VIDEO: Dallas twisters toss tractor trailers into air
At least two tornadoes touched down near Dallas on Tuesday. The National Weather Service declared a tornado emergency for Dallas-Fort Worth, as warning sirens echoed throughout the downtown area. The weather service issued tornado warnings for dozens of counties in the area.
Reports of massive damage across North Texas were rampant, as local television news captured images of the twisters--each thought to be about a half-mile wide. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
"This is as serious of a tornado we've seen in years," meteorologist Larry Mowry said on CBS' Dallas affiliate.
According to Yahoo! Dallas editor Jason Sickles, the first, spotted about 20 miles south of Fort Worth, was believed to be on the ground for 30 minutes.
DFW International Airport was shut down, as airline passengers were rushed to safe areas. Reports of a third tornado near the Texas Motor Speedway circulated. Local highways were closed as funnel clouds raced by.
CNN's WFAA affiliate showed video of one of the tornados "tossing tractor trailers like toys" at a truck depot.
Mike Masco, a meteorologist and senior forecaster with LiveWeatherBlogs.com, tweeted a dramatic image of one truck tossed into the air.
One of the tornadoes narrowly missed the Ballpark in Arlington, where the Rangers were scheduled to play a night exhibition. Mike Napoli, the Rangers catcher, captured footage on his phone. According to Accuweather.com, the Six Flags amusement park in Arlington sustained "significant damage."

Roots of the Roosevelts: An International Controversy
The Four Freedom Awards are organized for the first time in 1982. It is the year of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the 200th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and the United States. The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Four Freedoms Foundation decides to schedule the awards ceremony in two locations. As Zeeland is the acclaimed province of origin of the Roosevelts, its capital Middelburg has been granted the honour of being one of these locations. During even years the ceremony will be held in Middelburg, whereas in uneven years the event takes place in Hyde Park, New York, which is the birthplace of Franklin.
But what if Zeeland is not the genealogical cradle of the Roosevelts?
And if not, should we continue to adhere to such an idyllic lie?
Claes Martenszen van Rosevelt emigrated from the Netherlands to New York City (which was then still Nieuw Amsterdam) somewhere between 1639 and 1648. He is the forbearer of the American Roosevelt family line, including Franklin, Eleanor and Theodore. However, it remains unclear to this day from which part in the Netherlands he originated. No relation to any Dutch family can be proven, and the American relics offer little guidance. At this point we are left with two plausible locations: Oud-Vossemeer and Haarlem.
1) Oud-Vossemeer is a small village on the Zeeuwse island Tholen. In the year 1901, the same year that Theodore becomes the 26th President of the United States, J. van der Minne publishes the family tree of the Roosevelts in the journal De Nederlandsche Leeuw, assuming that the name R(o)osevelt stems from a polder Northwest of the municipality of Tholen. Indeed records are found of a Van Rosevelt family living there, but there are records only from after 1640. Comparing the family crests of this family with the American family line gives few clues to the truth as the crests are completely different, save for the roses.

2) Haarlem, the location suggested by Franklin Delano Roosevelt himself. Researchers had earlier considered this possibility and had searched the province for resemblances in name, but they found no one except for a mayor called Theodoor van Roosevelt living in Amsterdam around 1670. They could not establish a relation between him and Claes Martenszen.
In 1939, journalist Virginia Pearce Delgado visits President Franklin to present him with the above Zeeuwse family crest and a family bible she had found. Upon arrival, Franklin makes clear that he considers his Zeeuwse origins a hoax and that his ancestors were from Haarlem, North Holland:
?I don?t believe a word about this Zeeland business. I think it?s all a grand publicity stunt someone thought up to attract tourists off the beaten tract. There?s a tradition in our family that the Roosevelts came from somewhere near Haarlem.? (PPF 73, Franklin Roosevelt Library)
Franklin himself, who had always had a great interest in genealogy, considered the Jewish family Rossacampo his ancestors. They had fled Spain in 1620 and settled in Haarlem, changing their name to Rosenvelt and eventually Roosevelt. However, their relation to Claes Martenszen van Rosevelt remains unproven up until this day.
3) A final option is that Claes Martenszen adopted a new name upon travelling to America. It is possible that Claes Martenszen adopted the name of his landlords, as was common for peasants in those days. This option would rule in favour of Tholen compared to Haarlem, as the Zeeuwse Van Rosevelts were landowners. This however entails that the actual lineage of the Roosevelts may be rather that of a peasant from Tholen, rather than nobility from Tholen.

