MSG summer shutdown a boon to NJ venues (AP)

NEW YORK ? Madison Square Garden, the world's most famous arena, is going dark for the summer ? and top acts like Sade, Britney Spears and Taylor Swift are having to perform on the outskirts of the Big Apple as the renowned venue prepares for a long-term makeover.

MSG will spend the next three summers reconstructing its arena. That's good news for New Jersey venues like the Prudential Center and IZOD Center, which are experiencing an increase in high-profile performers as a result. Even Long Island's Nassau Coliseum is getting a small boost.

"MSG is the busiest arena and has been the busiest arena that I've seen in the States ... and anytime you take out that supply, especially if you have an increase in demand, it's going benefit the Prudential Center, and certainly we expect that to be the case," said Jeff Vanderbeek, who owns the Prudential Center in Newark.

It's a busy summer for top musical acts: Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block are on the road together, the cast of "American Idol" and "Glee" are performing live and hitmakers like Katy Perry and Rihanna ? accompanied by Cee Lo Green ? have tours.

"This summer as far as I can tell, with or without MSG being shut down, it's going to be a busy summer with more acts wanting to play in arenas," Vanderbeek continued.

"2009 was a fairly light concert year," said Jim Minish, executive vice president of facilities at the IZOD Center. "There weren't that many bands out or bands couldn't sell arenas. There seems to be a lot more acts this year that are able to play arena venues."

Prudential is located about 10 miles outside of New York. Vanderbeek, who also owns hockey's New Jersey Devils, says he knew that the building would be busy this summer with the growing popularity of his venue, which is also housing this week's NBA draft, typically held at MSG.

IZOD, located in East Rutherford, N.J., is also getting a boost thanks to MSG's construction.

"We normally do a good number of concerts at IZOD Center, but I would say this year is probably a handful more that we've gotten from now through October," said Minish.

Both Vanderbeek and Minish say that commuting to New Jersey from New York is a breeze, though most ticketholders aren't initially convinced.

"People are shocked at how easy it is," Vanderbeek said.

MSG ? which has billed their reconstruction as the "Transformation" ? plans to upgrade its entrance, seating, lighting, sound and video; it will also add more bathrooms, suites, lockers, food options and "a new star dressing room."

A representative for MSG said the venue has been in touch with artists and promoters about its construction schedule; the venue will resume its concerts in October.

Gary Bongiovanni, the president and editor-in-chief of concert trade magazine Pollstar, said sports is a priority for MSG, and avoiding construction during the basketball and hockey seasons ? when ticketholders have purchased season passes ? is why construction is happening during the summer months.

Bongiovanni also said that MSG is a venue known to charge artists a hefty price to play there, and that performing in New Jersey could mean a larger profit for artists.

"It is known as a very expensive building to play ... which in general is true in most New York venues," he said.

MSG's concerts can house up to 20,000 people; IZOD matches that, while Prudential can hold up to 19,500 and for Nassau about 18,000 seats.

This year marks a unique time for some artists and MSG: Sade, who hasn't been on the road since 2001, is back after releasing a platinum-selling album last year. But fans won't get a chance to see the soul band play at one of the world's most famed arenas. The growing popularity of Fox TV show "Glee" has helped the cast land larger tour stops compared to its concert stint last year, and they have performed in other arenas, but can't do so in New York City.

"We would have performed at Madison Square Garden," said "Glee" actor Cory Monteith. "We sold out the Staples' Center twice in a day, which is about the same size and (MSG is) under construction, so I'm sure that's why we didn't go."

Venues like Prudential and IZOD are having some acts at their venues for the first time, and more importantly, the venues see it as an opportunity to get artists coming back. Vanderbeek says that's the case with Swift, who performed at Prudential twice last year and will perform there four times next month.

"She loved the building," Vanderbeek said. "So I think it's a testimony to New Jersey, to the building and certainly to Taylor Swift."

Lohan due in court for failing alcohol test (AFP)

LOS ANGELES (AFP) ? Troubled US starlet Lindsay Lohan is due back in court Thursday for breaching probation after failing an alcohol test while already on home detention, officials and reports said.

A court hearing will determine if Lohan, currently serving 35 days of home custody with an electronic ankle bracelet, breached the terms of her probation for a 2007 drunk driving incident, the LA District Attorney's office said.

DA office spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said she did not know the exact nature of the alleged violation, but the TMZ celebrity news website said it was because Lohan tested positive for alcohol in the past week.

TMZ said one of two tests on Lohan was conducted shortly after she hosted a rooftop barbecue, and the website cited sources as saying that LA County Probation Department officials will ask Thursday that she be sent to jail.

Lohan's publicist Steve Honig, when asked whether she had been summoned to court, replied: "I'm neither going to confirm nor deny."

The 24-year-old began her home detention on May 26 as part of a plea bargain over the alleged theft of a $2,500 necklace from a jewelry shop near her home in Venice Beach.

Lohan had already spent a few hours in jail in April, after a judge ruled that she had violated her probation for a 2007 drug and drunk driving offense, when she allegedly stole the necklace on January 22.

It is the latest in a long list of legal tangles for Lohan -- once the promising child star of hit Disney movies "The Parent Trap" and "Freaky Friday" -- who has a reputation for hard partying.

In July of last year Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail and another 90 days in rehab for violating her probation in a drunk driving case, but served just 13 days due to prison overcrowding.

She was jailed again in September, but was granted bail after only 15 hours behind bars and subsequently checked into rehab for drug addiction, a course she completed in January.

In 2007, she spent just 84 minutes in jail after police arrested her twice for cocaine possession while driving -- in one instance she crashed her Mercedes-Benz into a tree.

