Sundance 2013: Gravitas Ventures acquires three films from Slamdance

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Gravitas Ventures has acquired two documentaries and a comedy from Slamdance, the distributor announced on Monday.

Steven Feinartz's documentary "The Bitter Buddha," Michael Urie's comedy "He's Way More Famous Than You" and Peter Baxter's documentary "Wild in the Streets" will be released on video on demand in the next three months in more than 100 million homes in North America.

"The Bitter Buddha," which profiles alt-comic Eddie Pepitone's quirky lifestyle and imprint on the comedy world, will debut in select theaters February 15 and go to VOD four days later.

Baxter's "Wild in the Streets," which documents a centuries-old sports rivalry between two villages in England on opposite banks of the river Henmore, is set to be released on VOD on April 23. No date was announced for a theatrical release.

And "He's Way More Famous Than You," which premiered at Slamdance, will be released on VOD April 8, followed by a theatrical run on May 10. It follows Halley Feiffer, whom Gravitas described as a "once-up-and-coming indie film starlet," as she strives for Hollywood fame.

"We are thrilled to be working with such an array of talent coming out of Slamdance," Melanie Miller, vice president of acquisitions at Gravitas, said in a statement. "Nobody channels the cultural zeitgeist quite like Eddie Pepitone, no one with a competitive edge would want to be left out of hundreds of years of bloody town tradition in 'Wild In The Streets.' And, who doesn't want to work and co-star in a movie with Halley Feiffer?"

Ahead of the bell: Google's 4Q to give ad insights

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google's fourth-quarter earnings report should provide a barometer on how much more advertising shifted to the Internet during the holiday shopping season.

The results, due out after the stock market closes Tuesday, will also give investors a better sense on how the growing popularity of smartphones and tablet computers is affecting the prices in the digital advertising market.

Advertisers so far haven't been willing to pay as much to market their wares on mobile devices as they are on laptop and desktop computers because of the disparity in screen sizes. That factor has been cited as the main reason why Google's average ad prices have fallen from the previous year for four consecutive years, a streak that analysts believe will be extended when the company breaks down its results for the final three months of last year.

Despite the downturn in ad prices, Google's earnings have still been rising because the total number of clicks on the ads has been steadily climbing. Most of Google's advertising deals call for the company to get paid by the click.

Comparisons to Google's fourth-quarter performance in the previous year will be muddied by the company's $12.4 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility Holdings, which was completed eight months ago. Motorola has been losing money, so it will likely lower Google's fourth-quarter earnings compared to 2011 while boosting the total revenue substantially higher.

To complicate matters further, Google last month agreed to sell a Motorola division that makes cable-TV set-top boxes for $2.35 billion. Although the deal won't be completed until later this year, Google says accounting rules require the company to classify the set-top box division as a discontinued operation that doesn't count in the fourth-quarter results.

Google Inc. suspects most analysts who follow the company still included the set-top box division when they were drawing up their fourth-quarter projections. If that's true, the analyst forecasts that steer investor expectations could be envisioning substantially more revenue than Google will report.

In the third quarter of last year, the set-top box division generated an operating profit of $25 million on revenue of $797 million

Analysts, on average, foresee Google earning $10.57 per share on revenue of nearly $12.4 billion, according to a survey by FactSet. The earnings projections subtracts Google's expenses for employee stock compensation and the revenue forecast reflects how much the company has left after paying commissions to its advertising partners.

Google?s Larry Page Talks Improving Nexus Hardware Supply, Motorola?s Opportunities For Device Innovation

nexus4-8Google's conference call regarding its quarterly earnings mostly rehashed themes we've heard before ? cross-platform remains a priority. But Google CEO Larry Page had a few words to share about hardware in his own kick-off spiel. Page reiterated what we've heard recently about hardware supply levels from the Google Play store, and dropped (it's a pun, you'll see why later) a hint around what Motorola is doing at Google in terms of hardware.

Snacking on a Diet - Pretzels as an Alternative to Chips

Can't have snacks when you are dieting? Actually there are several low calorie snacks to help with those cravings and keep you focused on your diet goals.

Make your own Trail Mix

A home made mixture of nuts, chocolate and raisins has the sweetness and fat taste to help keep your stomach satisfied. This will help with your cravings and keep you on your diet goals. Do need to make sure portions are small.

Cheese Puffs:

Snacks filled with air will make you fill full and take in fewer calories. You will able to snack for a longer period of time during the day instead of just one snack at that's it for the rest of the day.

A Little Peanut Butter with Those Crackers:

Have those cravings for a good old fashioned cookie? Now one cookie probably will not kill your diet, it is just very hard to stop just at one. Try a graham cracker sandwich. Take two graham crackers and spread light peanut butter between the crackers. With This snack you will get protein and fat to help keep you full until dinner time.

