Why Some People Can Eat A Lot and Stay Thin / Nutrition - FitDay

We all have that one friend who seems to defy all laws of calories and weight gain. You know, the one who can put down jumbo-size fries, jelly-filled donuts and staggering portions of spaghetti and never seem to gain an ounce. Is it just luck, or does this person have a weight-maintenance secret that we can all learn from? The latter is most likely, and adopting the tactics of the thin-yet-well-fed crowd can help the rest of us keep (or restore) our trim waistlines.

31_EatThin.jpg
Eat A Lot and Stay Thin? Sounds NEAT!

Health experts are beginning to explore the idea that people who eat all they want and don't gain weight are actually more active than the rest of the population, and therefore burn more calories. However, these folks don't necessarily spend more time at the gym. They probably engage in a practice known as non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT), according to the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

NEAT may sound like a lofty concept, but it's actually quite simple: all physical activity--aside from regimented workouts--counts. When you stand up and pace while talking on the phone, chop cabbage for dinner or even twiddle your thumbs sitting at your desk, you are engaging in NEAT. So that friend who can pig out without consequence probably fidgets more than you do and stands on her feet while you're sitting down.

According to ACE, engaging in NEAT throughout the day can increase your metabolism by up to 50 percent--so if you normally burn 2,000 calories per day while sedentary, NEAT can help you burn up to 3,000 calories per day. That translates to a lot of pasta, and definitely entitles you to dessert.

How to Be NEAT

If NEAT doesn't come naturally to you, you may be able to train yourself by consciously including more small movements into your day. Wiggle your legs or tap your fingers at your work desk, rock back and forth on your heels while waiting in line at the post office, and choose standing over sitting whenever possible. You may also burn more calories by purchasing a pedometer and setting goals for yourself, such as 12,000 steps a day.

Lean Muscle Tissue is Also a Factor

Aside from NEAT, people with fast metabolisms may have one other trick up their sleeve: a high percentage of lean muscle tissue. Muscle takes more calories to maintain than fat, so the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn--even as you sleep. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that you can increase your metabolism by up to 15 percent by building more muscle.

Increasing muscle mass takes time (months, rather than seconds as with NEAT), but the payoff is worth it. Not only will weight control become easier, but you'll also be able to perform everyday activities more capably, and may even help curb arthritis, osteoporosis and back pain. To build more muscle, lift weights, take a vigorous yoga class or simply perform calisthenic exercises like push-ups, squats and sit-ups two to three times per week, working all major muscle groups.

Fred Grimm: In South Florida, psychic fraud is a family affair

Peaches? Come on. Really?

Sorry, but Peaches T. Miller does not conjure up images of voodoo queens and black magic and evil curses and a scam worth $838,000.

To be fair, Peaches? well-do-to Indian-American victim from Sunnydale, Calif., thought she was dealing with a mysterious psychic intervener named Shanna.

The woman had been lured to Peaches by an ad in a publication called India Abroad: ? Worried-Troubled-Confused?? The ad offered the services of ?India?s best renowned Psychic Shanna.?

Eight years later, Shanna?s client was out the $838,000 she had turned over to her trusted healer to properly cleanse it of an evil voodoo curse.

As it turned out, India?s renowned Shanna was actually Pompano Beach?s less-than-renowned Peaches T. Miller, the latest in a long and ignominious string of South Florida psychic scammers. Most of them related.

She was hunted down by private investigator Bob Nygaard, whose work led to her arrest in Broward County. Nygaard has made a speciality out of chasing down these felonious fortunetellers.

Nygaard, based in Boca Raton, usually doesn?t need to travel far. He described South Florida as a kind of safe haven for mystic miscreants, blaming an utter lack of interest in prosecutions by the state attorneys in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

In 2008, the detective nabbed the infamous Gina Marie Marks of Hollywood ? author of the 2006 memoir (as Regina Milbourne) Miami Psychic: Confessions of a Confidante ? twice for a similar psychic money-laundering scam. He tracked down Marks after she persuaded five clients to turn over about $65,000 to be cleansed of evil spirits. She pleaded guilty and got probation.

Her psychic powers, however, could not be contained by some temporal decree. Two years later, Nygaard nabbed her again, this time for a $504,000 fraud. Marks was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Mind you, Gina Marks is not be confused with Rose Marks, the Roma matriarch whose fortune-telling family amassed a $40 million fortune, including a waterfront mansion in Fort Lauderdale.

