Pregnancy & Fitness: Finding Your Way (CFC Spotlight Thursdays ...

Does this face look familiar? Well if you?ve done any Insanity DVDs you should recognize Tania, the kick-butt powerhouse always killing it in the front row! Tania is not only a fabulous fitness professional, but she?s also a new mom!!?You already know what a HUGE Insanity fan I am,?so I was really excited when Tania agreed to chat with me about her experience staying fit before, during and after her pregnancy. Read on to hear about her experience and learn about how pregnancy and exercise can fit together!

1. Tell us about yourself!

I?m a proud new mommy who recently went from fishnets and stilettos to bibs and burp cloths! I?m a wife.?I?m a dancer.?I?m a fitness professional.?I?m a perfectionist to a fault.?I?m dedicated.?I?m a control freak who is learning to let go of the ?ideals of perfection? and be comfortable with imperfection.?I love my new life!

2. Where does your passion for fitness come from?
My passion for fitness stems from my desire to remain healthy and fit and not fall into the same health traps that those in my family have become victim of. I come from a Filipino family?where Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure are prevalent. It truly disheartens me to see the lack of responsibility and accountability for health by some of my family members. ?They have succumbed to medication and insulin rather than heeding preventative measures that could keep them healthy.

3. When you became pregnant with your son, what changes did you notice in your body? How did these changes impact your fitness regimen?

As soon as I learned I was pregnant, it was as if the pounds packed on right before my eyes! My body, unfortunately, gains weight rather quickly. Being pregnant changed my body immediately while most other women do not even appear to be pregnant until the second month.

Upon learning that I was pregnant (and jumping for joy!), I knew I had to change my workout routine. The high impact, high intensity training had to be put on hold. I suffered a miscarriage 3 months prior so I was extremely cautious with my pregnancy this time around.

4. I?m so sorry to hear about your miscarriage. After that experience did you exercise during your pregnancy? If so, for how long and what kinds of exercise did you engage in?

I did pre-natal yoga throughout my pregnancy. I also continued to teach dance for the first 7 months. The last two months consisted of long walks.

5. Given your experience/expertise, do you think women should exercise during their pregnancy? Also, what?s your take on women who diet while they?re pregnant?

I believe that moderate exercise is important not only for a woman?s physical being but for her mental health. Every woman must listen to her body and to the advice of her doctor prior to engaging in any sort of exercise while pregnant. Each woman and each pregnancy is different.

On dieting, the ?politically correct? part of me would like to say that maintaining a healthy diet and making healthy choices while pregnant are the best ways to go. The ?real? part of me realized that for the first time, I could eat whatever I wanted?and believe me, I did! I never over-indulged however I did not place limits on my diet.

Tania?s beautiful son, Benjamin!

6. How did your body change after giving birth to your son? Are there any new fitness challenges that you?ve faced since giving birth?

Oh boy (oh big boy!) did my body change. I gained 60 lbs., weighing in at 185 lbs. (gasp!) on the day I gave birth. My son measured large throughout my entire pregnancy so we were prepared for a big baby. I had to have a c-section due to Benjamin?s size and the health risks imposed with larger babies. My beautiful healthy boy was 9 lbs. 3 oz. at birth!

New fitness challenge?Nursing and working out! Nursing adds a whole new level of difficulty when trying to work out at a high level of intensity.

7. Caring for your baby boy and working out has got to be exhausting! How do you find time & stay motivated to workout and diet?

Honestly speaking, I did not find the time to work out for the first 6 months nor did I want to work out for the first 6 months of postpartum. I?m just now learning how to balance everything and some days are better than others.?Seeing the results of diet and exercise and feeling awesome are the things that keep me motivated to stick with this program.

8. What advice do you have for women who are pregnant and want to stay in shape?

First, consult with your physician before starting any fitness routine while pregnant!!! This is a must. I know I sound like your typical ?disclaimer? but after suffering a miscarriage, I would highly recommend that all pregnant women be cautious.

