Job Title: Activities Director for the Newton Teen Center, PEP grant
Reports to: Project Director of the PEP grant
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This position assists with preparing, organizing and coordinating assigned recreation programs and is specifically responsible for the health and fitness based elements of the Newton Teen Center, located at the West Suburban YMCA, including drop-in fitness classes, fitness-based mentoring, and cooking/nutrition programs. Responsibilities also include direct-service and success lies heavily within outreach and teen relationships. The Teen Center Activities Director will work in partnership with the Newton Public Schools, West Suburban YMCA, John M Barry Boys and Girls Club, Dreamfar Marathon Team, and the Multiservice Eating Disorder Association.
This position will report to The Newton Partnership, a division of the Newton Public Schools, from start date through July 1, 2012, when it is expected the position will report directly to staff at the West Suburban Y.
QUALIFICATIONS:
-Experience (Required/Preferred)
-Experience working with multiple, diverse constituencies, including advisory boards.
-Demonstrable experience participating in and managing collaborations.
-Public speaking and outreach experience.
-Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
-Deep-seeded commitment to youth work principles.
-Ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with a wide variety of constituents, including teens, families, mentors, human service professionals, guidance counselors, teachers and school leaders.
-Knowledge and experience in athletics and fitness industries preferred
-Ability to synthesize data, knowledge, and experience in planning.
-Excellent problem solving skills
-Ability to handle a variety of projects and assignments at once, managing time well and asking for support when needed.
-Humor and grace, supporting the ability to work effectively with many kinds of people.
-Effective use of personal and written communication in recruiting, supporting and training volunteers.
-Excellent Customer Service skills
Degree (Required/Preferred)
Bachelor?s degree in youth recreation, physical education, nutrition, or related and/or a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1.Work with the program directors and youth advisory councils to devise appealing programming for target audience including, but not limited to, fitness classes, basketball clinics, break dancing performances, and cooking groups.
2.Work with school staff at the middle and high school level, community and agency representatives to receive referrals for and attract youth to participate.
3.Assist volunteer coordinator and program director in the recruiting, hiring, training and support of qualified volunteers.
4. Assist in managing and reporting relevant portions of the program?s budget to federal grant standards.
5.Assist in gathering reportable data and preparing reports as described in grant guidelines.
6.Participate in planning discussions, advocacy initiatives and citywide initiatives as necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
-Office, community, and school settings.
-Set-up of community events may require arranging chairs, tables, podiums, refreshments, etc.
