yen.
The Bank of Japan began a two-day meeting on Monday, but is not expected to take any new policy steps before the December 16 vote.
The rising hopes of a deal on closing the U.S. budget gap, which had clouded the outlook for global growth, spread through the commodity markets lifting oil, copper and gold.
Copper rallied more than 1 percent to $7,696.25 a tonne on the London Metal Exchange, and gold was up 0.6 percent at $1,723.6 an ounce.
A drop in the dollar index <.dxy> which had eased from a two-month high hit on Friday, added to demand by making commodities priced in the greenback more affordable for buyers holding other currencies.
In oil markets, Brent crude rose to almost $110 a barrel as the escalating violence between Israel and the Palestinians fuelled concern about supplies from the Middle East.
Investors fear the conflict may draw in other countries and possibly disrupt energy exports from the region, which supplies more than a third of the world's crude.
Brent crude for January delivery was up 92 cents to $109.87 a barrel and U.S. crude futures gained $1.00 to $87.92 a barrel.

I have a great idea whom Barack Obama should nominate as his next CIA director: Gen. David Petraeus. With that simple announcement, Obama could strike a blow for civil liberties and against the silly and destructive sexual Puritanism that has taken down so many public figures. Since Petraeus? departure both Democrats and Republicans have been mourning the loss of a public servant of extraordinary ability.
So let?s mourn no more. The president can say that when news of Petraeus? affair first broke he reluctantly accepted the general?s resignation. But as it has become clear that the events were wholly of a private nature and national security was not breached, he is reinstating his CIA director. (OK, we probably have to wait until the CIA finishes its new investigation into whether Petraeus used agency resources to conduct the affair, but investigators have leaked that they don?t expect any criminal charges.)
Because Obama is a man with such a blemish-free private life, this could be a ?Nixon in China? moment. It would be impossible for a Bill Clinton, say, to strike such a blow for sexual sanity. But given that even that insatiable sex fiend is back in the arena and much revered (by some), surely that means we have grown up enough to realize that just because you?re in public life doesn?t mean every aspect of your marriage is fair game. Yes, it?s been titillating to read the farcical details of Petraeus? fling, and no one got more vicarious pleasure than I. But in the end the Petraeus so-called scandal is just the old story of a long-married man who strayed with a younger woman, a woman who unfortunately for all went a little nuts. I hope that for none of the participants it?s a marriage ender, but it certainly should not have been a career ender.
As my Slate colleague Emily Bazelon has pointed out, the real questions are not about whether Petraeus and Broadwell did it under a desk but why the FBI kept pursuing this investigation once it became clear no crime had been committed. Both Petraeus and Broadwell were interviewed by the FBI and copped to the affair. Petraeus, realizing the affair had been discovered, did not then tender his resignation. According to accounts, he didn?t think he should. He must have concluded?rightly we can now see?that the matter was and should remain private and had no bearing on his ability to discharge his duties at the CIA. (Although the secret Gmail drop he set up with Broadwell does show he?s not a master of spycraft.) It wasn?t until some days later, according to the Washington Post, that Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr. told him his behavior made him unfit for office.
But does it? Now that revelations about the Tampa twins and Broadwell?s mean-girl threats to her perceived romantic rival have been aired, mocked, and already forgotten, we?re left wondering why we got our pants in such a twist over Petraeus dropping his. It?s understandable that given the timing of this story?it broke just after the presidential election and was simultaneous with congressional investigations of the Benghazi debacle?it must have seemed prudent to not to let Petraeus become a new, possibly explosive, distraction. It probably was a good thing that Petraeus wasn?t fighting for his job while testifying about Benghazi.
But thanks to our ever-faster cycle of humiliation and rehabilitation, he has already been punished and paroled. It?s time to let Petraeus get back to work. It would probably even please Mrs. Petraeus to see less of him around the house right now.
Petraeus has already engaged the services of Robert Barnett, the Washington lawyer who gets former government officials seven-figure book deals. The word is that no book is planned, but surely Petraeus must want to tell his own version of his life. Let?s hope that Obama keeps Petraeus from embarking on this next chapter by asking him to return and finish the job he started.