Yoga and walking were the best forms of exercise for me while pregnant. These were the only two things that felt good and safe.

9. What advice do you have for those women who have already had their baby and want to lose the ?baby weight??

It?s never too late to start getting healthy and fit!!! Often times women give up because they fall into the trap of feeling like ?I?ve had three kids, my body is what it is and it will never change.? The key is to find something you enjoy- whether it?s surfing, dancing, yoga, pilates, or tennis. The important thing to remember is that it?s a lifestyle change rather than going on a diet just to lose weight. If you choose an activity that you enjoy, the probability of sticking with the workout is so much greater.

BE PATIENT WITH YOURSELF! I keep reminding myself this every day. I am not accustomed to a ?post pregnancy? body and I must keep reminding myself that I just had a baby and my body is beautiful for producing such a miracle.

10. Is there anything else you?d like to add?

Most people think that it?s just ?easy? for me to get back in shape because I?m a dancer and fitness professional. Little do they know that I have to work just as hard as everyone else, if not harder?I?m almost 40 and I gained 60 lbs!

Uh I?d say the baby weight is gone, wouldn?t you? Go girl!

***Are you expecting and worried about the weight you?re gaining while pregnant? Are you a (new) mom and want to lose the baby weight? What myths have you heard about weight gain during pregnancy? Sound off! ?-CFC ***

  • Makena Beach and Golf Resort

As the highest-elevated course on Maui's south shore, the Makena Golf Course gives players stunning views of Mount Haleakala, the island's dormant volcano, and the Molokini and Lanai islands. Like the Wailea Golf Club's Emerald and Gold courses, the 18-hole Makena course is designed by famed golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. But the 6,914-yard Makena, with its narrow fairways, is considered the most challenging of the three. Read more about the Makena Beach and Golf Resort.

  • Casa De Campo

Casa De Campo's signature golf course, Teeth of the Dog, is arguably the best in the Caribbean. It, along with the two other courses on the property -- Dye Four and The Links, was designed by World Golf Hall of Famer Pete Dye. Each course has 40 groundskeepers assigned to it, which doesn't come as a surprise -- not a blade of grass is out of place. Read more about Casa De Campo.

  • The Lodge at Torrey Pines

The two golf courses at the Lodge at Torrey Pines are stops on the PGA Tour and offer misty, romantic ocean vistas. The South Course -- remodeled about a decade ago by Rees Jones -- boasts particularly breath-taking views of the Pacific, and challenges players with thick patches of trees, bunkers, and sand traps. Read more about The Lodge at Torrey Pines.

  • One and Only Ocean Club

The Tom Weiskopf-designed Ocean Club Golf Course fills up the eastern chunk of Paradise Island. The course has hosted numerous tournaments in the past, such as the Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational, and has one of the most happening club houses we've seen, with a nice bar area. Read more about the One and Only Ocean Club.

  • The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay

Both par-72s and both with fabulous views of the ocean along craggy cliffs, the golf courses at Half Moon Bay offer quite the challenge for golfers, with blustery ocean winds and tight fairways. Many stay at the Ritz simply for access to the courses, but the resort also boasts a luxurious 16,000 square-foot spa and cozy spots such as outdoor fire-pits and gardens. Read more about The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay.

The Mauna Kea Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and updated by Rees Jones, is consistently voted one of the top courses in the nation. Those who'd rather not play the full 18 holes can opt to visit the driving range or putting green instead -- or take a private lesson or group clinic with one of the pros. Read more about the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.

  • Los Suenos Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort

Syrians flee to "safer" Iraq through reopened border

OUTSIDE AL-QAIM, Iraq (Reuters) - At a bare concrete building on the western edge of Iraq, hundreds of Syrian refugee families wait in the shade, anxious to find out where they will spend the night after fleeing their homeland.