Rose and clan were finally busted in 2011, charged with running a spiritual extortion racket. Either pay up, and big, or else the likes of the Archangel Michael would wreak havoc. Eight of the nine members of the family pleaded guilty in March. Momma Rose, however, still awaits trial.

Then there was Linda Marks, who pleaded guilty to a fortune-telling fraud scheme in 2006, along with Delray Beach policeman Jack Mackler, who was greasing her operation.

Nygaard sent me a kind of fraudster?s family tree Monday evening. ?Gina Marie Marks? father is John Uwanawich. Gina Marie Marks? brother is Gino Uwanawich. Peaches Miller?s estranged gypsy husband is Gino Uwanawich, making Peaches Miller Gina?s estranged sister-in-law.?

Also, Gina?s daughter Hillarie Miller was implicated last year in yet another fortune-telling scheme. Hillarie, Peaches? niece, is still at large.

When it comes to psychic fraud, South Florida style, it?s all relative.

BlackBerry Q5 Canada release closer following launch

BlackBerry Q5 gets Canada release closer following launch

BlackBerry are trying to win back some of its market share it has lost in the smartphone market over the last few years to Android and iOS, and it got the ball rolling earlier this year with the launch of the new BlackBerry 10 OS. To begin with there were only two flagship devices available but now the BlackBerry Q5 Canada release is getting closer following an official launch for the handset.

Surprisingly the handset manufacturer made the BlackBerry Q5 available in other regions ahead of its home country, but now the company has officially announced the device and revealed it will be available to purchase for consumers from August 13th.

The device will be ideal for BlackBerry users that love their Curve handsets but can?t afford to purchase the BlackBerry Q10, and it has been revealed that the device will land on carriers such as Bell, Fido, Koodo, Sasktel, TELUS, and Virgin Mobile.

It will also be available from third party resellers such as Best Buy Canada, Target, The Mobile Shop, The Source, Walmart, and many more retailers across the country. While the BlackBerry Q5 is a small step down from the Q10 it still shares many of the same features such as the 3.1-inch touchscreen display with its 720 x720 resolution.

It has the same 1.2GHz dual core processor paired with 2GB of RAM and while the devices have the same similar shape the keyboard on the Q5 is the smaller of the two handsets. Camera wise the Q5 sports a 5-megapixel rear camera capable of Full HD video capture while around the front is a 2-megapixel shooter.

Will you be getting the BlackBerry Q5?

Maybe There Won't Be a Manufactured Fiscal Crisis This Fall

Though several Republicans have been threatening a big showdown over the debt limit and government funding with President Obama this fall, it's possible that maybe we won't approach total fiscal calamity this time. In an interview with The National Review's Robert Costa, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell sounds tough, but outlines what could be the outlines of a deal. And top Obama aides have been meeting with eight Senate Republicans to figure out a compromise on these issues, The Wall Street Journal's Peter Nicholas and Kristina Peterson report. But there probably won't be a longer-term "grand bargain."

RELATED: McConnell's Escape Hatch: Let Democrats Raise the Debt Limit

And McConnell, who is up for reelection in 2014 and facing a conservative challenger in the Republican primary, says lots of aggressive-sounding things that might play well with conservative voters. He even makes a gay joke about Sens. John McCain and Chuck Schumer, who worked together on immigration:?"You know, I was kidding [New York Democrat Chuck Schumer] and McCain the other day, and asked, 'When are you all getting married? It's getting almost embarrassing.'"

RELATED: Boehner Declares GOP Victory But Still Faces Tough Math

McConnell warns Democrats, "The tax issue is over." But he suggests Republicans are open to preventing a second year of the sequester. "You want sequester relief? Then let?s talk about a reduction in entitlement spending," he says. "I think a place to talk is on things like chained CPI." Obama has already said he'd support chained CPI, which is a less generous way of calculating the cost-of-living adjustments to Social Security benefits. McConnell also floats raising the age of eligibility for Medicare, which Democrats do not like. McConnell says, "In return for that, we could trade less spending reduction on the discretionary side, because we all know the biggest challenge is actually not on the discretionary side, but on entitlements. To me, that?s a better place to go in the fall than signaling that you?re open to raising taxes."

