Poll: Is it time for the iPhone to go multi-colored?

Is it time for the iPhone to go multi-colored?

Apple usually keeps their flagship lines on a strict palette -- just metal for MacBooks lately, and metal and black or white for iPhones, iPads and iPod touches. The lower end lines get to have much more fun, with cool, chromatic options like silver, pewter, blue, green, yellow, pink, and red.

During the first few years of the iPhone there were always rumors a product Red version would ship around the holidays, but nothing ever came of them. To this day, if you want to add a splash of color to your iPhone, you have to go with a case or skin or sticker or after-market color swap.

Now, as the iPhone 5 approaches, is it time for Apple to revisit their color palette? Is it time to give iPhone owners the same options iPod nano and iPod shuffle owners have enjoyed for years? Is it time for the iPhone to get as multi-colored as the old Apple logo and original iMacs?

Or would that ruin the simplicity, class, and elegance of the iPhone line? Are even black and white one too many options?

Vote up top and then leave a comment below telling me why you voted the way you did, and which color you'd buy if you could!

Samsung Galaxy S III replaces check-in, keycard, TV remote and AC control in Olympic hotel

Kill Me

Samsung has turned the Galaxy S III into the ultimate hotel accessory in preparation for the Olympics. It's equipped 40 rooms in London's Stratford Holiday Inn to use the official smartphone of 2012 to check in and out, unlock doors and control the TV without moving. VIPs staying at the hotel for the games season will get first dibs on the technology -- just as long as Cody Brocious doesn't work out how to intercept it.

Sally Ride's sexual orientation : Multicultural Beat

Posted on | July 24, 2012 | Comments

?

The revelation that Sally Ride ?who died Monday ? was a lesbian and had a 27-year relationship with a woman came on the Sally Ride Science website and was confirmed later by a spokeswoman for Sally Ride Science.

Ride was the first woman to travel in space.

Some traditional media outlets, such as The New York Times, mentioned her partner, Tam O?Shaughnessy, in a list of survivors at the end of their stories. O?Shaughnessy is COO of Sally Ride Science.

That led to criticism from the openly gay Andrew Sullivan of The Daily Beast.

He accused the Times of homophobia for ?only perfunctorily? referring to the woman with whom Ride shared her life.

Ride?s ?sexual orientation was obviously central to her life,? Sullivan wrote, and the Times should have written more about her relationship with O?Shaughnessy. The Times would have done so for a heterosexual spouse, he said.

But others have pointed out that Ride kept her personal life to herself. Her battle with pancreatic cancer was not revealed until her death either.

In an interview with Broward Palm Beach New Times, Ride?s sister, Bear, said Sally Ride never tried to hide her relationship with O?Shaughnessy.

But Bear Ride, who is a lesbian herself, said not publicly speaking about the relationship was characteristic of Ride.

?Sally was a profoundly private person,? Bear Ride said. ?It was just part of who she was.?

Bear Ride told the website BuzzFeed.com that the posthumous coming out of Ride is a positive thing.

?The pancreatic cancer community is going to be absolutely thrilled that there?s now this advocate that they didn?t know about,? she said. ?And, I hope the GLBT community feels the same?.I hope it makes it easier for kids growing up gay that they know that another one of their heroes was like them.?

Sullivan and several other bloggers bemoaned how Ride, while alive, did not use her status as an icon to serve as a role model for young lesbians and as an example for everyone.

But others thanked Ride for coming out after death.

Andrew Rosenthal, the editorial page editor of The New York Times, said he hoped Ride?s death would spur discussion of how same-sex couples are not eligible for federal survivors? benefits.

The Defense of Marriage Act bars federal recognition of same-sex relationships and the granting of benefits to O?Shaughnessy.

A UCLA demographer said Ride could have been fired by NASA for being a lesbian (federal rules at the time she was an astronaut allowed discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation).

And older lesbians and gays ? Ride was 61 ? are much more likely to remain in the closet than younger gays, according to a survey by the Human Rights Campaign, one of the nation?s largest LGBT organizations.

Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, told BuzzFeed.com that many lesbian, gay and bisexual people struggle with whether or when to reveal their sexual orientation.

?For many Americans, coming out will be the hardest thing they ever do,? he said. ?While it?s a shame that Americans were not able to experience this aspect of Sally while alive, we should all be proud of the fact that like many LGBT Americans, she proudly served her country, had a committed and loving relationship, and lived a good life.?

?The fact that Sally Ride was a lesbian,? he said, ?will further help round out Americans? understanding of the contributions of LGBT Americans to our country. Our love and condolences go out to her partner.?

Dealing with Loneliness

OK, need more info so sorry for the questions to follow.

How old are the two of you.

How long did you date before marriage?

Do you have a job outside of the home?

Are there any children involved from previous relationships?

What was your relationship like before you married him? How much time did the two of you spend together before marriage vs how much time now? Give an estimate in how many hours a week then and now.

If you were sexually involved before marriage, how was it then compared to now.

How many hours a week did he work before you married vs now?

It would be wise to not tell him that you hate his job. I'm sure that you don't hate his job.. you hate that he has no time for you. Those are two very different things.

Library Monday: Project Based Homeschooling. - Bird and Little Bird

Homeschooling
Only very rarely do I poke my head out from kid lit land to share a book title with you that is especially for grown-ups.? And, I don't think I've ever done it with a book that I myself am still in the middle of.? I tend to be a cautious reviewer.? That being said, I am so inspired by Lori Pickert's book, Project-Based Homeschooling: Mentoring Self-Directed Learners that I really wanted to share it with you sooner rather than later. Like from the very moment that I picked it up and started to read.

Now, I'm not a homeschooler, I just sometimes play one on the internet.? As regular readers probably already know, my daughter goes to a tiny private school with an emphasis on integrating the outdoor environment into a fairly rigorous classical education.? No computers, lots of hiking.? But the fact that Mariam is in school has never prevented me from taking an active approach to her education at home.? We read, we do projects, Dan is even doing a homeschool Latin course with her.? And, depending on our situation come residency time, there is a strong possibility that I will find myself a more official homeschooler in the future.? In the meantime, I dabble.? As, I think, all parents do.? So, I do occasionally read up on homeschooling issues, techniques and ideas and honestly, I don't generally come across anything that rocks my socks.? It's not (no offense to anyone intended) the most innovative stuff overall.

Which is why I find Lori's book to be such a revelation.? It is simple in its approach, and many of the ideas are of the sort that are so sensible and reasonable you might well think that you should have thought of them on your own.? And perhaps you will have.? But for me, I honestly got a little teary-eyed reading this book because the clarity of Lori's presentation is such that I realized immediately some things that I think I really, really needed to have brought to my attention.? For example, I was only about twenty pages in when I suddenly felt my stomach drop at the realization that the reason that Mariam often resists my ideas about projects or writing prompts or things to investigate is obviously because they are my ideas.? Without even meaning to, I have been overdirecting our creative and educational activities around here for as long as I can remember and honestly, I'm both mortified and a little sad. Thank goodness that Alphabet Glue seems to be a notable exception; I guess that putting together activities that are broad enough to work for everyone left them open ended enough for Mariam to be able to engage with them more freely.?

But still, going forward I plan to take a very different approach to helping Mariam to identify the projects that she wants to tackle and to letting her undertake them.? I had to laugh as I read aloud to her the section of Lori's book about children becoming suspicious of adults investigating their current interests looking for areas of study or project ideas.? Lori mentioned that many children worry that adults will ask what they really want to learn about and then ruin their favorite subjects by making that learning an adult-driven (and probably mess-free) process.? Mariam nodded her head solemnly as I read that paragraph to her.? Oy.

As I said, I'm only part way through Lori's book.? But I am already more then willing to push it across the virtual coffee table at all of you.? Get a copy and read it.? The chapters that I've read so far have made me realize any number of important things, but perhaps the most salient among them is this: this isn't just a homeschooling book.? It is a guide to parenting.