Many of the men, women and children had come from the Syrian town of Albu Kamal and said Syrian rebel forces escorted them on the 7 km (4 miles) road to the main border gate with Iraq.

Albu Kamal was captured by rebel forces last week in a push to seize Syria's international border crossings. Government forces have been trying to wrest back control, firing shells and rockets on the town, they said.

"When we woke up there was shelling. When we went to sleep there was shelling," 34-year-old Jamil Rafea al-Mahmoud said as he waited for Iraqi border control to process his papers.

"I am very upset at leaving my house, my neighborhood, my people, but what can I do? The Syrian people, we do not have anywhere to go but this safer place, Iraq," he said, without a hint of irony.

That Syrians are willing to cross the border despite bomb attacks across Iraq this week shows just how bad the situation back home has become.

Syrian refugees entered the desert border crossing near the western Iraqi town of Al-Qaim on pick-up trucks or on Iraqi government buses as part of a convoy.

They clambered down from vehicles into crowds of shouting soldiers and military trucks, and dragged their bags through the dust. Around 500 Syrians were already waiting at a camp for the refugees at the customs building, in an area surrounded by blast walls and coils of barbed wire.

Syria's 16-month-old uprising has been transformed from an insurgency in remote provinces into a battle for control of the two main cities, Aleppo and Damascus, where fighting broke out last week. President Bashar al-Assad's forces have counter-attacked.

About 50 Iraqi military trucks carrying troops, tanks and guns hurtled towards Al-Qaim on the road from eastern Iraq late on Tuesday to reinforce the border.

"We left Albu Kamal because Bashar's army slit throats and killed my relatives," 49-year-old Nassra Abdul Hallim said, seated with a group of veiled women and children.

"We drove behind the Free Army to the border and they opened the road for us," she said.

Next to her an older woman dressed in black held a limp, pale baby she said was exhausted from the journey.

ATTACKS EVERY DAY

Children slept on the floor or on top of piles of luggage as Red Cresent workers handed out watermelons and drinks in the 45C heat. Iraqi authorities were setting up tents nearby for Syrians that have no relatives to stay with.

"The situation is very, very dangerous in Deir al-Zor, there are attacks every single day," Hussam Mohammed, 34, said, surrounded by his family as children screamed and ran through the crowds of adults.

Syrians in his city, around 140 km (100 miles) from the Iraqi border, fear government forces more than the Free Syrian Army (FSA), he said. Across the border the rebels had painted a large mural of the FSA flag on a building.

"The war is between the two sides. They are shooting at each other and the people are just the victims," Mohammed said.

Fearing a spillover of violence, the Iraqi army sealed the Qaim crossing with concrete blast walls on Friday, trapping Syrians trying to escape attacks on the other side, according to local officials. Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki overturned the decision on Monday.

Iraq, whose desert province of Anbar, a Sunni heartland, borders Syria, is nervous about the impact of the conflict in its neighbor where mainly Sunni rebels are fighting to end Assad's Alawite-dominated rule.

Assad describes his foes as foreign-backed terrorists who are responsible for the killings.

The Iraq's Shi'ite-led government said on Monday it rejected Arab League calls for Assad to quit, saying it was for the Syrian people alone to decide his fate and others should not interfere.

A 16-year-old boy at the border, who gave his name as Ali, said he had fled his house in Albu Kamal with his father and four younger brothers after it was struck by shelling. They had tried to run to a neighbor's house.

"When we went outside the shells hit the houses and shrapnel wounded me," he said, lifting up his football T-shirt to show blood-stained bandages across his stomach.

"The shrapnel hit my father on the head and the children were pushed back by the blasts. I fell on top of my father. He was dead," Ali said.

His brothers were being treated in Qaim hospital where doctors have received scores of wounded Syrians, according to local officials. The family will stay in tents provided by the Iraqi government for now, his mother Hayem said.

"It was Assad's army that shelled our house. Assad's groups killed my husband," she said.

