This week in celebrity real estate, Mark Wahlberg's home is back on the market and the home of late NFL linebacker Junior Seau has been listed for sale.

He's great at starring in action films and Hollywood blockbusters, found success as an underwear model and was even a decent singer back in the day. But Mark Wahlberg has not done quite as well when it comes to selling his home in the Beverly Glen neighborhood.

Wahlberg first listed his enormous estate in 2008 for $15.9 million. In 2009, with news of his wife, model Rhea Durham, expecting baby No. 4, the property was delisted. In 2011, the home hit the MLS again, this time with a discounted price of $13.995 million.

Unfortunately, that discount wasn't enough, and Wahlberg slashed the price again ? this time down a million to $12.995 million.

Wahlberg's Mediterranean-style manse at?9694 Oak Pass Rd., Beverly Hills, Calif., 90210, is an ultra-private compound in a secure and gated community near Beverly Park. A "trophy property with unparalleled privacy," Wahlberg's 5-bed, 8.5-bath home sits on nearly 2 acres. A guest house on the property provides an additional two bedrooms and baths.

Measuring 11,500 square feet, the prime slice of celebrity real estate offers a chef's kitchen, screening room, as well as dining and living rooms "fit for entertaining."

Wondering how Wahlberg gets in shape for his movie roles? The property also has a two-story gym with a full-size boxing ring. The grounds feature a sports court (suited for basketball, tennis or racquetball), putting green, outdoor pool with waterfall, grotto and cabanas, and sweeping canyon views.

The day of Junior Seau's death, the property was surrounded by mourning fans.

Football fans were shocked and saddened in May when retired NFL linebacker Junior Seau was found dead in his Oceanside, Calif.,?home. It was later determined that the former San Diego Charger, Miami?Dolphin and New England Patriot had committed suicide at age 43.

Less than three months after his death, Seau's home is now listed for $2.295 million in the San Diego real estate market.

Seau purchased the home at 604 S The Strand, Oceanside, Calif., 92054 for $3.2 million in 2005. The 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath sits on a lot overlooking the ocean, which can be enjoyed from a massive outdoor balcony and the spacious great room.

Inside, the 2,238-square-foot home has hardwood floors throughout, a fireplace and antique stove in the kitchen.

HOW RACING REALLY STACKS UP ON DRUG TESTING

American horse racing is increasingly admonished in the mainstream media over legal and illicit drugs. The impression conveyed to the public during the recent Triple Crown season?was that the sport is permissive.

But how does horse racing really stack up against the foremost U. S. professional sports leagues on the twin elements of drug policy?testing and meting out of sanctions for transgressions?

Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association have adopted ?reasonable cause? testing policies, whereby a player can be checked at any time if someone in authority infers he may be using a forbidden drug. The National Football League?s collective bargaining agreement limits to four the number of times a player can be tested annually and permits game-day testing of performance-enhancing drugs but not recreational drugs. The National Hockey League states ?Every player will be subject to two ?no-notice? tests every year??

When benchmarked against the forgoing drug-testing practices, horse racing?s standards and procedures are very rigorous. The Association of Racing Commissioners International accurately states: ?Horse racing?s anti-doping program tests for more substances at deeper levels than any other professional sport??and the organization provides data to back up its claim. In addition, some game-day medications that are allowed in the professional sports leagues are verboten in horse racing.

While the American racing industry is a cut above other sports on drug testing, it is arguably worse when it comes to enforcing uniform and timely penalties for drug positives, especially for flagrant offenders. The punitive facet of drug policy is inhibited by multiple racing jurisdictions and often-protracted appeals processes that enable habitual offenders to continue to sully the sport?s image.

Professional sports leagues have quantified the consequences for drug-policy offences that are generally harsher than in horse racing. Measures have become more severe in recent years due to scandals over alleged and proven substance abuse by some superstars.

To illustrate, In MLB, a player?s fourth conviction for the use of a prohibited substance has a minimum two-year suspension and a third positive result for steroids carries a lifetime ban. However, such sentences typically have loopholes. For instance, the NHL allows a banned player to appeal a supposedly permanent exile once two years? time has passed.

Horse racing is held to a high standard on drugs for two entirely different and valid reasons: bettors are entitled to fairly decided outcomes and the welfare of equine athletes depends on the care provided by their handlers.

Drug-related news items that damage racing?s standing with the public and lessen its commercial appeal arise largely from the sport?s apparent leniency towards serial violators of regulations and the prolonged infighting over the race-day use of furosemide. Significant progress on these fronts would greatly diminish the notoriety that detractors seize upon to condemn the sport.

A moth with a foot-wide wingspan?!

The word "moth" may conjure up images of drab brown insects sticking to your screen door on a summer night. But there's much more to these mostly nocturnal fliers than meets the eye.

Not only are moths extraordinarily diverse in color, shape and size, said David Moskowitz, a New Jersey entomologist and organizer of the first annual National Moth Week (July 23-29), they also offer a huge array of ecological benefits, from pollinating plants to feeding birds, bats and even people around the globe.

OurAmazingPlanet has rounded up seven fascinating facts about these misunderstood insects:

1. There are more than 11,000 species of moths in the U.S. alone.
Moths outnumber butterflies, their nearest relative, by more than 10 to 1, said Matthew Shepherd, communications director and senior conservation associate at the Xerces Society, a nonprofit organization focused on insect conservation in Portland, Ore. There are upward of 11,000 moth species in the United States alone ? that's more than all the bird and mammal species in North America combined.