Homemade Egg Salad:

The combo of protein and fat in egg salad will give staying power through out the whole day. All you need to due is chop up one hard boiled egg and add a tablespoon of reduced fat mayonnaise. The protein will keep you fuel and the fat will help slow your digestive system.

Got to love those Bananas:

Bananas do have more sugar than other vegetables and fruits, but is better than eating those snacks with full of processed sugars. Another benefit is you are working out a lot this will help you keep your potassium levels in check while helping your heart.

Go with the Goodness of Cheerios:

I always gave my children dry cheerios for snacks. This snack is also good for adults. If you can't stand dry cereal just add some skim milk. This snack will help keep you full and help you with your appetite with that crunching sensation. Cheerios are also very healthy carbohydrates.

Plain Yogurt

If you don't like drinking milk, yogurt is great alternative. Adding one serving a day will help your digestive system working correctly. It also contains protein which again will help you keep full and energized through out the day.

Adding these snacks to your diet when you have those cravings well help you stay on course with your diet.

Review: OEMP Exec Management Program for Entrepreneurs | The ...

2012 OEMP participants on the last day of the courseThanks to Sanderyn Amsberg for this review of the?OEMP Program. If you've been to an event our community should know about, let us know!

Big businesses have plenty of programs to upgrade and update their managers' knowledge, but small business owners and entrepreneurs usually have to shop around to acquire new skills and professionalism. Up until now!

The leading business school IE, based in Madrid and on a tie with top schools such as Harvard, LBS and INSEAD started a program for business owners and entrepreneurs this year. I attended the Executive Management Training and tested the waters.?

Of course there is a big advantage to doing a business course in Madrid: there are tapas, lovely people and plenty of sun. And, they were there, in abundance. But, there was really very little time for sunshine: the program runs from early morning to late in the evening at an intensity that gets you to shift to the highest gear.

It is packed with highly advanced courses offered by top professors from around the world. In small groups you work on complicated business cases, the newest marketing successes are analyzed and of course there is plenty of attention for new technology, in marketing and in operations.?

Unique in this program is the focus on entrepreneurialism. We were trained in understanding interactions with partners, clients, employees, in decision-making and in negotiating.

Situational leadership course and more

Running a business can be a lonely place where you notice lots of areas that qualify for improvement and finding the right training courses isn't always easy. Thus it was great to find top quality professors coaching on a variety of things. For me the situational leadership course was great. As an entrepreneur you deal with different people very frequently and it is not always easy to assess them quickly.Marta Williams had us practice with different types of personalities in a class and in a quiz. It was a great way to learn to see beyond was is being said and learn how to approach different people.

On a similar note there were a variety of leadership courses where you design and sell a product to a client, negotiate a good deal, learn where your strengths are using the strengths finder or how to market yourself via social media.?

It was not only leadership development on offer, but also courses that are normally available on an executive MBA, such as marketing, organizational development and business management.

Participants running larger businesses were profiting more from organizational development sessions or classes that taught you how to break from the pack. When you are running a successful business you don?t always have time to think about succession planning, or you might not think about new areas of entrepreneurship.

Finance, Supply Chain and Business Process

The OEMP program is designed for people in businesses with a revenue of 2 million or over. This is where business usually shifts from becoming small to becoming mature and organized - and this is where a top quality business school can help to attain extra quality in work processes.

Hence the very challenging Corporate Finance classes, which you will only need if you have a larger company and the very useful supply chain management classes that help you design the supply chain and business process so that you can maximize profits. For example: only once you are up and running can you choose to design your turnover cycle in such a way that your income is earned before your costs are paid for.

Very insightful knowledge for any entrepreneur, but crucial if you are running a business that is maturing. In short, most topics that are run in an executive MBA were on offer here, in a concise way.?

Networking, Ventures Lab, investment readiness sessions, business models

But, it was not only established businesses that were served here. A large part of the program is made to enhance entrepreneurialism and new ventures. There are plenty of networking events with successful entrepreneurs and amazing lunches with some leading investors. IE has a reputation for being a school where entrepreneurialism is given a priority.

The Venture Lab sessions and venture days, where investors come in and students pitch their ideas are an important and recurring part in the school?s curriculum. The ?investment readiness sessions? are also an important part of the OEMP program. Two afternoons and evenings per module are dedicated to understanding what a good business model is, how to pitch it and how a valuation works. In addition, there are investor-speakers who reflect on student?s work and there is plenty of opportunity to work out your own business plan in between modules.

An the end of the training, the pitch is for real and some of us indeed got funding to start or continue a business!?

A small group of entrepreneurs from all over the world

t is not only exposure to top quality professors, pitching for real investors, being in a highly professional environment that is so great about this program, it is working with a small group from all over the world and exchanging ideas and making plans. After a year of training, the group of eleven people I worked with became a very close knit, yet global group. When discussing your own business and passion and pitfalls in such an intense container with so few people, not much is left unshared.

