North Forty News | Bohemian awards $500,000 to local nonprofits

Irish Elementary School is among the recipients of Fall 2012 Pharos Fund grants from the Fort Collins-based Bohemian Foundation. A total of $509,800 is being awarded to 29 organizations providing community support in the areas of literacy and education, mentoring at-risk youth, suicide and sexual assault prevention, homelessness, post-fire environmental monitoring, and the arts.

Individual grants in this funding cycle range from $4,800 to $30,000. Irish will use its $18,000 for the Literacy Home Visit Project, which involves the whole family in learning to read.

Other youth- and family-oriented recipients include Larimer County Child Advocacy Center for the School-Based Prevention program, Touchstone Health Partners for the Grandfamilies Support Services program, and Teaching Tree Early Childhood Learning Center, which each received $10,000; Project Self-Sufficiency for the Cars for Families program, $25,000; and SAVA Center for the Youth Empowerment Series, $20,000.

Grants were also made in response to this summer?s wildfires and ongoing drought conditions, including $7,000 to the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department for post-fire monitoring, and $10,000 to the Colorado Water Institute for The Poudre Runs Through It program.
Bohemian Foundation is a private family foundation established in 2001 by Pat Stryker. Since its inception, Bohemian Foundation has awarded approximately $12 million in Pharos Fund grants to nonprofits serving the Fort Collins area.

Bohemian Foundation will begin accepting online applications for the next Pharos Fund round starting in January.

Lev Raphael: Does Being Famous Mean You Don't Have to Write Well?

When I was the crime fiction reviewer for the Detroit Free Press, I noticed something strange in the reviewing world. My colleagues would rave about a mystery or thriller, but ignore the fact that it was badly written. I suspect that's what's going to happen with Dick Wolf's debut thriller The Intercept.

In case you don't recognize the name, Wolf is the Emmy-winning producer and creator of Law and Order. I was a devoted viewer of that show through almost all of its twenty seasons, happily watching reruns because I loved the characters, the stories, the New York settings and the dialogue. So I assumed that any book written by Wolf and set in New York would have to be terrific. Unfortunately, his vast skills don't seem to have transferred well to fiction. While there are some exciting scenes in the book, it's weighed down by sometimes amateurish prose.

Here are just a few examples:

"He felt her fingertips chewing into the tops of his shoulders."

"Fisk snapped the ring of circular logic that was squeezing his mind like a tourniquet."

"He was a classically handsome Arab. Dark eyebrows across the top of an angular square face, broad shoulders."

"Fisk had a tight feeling in his gut. A psychic scent."

"Jennsen sat deeply at the end of a suede-covered couch."

"He backed up his thought process again."

These aren't exceptions; surprisingly inept prose appears throughout The Intercept and makes the book read like a first draft, or as if nobody bothered to edit it carefully, because, well, he's Dick Wolf. The dialogue is often wooden, too, and so are many of the characters' reflections, as when an anti-terror cop responds to a mysterious coded terrorist message by concluding, "Something was coming." That's actually the last line of a section and is meant to be a cliff-hanger.

If the book had been carefully edited, Wolf also wouldn't have been allowed to make his secret terrorist painfully obvious from almost the minute that character appears. Wolf points away from the terrorist so insistently that it can't be anyone else, which is almost as big a letdown as the writing.

Library Journal called the book "spectacular" and gave it a starred review. Kirkus, Publishers Weekly and Booklist have also published hosannas. But why should crime fiction or thrillers be held to a different standard than other fiction? Why doesn't the way these books are written matter to enough reviewers?

I kept reading The Intercept out of morbid curiosity, wondering if the book could really be so flawed. Unfortunately, it is.

The importance of prosecuting David Gregory if he - Legal Insurrection

I doubt David Gregory intended to violate D.C.?s ban on the possession or transfer of high capacity?ammunition magazines when he waved around such a magazine during his interview of Wayne LaPierre yesterday.

Prior to yesterday, I never would have thought that possession of an empty magazine, kept separate from ammunition or a weapon, would violate the law, so I sympathize with Gregory on that point.

But I?m less sympathetic than you might expect because fear of unintentionally violating gun laws is one of the things that has kept me from purchasing a handgun. As you know, I took the NRA safety course over a year ago. But I?m a legal resident of Rhode Island who lives much of the year in New York, so there?s an issue of whether I could obtain a NY permit, which is needed even to keep a gun in the home. And then there?s the issue of transportation back and forth, and complying with the requirements to avoid prosecution as I pass through Massachusetts.

It all became such a bureaucratic jungle that I just deferred for the time being.

That?s where we are with many gun laws, the law-abiding responsible citizens who worry about compliance are scared away or risk prosecution for unknowing violations, while the lunatics and criminals don?t care.

I still have not heard back from the three NBC News communications executives I e-mailed just after noon yesterday asking for the position of NBC News on whether the ammunition magazine was real and whether Gregory violated the law.

But assuming, as Gregory stated, that the magazine was for an AR-15, then why shouldn?t Gregory and the staffers to and from whom the magazine was transferred, be prosecuted?? Particularly in light of Gregory?s aggressive demand for more guns laws.

Certainly, if LaPierre had shown up with that magazine, there would be howls of gotcha, and widespread media demands for prosecution. Why should NBC News and its star be above the law?

There?s another lesson here.

Gregory?s possible violation of the law was exposed by the conservative blogosphere, which also pointed out that Gregory sends his kids to a school with armed security at the same time he was mocking the NRA suggestion of armed security in schools.

We have to do more of this, investigating the investigators and inquiring of the inquisitors. It?s one of the legal insurrections for 2013.