Moths can range in size from smaller than a pencil tip to bigger than a songbird. The Atlas Moth, of Southeast Asia, considered the largest in the world, has a wingspan of nearly a foot (30 centimeters) ? more than that of a Baltimore oriole. 2. Moths make great mimics.
Some moths are notorious for their ability to impersonate other animals. To avoid being eaten, some moths have evolved to look like less palatable insects, such as wasps, tarantulas and the praying mantis. Some moths even mimic bird droppings.

3. Moths are important pollinators.
While some moths, particularly caterpillars such as the corn earworm, are major agricultural pests, many others are important pollinators. "Their hairy bodies make moths great pollinators ? they pick up pollen from any flower they land on," Moskowitz said.

Moth-pollinated flowers tend to be fragrant and white, such as the yucca plant. Plants with these features allow nocturnal moths to easily find flowers after dark.

Some moths pollinate by day. Hummingbird moths hover in front of flowers and unfurl their long tongues to sip nectar; they feed on a variety of flowers, including bee balm, honeysuckle and verbena.

4. Many adult moths don't eat.
While some moths suck nectar, others don't eat at all. The adult Luna moth, for instance, doesn't even have a mouth. After it emerges from its cocoon, it lives for about a week. Its sole mission in life? To mate and lay eggs.

5. A male moth can smell a female more than 7 miles away.
Though they lack noses, moths are expert sniffers. They detect odor molecules using their antennae instead of through nostrils.? Male giant silkworm moths have elaborate, feather-shaped antennae with hairlike scent receptors that allow them to detect a single molecule of a female moth's sex hormone from 7 miles (11 kilometers) away.

6. They are important food for many animals.
Because of their abundance, moths are major players at the bottom of the food chain. "They're a huge source of food for bats," Shepherd told OurAmazingPlanet.

In fact, some moths have evolved defenses against their winged predators. Tiger moths produce ultrasonic clicking sounds that effectively jam bat sonar, inhibiting the bat's ability to find them.

"Caterpillars are one of the most important things that moths offer in the ecosystem," Shepherd said. "They are food for everything else."

An estimated 95 percent of nesting birds rear their young on insects, and caterpillars make up a significant part of that, Shepherd said.

7. Moths: The next superfood?
In some parts of the world, moths are a major food source for people too. More than 90 percent of people in some African countries eat moth and butterfly caterpillars, according to a 2004 survey by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Caterpillars are packed with protein and healthy fats, and research shows that 100 grams of these insects provides more than 100 percent of the daily requirement of some vital minerals, such as potassium, calcium, zinc and iron.

Defected Syrian general meets with Turkish foreign minister

Defected Syrian general Manaf Tlass met with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglo on Thursday after visiting Saudi Arabia, where he said he was working on a plan to end the Syrian conflict.

Turkey, once a close political ally of Syria, has denounced the violence meted out by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime and is sheltering some 44,000 Syrian refugees.

The Turkish foreign ministry said it would not release any information on Thursday's meeting, which came the same day as Arabic newspaper Asharq al-Awsat published an interview with Tlass, who said he was working on a plan to end the conflict, save Syria from sectarianism and rebuild the country without Assad playing a role.

The roadmap would involve "honourable" Syrians, including members of the present regime whose hands are "not stained with blood", Tlass said.

"I'm trying as much as I can to unite honourable Syrians inside and outside the country to create a roadmap that could end Syria's crisis," Tlass told the paper during his visit to Saudi Arabia.

"I will contact all honourable people willing to build Syria, whether they were from the (opposition) Syrian National Council, the (rebel) Free Syrian Army, and honourable people even if they were from within the regime," he said.

Tlass, whose July 6 defection was hailed in the West as a key setback for Assad, stressed that regime members whose "hands are not stained with blood must not be uprooted".

"We must preserve the state," he said, but added: "I do not see Syria with Bashar al-Assad" playing a role.

The general who was a childhood friend of Assad's said the president would have remained in power if "he had not taken this security path ... but security forces disrupted his views".

Tlass said he had no intention of leading Syria during a period of transition which, according to him, must be done by a team comprising Syrians from inside and outside the country.

A general in the elite Republican Guard charged with protecting the regime, Tlass is the son of former defence minister Mustafa Tlass, a close friend of Assad's late father and predecessor, Hafez al-Assad.

His defection was welcomed by the opposition umbrella group the Syrian National Council as an "enormous blow" to Assad.

But Tlass has faced criticism from Syrian rebels, who say he and his 80-year-old father, who lives in Paris, should have made their positions clear at the very start of the anti-Assad uprising in March last year.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says more than 19,000 people, mostly civilians, have died in violence unleashed by Assad's forces in its attempt to crush the uprising.

Apple Buys Samsung?s Android Security Partner AuthenTec For $356M

Amid fierce smartphone competition between Samsung and Apple that has spilled into a multinational patent battle, it looks like Apple may have opened yet another front on the M&A side: it is buying mobile security company AuthenTec -- which had only just signed a deal with Samsung for Android devices -- for $356 million. AuthenTec, among other things, makes fingerprint sensor chips that are used for security and identification purposes; these are embedded in computing devices.