Seeing how difficult it is to prove the Zeeuwse lineage of the Roosevelts, is it just to organize the Four Freedom Awards in Middelburg? Should it not be held in Oud-Vossemeer (Tholen), since that is the ?real? location of origin, if we presume the Zeeuwse lineage? Or should we rather host it in Haarlem, as the creator of the Four Freedoms considered is his genealogical home? Or do we forfeit our right to this ceremony and should it be held in New York every year?

Scientists studying 1,600-year-old cotton from the banks of the Nile have found what they believe is the first evidence that punctuated evolution has occurred in a major crop group within the relatively short history of plant domestication.
The findings offer an insight into the dynamics of agriculture in the ancient world and could also help today's domestic crops face challenges such as climate change and water scarcity.
The researchers, led by Dr Robin Allaby from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Warwick, examined the remains of ancient cotton at Qasr Ibrim in Egypt's Upper Nile using high throughput sequencing technologies.
This is the first time such technology has been used on ancient plants and also the first time the technique has been applied to archaeological samples in such hot countries.
The site is located about 40 km from Abu Simbel and 70 km from the modern Sudanese border on the east bank of what is now Lake Nasser.
They also studied South American samples from sites in Peru and Brazil aged between 800 and nearly 4,000 years old.
The results showed that even over the relatively short timescale of a millennia and a half, the Egyptian cotton, identified as G. herbaceum, showed evidence of significant genomic reorganisation when the ancient and the modern variety were compared.
However closely-related G.Barbadense from the sites in South America showed genomic stability between the two samples, even though these were separated by more than 2,000 miles in distance and 3,000 years in time.
This divergent picture points towards punctuated evolution - long periods of evolutionary stability interspersed by bursts of rapid change having occurred in the cotton family.
Dr Allaby said: "We think of evolution as a very slow process, but as we analyse more genome information we can see that there's been a huge amount of large-scale proactive change during recent history.
"Our results for the cotton from Egypt indicate that there has been the potential for more adaptive evolution going on in domesticated plant species than was appreciated up until now.
"Plants that are local to their particular area will develop genes which allow them to better tolerate the stresses they find in the environment around them.
"It's possible that cotton at the Qasr Ibrim site has adapted in response to extreme environmental stress, such as not enough water.
"This insight into how domesticated crops evolved when faced with environmental stress is of value for modern agriculture in the face of current challenges like climate change and water scarcity."
For archaeologists, the results also shed light on agricultural development in the ancient world.
There has long been uncertainty as to whether ancient Egyptians had imported domesticated cotton from the Indian subcontinent, as had happened with other crops, or whether they were growing a native African variety which had been domesticated locally.
The study's findings that the Qasr Ibrim seeds were of the G. herbaceum variety, native to Africa, rather than G. arboreum, which is native to the Indian subcontinent, represents the first molecular-based identification of archaeobotanical cotton to a species level.
Dr Allaby said the findings confirm there was an indigenous domestication of cotton in Africa which was separate from the domestication of cotton in India.
"The presence of cotton textiles on Egyptian and Nubian sites has been well documented but there has always been uncertainty among archaeologists as to the origin of these.
"It's not possible to identify some cotton varieties just by looking at them, so we were asked to delve into the DNA.
"We identified the African variety G. herbaceum, which suggest that domesticated cotton was not a cultural import it was a technology that had grown up independently."
The study Archaeogenomic evidence of punctuated genome evolution in Gossypium, which was funded by NERC, is published in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution.