Siri Tips and Tricks: What can I help you with? AppTec

siri?Mirror, O? mirror Tell me who is the most beautiful lady on the earth?? Have you ever come across this popular fairy tale in which the Witch used to ask her mirror and made sure that she is most beautiful on the earth? No, I am not going to repeat the entire tale here. But, I wanted to point out that these stories make basis of some of very advanced technologies in today?s world. Artificially intelligent Siri in iPhone4s is an excellent example of this (in a modified form) where we can talk to objects and they can respond as well. Siri ? your personal digital assistant helps you write email, remember relationships, schedule your meetings, reminds you of anniversaries, update your facebook accounts and a lot more with just a tap. Build a relationship with Siri or I must say, train your Siri in the same way as we train our personal secretaries and you will be able to enjoy the most of her intelligence. We will be sharing a series of Siri tips that will help you in training an intelligent technology (sounds weird, isn?t it?). We have decided to start with the fundamental and most common task i.e. send e-mail with Siri.

Send E-mail with Siri:

We are sharing an example here that clearly describes the step-by-step procedure of ?how to send email with Siri. Unlock your iPhone and tap your microphone (to activate Siri). Observe the dialogue below:?Siri tips_email

Me: Email Mommy

Siri: What?s the subject of the Email?

Me: Award Ceremony

Siri: Ok. What would you like your email to say?

Me: Hi mom, I have good news. I have been nominated for the ?Best Employee of the Year? category and the company is holding a ceremony tonight. I would like you to go with me on this joyous moment. Will you come, dear mom?

Siri: Do you want to send it?

Me: Yes/Send

Siri: Ok, I?ll send it

Dictating an email does not go smooth always. Siri may misunderstand some of your words especially the mumbled words. And, this is the reason we are emphasizing on training Siri because this will develop better speech recognition and you won?t find any difficulty dictating long pieces to her. Siri displays your message body when you are done, go through it once. If you wish to add something in the message, move the text cursor at that place, tap the microphone and say what you forgot. Siri will insert the text there. However, if you want to append it in the last, you may try saying ?Add? and then your message, but it has some limitations (so better stick to moving the cursor way). Siri knows a little about punctuation so only very basic punctuation like new paragraph, comma and full stops are automatically inserted. You can explicitly mention other symbols like say, ?Question Mark? and it will understand that it should insert a question mark sign here rather than typing it. Similarly, you can use a number of commands like ampersand &, asterisk*, open parenthesis (, close parenthesis), exclamation point! etc. Another noteworthy point is to tell Siri about your family by editing your contacts .It will ask you if you want her to remember the relationship. Say ?Yes? so that Siri recalls your relationships next time, and you can say ?Remind my darling wife to get ready till 8? P.M. tonight?

Siri Trick:

siri tips- replyOopz, we forgot that we were unrevealing siri tips and tricks here. Had I been in place of these people in video, I would not have used Siri more than once a week to send e-mail. Why? Because I don?t like answering too many questions and same is the case with many other people, who will second my thought. Ahan, don?t run away! We are going to use Siri for our emails without facing too many questions. Send email with Siri in a single step; after all Siri is intelligent and she knows what you mean.

Hold down the home button and say ?Remind my brother about the interview and say that don?t forget to carry the relevant documents with him?. Siri already knows your younger brother and will place that in the ?To:? field. ?About? will tell Siri the ?Subject:? field and whatever you say after ?And say? is treated as the content of the message.

Reply an Email: Say ?Reply? and send your response.

Send Message:

Similarly, you can also ask Siri to send messages for you. Let?s say you want to message your friend that you want to meet him after university. Tap the microphone and say ?Text Simon and say meet me after university at the City Cafe?. Siri will show you your message and will ask for confirmation if you want Siri to send it. Say yes and Siri will send it.

What?s Next?