RELATED: Forget Peas: Jon Stewart Wants the GOP to Start Paying for Beer

There are still big sticking points. A dozen Republican senators have said they'll shutdown the government unless Obama agrees to defund Medicare.?Marco Rubio even has an essay titled "Shut Down ObamaCare, Not Government" at the conservative blog RedState on Monday. The senator who got that movement started, Utah's Mike Lee, suggested on Sunday that he wanted to keep deep cuts, but spare the Pentagon. "What we need to do is make sensible cuts, not back away from the cuts, but make sure that we're not taking them disproportionately out of those brave men and women who are protecting us," Lee said. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said the White House would not accept bills that only spared the Pentagon from those spending cuts.

RELATED: How the Debt Limit Deal Passed the House

Even so,?many other Republican senators have said threatening a shutdown over Obamacare is a dumb idea.?Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee tells the Journal that the GOP senators are meeting with White House aides to "deal with our fiscal issues in more intelligent ways than now exist."?

Republicans weigh short-term U.S. budget measure

By David Lawder and Caren Bohan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With time running out for the Congress to agree on next year's budget, some Republicans are pushing for a short-term fix that would delay the confrontation over a government shutdown until November.

If lawmakers agree on a short-term plan to fund the government for a few weeks past the current October 1 deadline, it would mean that the fight over government funding for next year would coincide with a potentially more consequential clash over raising the federal borrowing limit.

House Republican aides said a growing number of party lawmakers want to try to buy more time to agree on funding levels for government agencies and programs, though no decisions have been made.

One aide said a short-term spending measure would be a "no-drama" way to allow the House and Senate extra time to work on annual spending bills.

Another Republican aide said there would be advantages to tackling differences over government funding at the same time Congress is debating conditions for increasing the debt limit.

House Republican leaders have not made any decisions yet on whether to seek a short-term spending measure known as a "continuing resolution" because the chamber is still focused on passing its 12 appropriations bills, said Michael Steel, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner.

President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans are bracing for a major budget battle this fall as they try to resolve deep divisions over taxes, automatic spending cuts known as the sequester, and whether to rein in costly federal benefits programs.

BACK-TO-BACK DEADLINES

As Congress prepares for a five-week recess that starts on Friday, it is grappling with two deadlines - the need for government funding legislation as it starts the new fiscal year on October 1 and the need to raise the $16.7 trillion debt limit to avoid default, likely sometime in November.

Once lawmakers return from their break on September 9, they have only nine legislative days to work out differences before the October 1 deadline to avert a government shutdown.

"There's not much time," said Tad DeHaven, a budget analyst at the libertarian Cato Institute in Washington. "So it looks to me like a continuing resolution. The only question is what number."

Obama's Democrats and congressional Republicans are deeply divided over spending levels for the new fiscal year. Republicans want to keep savings from the automatic cuts in place and have written their spending bills to a $967 billion cap, the lowest in a decade.

Democrats, meanwhile, view that spending limit as far too austere and are proposing a higher cap of $1.058 trillion. The caps apply to programs ranging from education to national parks to the military.

Some aides say one way to find common ground on a short-term funding fix would be to keep funding at this year's annualized level - about $988 billion - for a few additional weeks.

Given the polarization between the two parties, even hammering out a short-term agreement could be challenging, though Congress has often resorted to temporary funding extensions at the start of a new fiscal year.

Democrats are likely to insist that any funding extension replaces the sequester cuts, which are now causing temporary layoffs at government agencies and military contractors alike.

"We want sequestration to be turned off, not extended," said Matthew Dennis, spokesman for Representative Nita Lowey, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee.

Many Republicans want to keep the sequester in place and view the debt limit as a key leverage point to demand even deeper spending cuts, particularly reforms to the Social Security and Medicare programs for the elderly.

However, pushing the government too close to a debt default would likely cause turmoil in financial markets. This happened during the bruising budget fight of 2011, when congressional dysfunction over the issue prompted Standard and Poor's to strip the United States of its top-tier credit rating.

NASA's Curiosity logs longest Mars day trip yet

NASA's Curiosity rover trekked more than twice it's previous record for a day trip on Sunday, moving 329 feet. Scientists credited the feat to good visibility. Longer trips like this may become more common when the vehicle switches to automatic navigation in a couple weeks.

The 1-ton?Curiosity rover?made by far the longest drive of its nearly year-long surface mission on Sunday (July 21), traversing 329 feet (100.3 meters) of Martian terrain. The robot's one-day distance record prior to Sunday had been 161 feet (49 m), NASA officials said.