Syria agrees to April 10 troop pullout from cities
UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Syria told international envoy Kofi Annan that its military will withdraw troops and heavy weapons from populated areas by April 10, in what could be a first step toward ending the bloody yearlong conflict, U.N. diplomats said Monday.
The announcement came as Syrian troops hunted down activists and destroyed their homes in the country's rebellious areas, and the United States remained skeptical of Damascus' latest statements, pointing to previous broken promises.
"We have seen commitments to end the violence followed by massive intensifications of violence," U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice said. "So the United States, for one, would look at these commitments and say, yet again, the proof is the actions, not in the words."
Rice said Annan told the U.N. Security Council he received a letter from Syria's foreign minister on Sunday with the April 10 date and indicated he would have preferred the pullback to begin earlier. Annan urged the Syrian government to start the withdrawal immediately and move no further into populated areas, and "that commitment was provided," Rice added.
"Past experience would lead us to be skeptical and to worry that over the next several days rather than a diminution of the violence, we might, yet again, see an escalation of the violence," said Rice, the current council president. "We certainly hope that is not so. We hope the Syrian authorities will implement the commitments they made without condition or codicils."
Syria's U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari said the April 10 deadline was set "by common accord" between Annan and the Syrian government, and he again pledged his government's complete support for Annan's six-point plan to end the yearlong Syrian crisis.
Annan's plan to end Syria's crisis calls for an immediate withdrawal of troops and heavy military equipment from populated areas, followed by an overall cease-fire ? first by government forces and then by opposition fighters ? to pave the way for talks by all Syrian parties on a political solution. It includes an immediate daily two-hour halt to fighting so humanitarian aid can reach suffering civilians, and unhindered access for humanitarian groups and the media.
Rice stressed that the Syrian agreement was just on the pullout of troops and equipment from cities and towns. She said Annan, who briefed a closed council meeting by videoconference from Geneva, is expecting details from the Syrian government "very shortly" on the other aspects of the plan.
Annan is sending a U.N. peacekeeping team and some staff to Damascus this week to continue preparations for a potential U.N. cease-fire monitoring mission. The joint U.N.-Arab League envoy also was considering borrowing troops from U.N. operations in the Mideast, Rice said.
Rice said Annan asked the Security Council to support the April 10 deadline and start urgently considering a potential U.N. monitoring mission, which would need council authorization. Rice said the Council expressed its full support.
One of the key issues is trying to unite the many different opposition factions under a single umbrella.
Rice said Annan's deputy, Nasser Al-Kidwa, has had "constructive exchanges with the opposition to urge them to cease their operations within 48 hours of a complete cessation of government hostilities." Al-Kidwa attended a meeting of Syrian opposition groups in Istanbul last week.
Assad accepted Annan's plan a week ago, but late Friday the Syrian government rejected Annan's call for the regime to halt violence first.
Annan had appealed for the Syrian authorities to stop military operations first as "the stronger party" in a "gesture of good faith" to the lightly armed opposition.
But Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdessi said Friday the government will not pull tanks and troops from towns and cities engulfed by unrest before life returns to normal there.
That position may have changed, but Syria's Ja'afari said his government expects Annan to get similar commitments from the opposition.
"So far, the Syrian government says that it is committed and we are expecting Mr. Kofi Annan ... to get in touch with the other parties ? those who are involved with initiating, sponsoring and arming the armed groups also ? in order to make the stopping of the violence relevant to all parties," he said.
Key opposition figures joined representatives from more than 70 countries, including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, at Sunday's "Friends of the Syrian People" conference in Istanbul. The "Friends" pledged to send millions of dollars and communications equipment to Syria's opposition groups, pushed for tighter sanctions and diplomatic pressure to further isolate Assad, and urged the opposition to offer a democratic alternative to his regime.
Syria's Ja'afari lashed out at the meeting and its supporters.
"The so-called Conference of the Enemy of Syria in Istanbul is itself a violation and contradiction of Mr. Kofi Annan's mission," he said. "This is a parallel track set up by the enemies of Syria to compete with Mr. Kofi Annan's mission, not only maybe to compete, maybe to undermine his mission as a whole."
Ja'afari said those who want to send money to armed opposition groups or pay their salaries are committing "a violation and declaration of war against the sovereignty of Syria."
Earlier Monday, Russia raised pressure on an old ally, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov saying Syria's government must take the first step toward settling the country's conflict by pulling troops from city streets.
Lavrov's statement at a briefing in Yerevan following talks with his Armenian counterpart appeared to reflect Moscow's increasing impatience with Assad.
Russia, along with China, has twice shielded President Assad from United Nations sanctions over his crackdown on an uprising in which more than 9,000 people have been killed, according to the United Nations. But Moscow also has strongly supported Annan's six-point plan.
Lavrov also warned the West against giving ultimatums to Damascus, saying that the priority now should be to separate the warring parties and open the way for the delivery of humanitarian aid.
"Ultimatums and artificial deadlines rarely help," he said. "We all want a quick end to bloodshed, but that demand should be addressed to all warring parties in Syria."
In Geneva Monday, the president of the Red Cross said he had returned to Syria for a two-day visit aimed at convincing the country's leaders to give more access to aid workers.
Jakob Kellenberger said in a statement that he also will raise "the issue of access to all places of detention" and how to stop the fighting for two hours a day. He said a daily pause is essential to evacuate the wounded and deliver aid.
Lavrov said Russia didn't attend Sunday's meeting of the "Friends of the Syrian People" because its organizers had failed to invite Syrian government representatives.
"I think such an approach is dangerous and contradicts Kofi Annan's efforts," he said. "We are trying to be friends of all the Syrians, and not just some part of the Syrian people."
He said that Moscow will soon host two separate opposition delegations for talks.