Monday's Musings: Real Time Versus Right Time And The Dawn Of ...

Different Flavors Of Real-Time Result In Significant Implications.

Many pundits, research insight folks, bloggers, and hand wavers keep talking about the need for real time in social business, analytics, mobile, and other disruptive technologies.? Given the volume of data, bandwidth constraints, and magnitude of business processes to be supported, is the notion of real time even possible?? It?s been the holy grail of many technology suppliers to state they are delivering information or reacting in ?real-time?.

While researching the issue, I rediscovered a classic post from event processing researcher Dr. Opher Etzion, from IBM Labs Haifa.? The central thesis from this 2007 classic post is that real-time is quite valuable in the context of ?the damage caused when missing a deadline?.? When you look at that from a business value perspective, his approach leads to four types of real-time (see Figure 1):

  1. Soft real-time: there is a sense to react after the deadline, but the utility decreases (maybe fast) and at some point gets to zero ? no use to do it at that point, but no damage.
  2. Firm real-time: The utility go immediately to zero when the deadline is missed ? no use to do it after the deadline, but no damage.
  3. Hard essential: Missing the deadline ? the utility function goes to a constant negative value; there is a constant penalty.
  4. Hard critical: Missing the deadline ? the utility function goes immediately to ?minus infinity?, means: a catastrophe will happen.

Figure 1. Four Types Of Real-Time And their Implications Of Missing A Deadline

?

The Shift From Real-Time To Right-Time Prioritizes Events By Business Value

A deeper examination of the four types shows that business value can easily be quantified in the hard essential and hard critical types as these result in penalties and disasters when real-time is not achieved.? In the case of firm real-time, the lack of timely response results in a wasted and non-valiant effort.

Consequently, organizations must prioritize business processes for real-time by business value achieved and potentially lost.? Essentially, this prioritization results in the notion of right time delivery of information. Moreover, right time increases in value as a concept when gauged against reactiveness versus proaactiveness.

As we break down business processes by interactions, an emerging class of applications move beyond transactions.? In fact, these applications must quickly determine right time actions at the point of engagement that follow 4 distinct types (see Figure 2):

  1. Proactive value added anticipation: the heart of engagement applications, anticipation allows for proactive response.? Examples include offers, suggestions, actions based on context drivers.? Context drivers could include location, presence, time, proximity, relationships, previous purchase behaviour, etc..
  2. Mission critical reactions: where most ?real-time? use cases tend to fit, this type addresses deadlines, commitments, and regulations.? Examples include response times, regulatory requirements, alerts, threshold triggers, and service level agreements.
  3. Nice things to do: reminders with minimal impact but provide proactive engagement.?? Examples include status updates, background information suggestions, and non-critical notifications.
  4. Timeless responses: where useless information resides in an abyss.? Examples include log reports, short action items, nice to know information from activity streams.

Figure 2: The Four Types Of Right Time Interactions

The Bottom Line: Right Time Information Will Enable The Emergence Of Engagement Apps

The maturation of transactional apps and the advancements in emerging technologies such as mobility, social networks, cloud computing, big data, advanced analytics, gamification, and unification now make way for the dawn of engagement apps.? Early concepts such as Enterprise 2.0, social business, and social CRM will make way for a new class of apps.? Stowe Boyd?s Work Media concept and some of the emerging analytical apps show promise in pushing forth this notion of engagement apps beyond social and into a multitude of design scenarios.

These people centric applications build on peer-to-peer (P2P) concepts such as relationships, interaction points, and context.? Engagement applications take advantage of technology trends to transform human and system interactions.? Engagement apps will require a different approach in construct.? Builders of engagements applications will require a design thinking approach to design the expected interactions and process flow to achieve a higher level of interaction and business value.? Stay tuned as this trend continues to emerge.

Your POV.

Ready for right time apps? Got a different point of view on where apps are headed?? Is real-time possible or is there just too much information for real-time?? South Korean military apologizes for firing at commercial jet

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Two soldiers fired 99 rounds after mistaking the plane for a North Korean military jet
  • Military official: Guards "need more education on how to distinguish civilian airplanes"
  • The South Korean military says the rounds fired were warning shots
  • The airline says two other flights flew on the same route within an hour

Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- The South Korean military apologized Monday for shooting at a commercial airplane carrying 119 passengers and crew.

The Asiana Airlines flight was preparing to land Friday morning at Incheon International Airport, 70 kilometers (43 miles) west of Seoul, when two soldiers fired at the aircraft after mistaking it for a North Korean military jet.

The soldiers were on Gyodong Island, near the North Korean border. After firing 99 rounds, they reported the incident.

The South Korean military claims the rounds were only warning shots from K-2 rifles, and there was no damage to the aircraft because it was out of range.

"I sincerely apologize for causing the public concern over the incident," Col. Lee Bung-Woo, spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Monday.

The aircraft, on its way from Chengdu, China, was "flying on its regular route under command of the flight control tower," Asiana Airlines spokesman Ki Won Suh said.

Asiana confirmed two other flights ran on the same route 20 minutes before and after the firing incident, raising questions about why only one flight concerned the soldiers. The passengers and pilots were unaware they had been fired upon until they landed.

"We understand the guards need more education on how to distinguish civilian airplanes," said Lee, the military spokesman. But the South Korean military said it will not reprimand the two soldiers because they acted in accordance with procedure.

The incident comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two Koreas. Pyongyang said it would cut off all ties with Seoul last month, accusing the South of waging psychological warfare by sending propaganda into North Korea undermining the regime.