From how to stay fit and young whilst running a business, to how to balance life and career, everybody is facing the same or similar challenges and the Spanish tapas culture helps to joke about it after a very busy day.?

The school is offering all the knowledge and access to key business people on a silver plate for participants: we had amazing lunches and afternoon drinks to dress the events and even the breaks. IE makes an outstanding effort to help anyone involved to join as many valuable activities within or outside the school: venture labs, lectures, networking events and even investor trips. To those entrepreneurs who want to broaden or even stretch their boundaries I can highly recommend the training.

IE's next Owners and Entrepreneurs Program (OEMP) is starting in February 2013. For more information contact Adam Stephenson, associate director of executive programs at IE Business School, stephen[dot]adamson[at]ie.edu.

Library prank sends Armstrong books to fiction section

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A prank note in an Australian library declaring that disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong's books would be moved to the fiction section has gone viral on the Internet, with one commentator declaring: "Hell hath no fury like a librarian".

"All Non-Fiction Lance Armstrong Books, including 'Lance Armstrong - Images of a Champion', 'The Lance Armstrong Performance Program and 'Lance Armstrong: World's Greatest Champion,' will soon be moved to the fiction section," read the sign posted at Sydney's Manly Library on Saturday.

A photograph of the sign posted on the Internet quickly sparked heated debate over whether Armstrong's fight against cancer and motivation of people outweighed his drug cheating in a sport rife with doping.

"As a cyclist the guy's work was inspiring, his foundation do amazing work and his story was great. ... You feel embarrassed for recommending his book to people, you stare at the books on the shelf questioning if the lessons and the inspiration is honest and real," said one commentator.

Manly Library said the printed notice, which was placed in a plastic stand on a bookshelf in the library, was a prank and that an internal review was underway.

"Libraries can't arbitrarily reclassify categories of books, because that depends on the ISBN number that is issued by the National Library," a spokesman at Manly Council, which runs the library, said on Monday.

Happy birthday, Buzz Aldrin! Apollo 11 moonwalker is 83

Famed space man Buzz Aldrin, the second person ever to walk on the moon, celebrated his 83rd birthday in cosmic style on Sunday.

Aldrin, who along with Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong boldly walked where no one had before in 1969, marked his birthday on the road with a trip to England.

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: "The Blob" from the sun has come and gone, sparking nothing more than beautiful views of the northern lights ? and there could be more blobs to come.

    4. 'Planetary parks' could protect space wilderness

"I'm heading home today if the UK weather allows," Aldrin wrote in a post on Twitter, where he writes as @TheRealBuzz, on Sunday.

This month, Aldrin helped launch the AXE Space Academy, a private spaceflight competition that aims to launch 22 people on suborbital spaceflights as part a deal with the space tourism company Space Expedition Curacao and XCOR Aerospace, which is building the Lynx space plane? to be used on the flights.

"Space travel for everyone is the next frontier in the human experience," Aldrin said during the project's launch this month.

But Buzz Aldrin is likely most well-known for his role on NASA's Apollo 11 mission, which made the first manned moon landing on July 20, 1969, when and Armstrong landed on the moon and performed the first moonwalk. Aldrin served as lunar module pilot for the Apollo 11 mission, with Armstrong commanded the mission. Astronaut Michael Collins, meanwhile, served as command module pilot and remained in orbit around the moon during the landing. Armstrong died at age 82 last year.

Aldrin is a retired colonel in the U.S. Air Force and flew combat missions in Korea before joining NASA's astronaut corps in 1963 as one of the space agency's third group of astronauts. He was born Edwin Aldrin ("Buzz" was originally a nickname) in Montclair, N.J., and earned a Ph.D. in astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

[ Photos of Buzz Aldrin at NASA ]

Aldrin's fist space mission, Gemini 12, launched on Nov. 11, 1966, sending him and astronaut James Lovell on a four-day mission to test spacewalk methods, among other goals. It was the final mission of NASA's Gemini program, allowing the space agency to proceed with the Apollo missions that ultimately sent Aldrin to the moon.

Aldrin, Armstrong and Collins launched their Apollo 11 mission on July 16, 1969. Aldrin and Armstrong spent two hours and 15 minutes walking on the lunar surface during their time on the moon. The Apollo 11 crew returned to Earth on July 24, 1969. Five more successful moon landing missions would follow.

Aldrin left NASA in 1971 and retired from the Air Force a year later. Altogether, he logged 289 hours and 53 minutes in space.

Since then, Aldrin has used his moonwalker fame to lobby for continued space exploration, specifically a return to the moon and missions to Mars. He has written several books, including two autobiographies, and made several notable television appearances, with stints on "Dancing with the Stars," "Top Chef," "The Colbert Report" and "Big Bang Theory."

Earlier this year, Aldrin settled his divorce from his wife Lois Driggs Cannon after 23 years of marriage, citing "irreconcilable differences."