We are done with today?s learning task i.e. how to send email with Siri. We will be sharing more Siri tips and tricks in the upcoming posts. Let?s have a look at the video shared below to further clarify your concepts.

If Colonoscopy Picks Up Cancer Risk, Get Next Screen in 5 Years: Study

WEDNESDAY, July 25 (HealthDay News) -- People who have had a colonoscopy during which a high-risk potentially cancerous polyp was removed may not need another colonoscopy for five years, German researchers report.

If this suggestion were to be adopted, it would be a change from the current recommendation in the United States, which calls for another colonoscopy three years after a high-risk polyp -- one that is likely to become cancerous -- is removed.

"This is a case control study, so they didn't follow a group of individuals over time to assess the impact of polyp removal," said Dr. Durado Brooks, director of prostate and colorectal cancers at the American Cancer Society.

That kind of patient follow-up, however, did take place in the study that established the current U.S. recommendations for colonoscopy, he noted.

In addition, while the German study looks at the odds of cancer developing over time, the older study that set the U.S. guidelines looked at the odds of a new polyp developing, Brooks said.

"The time frames they are recommending are something that might be considered, but you cannot make changes in current guidelines based on this study," he said.

The report was published online July 23 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

For the new study, a team lead by Dr. Hermann Brenner, at the German Cancer Research Center, in Heidelberg, looked at medical records of more than 2,500 people who had a cancerous polyp removed and compared them to nearly 1,800 people without such polyps.

They compared surveillance intervals of less than three years, three to five years, and six to 10 years before receiving another colonoscopy.

Looking at the risk of finding colorectal cancer, even for those with high-risk polyps, "strong, statistically significant risk reduction by 60 percent was seen for the less-than-three-years time window and by 50 percent for the three-to-five-years time window," the researchers wrote.

This was true for men, women, young and old, they added.

Their results suggest that surveillance colonoscopy could take place five to 10 years after the a low-risk polyp was found and removed, and possibly also be prolonged to five years for high-risk polyps, the researchers concluded.

The current recommendation for people with high-risk polyps is to have another colonoscopy three years after the polyp was removed, Brooks said.

If new polyps aren't found, then another colonoscopy isn't needed for 10 years, he said.

The 10-year span between colonoscopies is the recommendation for anyone who has a normal colonoscopy, Brooks added.

The advantage of extending the time between colonoscopies from three to five years in patients with high-risk polyps is the use of resources, he said.

The problem is that doctors don't follow the current guidelines.

"If we could get clinicians just to follow the current recommendations we could expand our resources considerably," Brooks said. "Right now far too many people are getting colonoscopies done at intervals that are not recommended by anyone's guidelines."

Some people who have had high-risk polyps get a colonoscopy every year. Many people who have normal colonoscopies get another after five years, Brooks said.

All the evidence shows that colonoscopies every five years is much too frequent, he said.

"We are doing far too many colonoscopies on people who are in the system, but there are at least 40 percent of adults at risk who have never been screened," Brooks said. "If you're 50 and older and never been screened -- get screened."

NATO route suspended over security | Pakistan Today | Latest news ...

PESHAWAR?-?Pakistan has temporarily stopped NATO supply trucks crossing into Afghanistan over security concerns due to fears of attacks, officials said Thursday.

Gunmen on Tuesday attacked a convoy of NATO supply trucks, killing a driver, in the town of Jamrud on the outskirts Peshawar.

"Movement of NATO vehicles has been temporarily suspended since Wednesday evening to beef up security," a paramilitary official told AFP.

"We have launched a search operation in the hills surrounding Jamrud," the official added.

Local administration official Bakhtiar Khan confirmed the supply route had been suspended due to "security reasons".

"Intelligence officials have informed the authority that attacks may occur on NATO vehicles this week and in the light of this a security plan is being chalked out," Khan told AFP.

He said the NATO route would "resume very soon", but that until then trucks carrying supplies for the 130,000-strong US-led mission in Afghanistan had been told not to approach the border.