Good views of Curiosity's surroundings allowed the rover to cover so much ground on Sunday, the 340th Martian day, or sol, of its Red Planet mission. [Curiosity's Latest Amazing Mars Photos]

"What enabled us to drive so far on Sol 340 was starting at a high point and also having Mastcam images giving us the size of rocks so we could be sure they were not hazards," rover planner Paolo Bellutta, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said in a statement, referring to Curiosity's head-mounted camera system.

"We could see for quite a distance, but there was an area straight ahead that was not clearly visible, so we had to find a path around that area," Bellutta added.

While Bellutta and his colleagues guided Sunday's drive, mission team members plan to start using the rover's autonomous navigation capability soon. Long treks may thus become more and more common for Curiosity in the coming weeks, officials said.

The car-size rover is three weeks into an epic journey to a huge and mysterious mountain called?Mount Sharp, which rises 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometers) into the Red Planet sky. The team is targeting a spot near Mount Sharp's base that lies nearly 5 miles (8 km) from Curiosity's current location.

Mission scientists want Curiosity to climb up through Mount Sharp's foothills, reading the history of Mars' changing environmental conditions as it goes.

Rover team members have said the drive to Mount Sharp may take a year or so. There is no set timeline, however, as mission scientists want the freedom to check out interesting features and formations along the way.

Curiosity touched down on Aug. 5, 2012, kicking off a planned two-year surface mission to determine if Mars could ever have supported microbial life. The rover has already checked off this goal, finding that an area near its landing site?was indeed habitable?billions of years ago.

The rover's odometery stands at 0.81 miles (1.23 km) as of today (July 23), NASA officials said. Curiosity's top speed over flat, hard ground is about 0.09 mph (0.14 km/h).

Cold Cast Bronze Octopus Single Toggle Light Switch Cover. Wall Decor Animal wall Art Sculpture Decor & Houswares Decorative Arts by SookeSculptures

Due to the amazing and humbling, popularity of the original https://www.etsy.com/listing/110107401/octopus-light-switch-cover

I decided I would offer this Octopus style cover done in a Cold Cast Bronze process.

Cold Cast Bronze, is a process that uses pure finely ground metal powder mixed with equal parts polymer resins. The result is in fact a metal finish that looks and acts like the real thing, because well it is the real thing. The finish then gets buffed with triple OX wool to bring out the shine of the bronze.

All though this process is more expensive than the original plain resin process, it still is a lot cheaper than having the piece cast in pure bronze, but has the same look and finish as a real bronze piece.

Fits single toggle style light covers.

*Comes with Brass screws (2nd picture).

Dimensions: 11.5cm, long X 7cm High

For most of human history, long-distance relationships have been impossible to sustain due to travel reasons alone. The internet age has made it much more feasible, but as I found out with my girlfriend, romance and relationships are a different beast when thousands of miles separate you.

When compared to point-and-shoot cameras, DSLRs come with the promise of superior image quality and increased shooting flexibility. It?s much more than that, though: many upgrade and completely miss major benefits of using a high-end camera. If you?ve got a DSLR, make sure you know about these features before you take another photograph.

Dear Lifehacker,
When I'm out shopping, I'm always presented with the option to use debit or credit when I check out. I've heard there are benefits to using credit, but aren't there fees involved that can drive up the price or put a strain on the owner of the shop I'm in? When should I use which? Is there even a difference?

Rick Warren returns to pulpit after son's suicide

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Nearly four months after his son's suicide, popular pastor Rick Warren returned to the pulpit Saturday afternoon at the Southern California megachurch he founded.

Warren, dressed in his usual casual black T-shirt and jeans, took the stage at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif. with wife, Kay Warren, and was greeted with a long standing ovation by the congregation.

A shout of "We love you!" came from the crowd before Warren began.

"I love you, too," a smiling Warren replied. "Have I told you lately that I love you?"

It was the first time Warren had taken the Saddleback pulpit since his 27-year-old son Matthew shot and killed himself on April 5.

In the sermon, first in a series called "How To Get Through What You're Going Through," Rick Warren said he had the perfect role model for his struggles.

"God knows what it's like to lose a son," Warren said.

He remained mostly composed, but choked back tears at times, including when he thanked his surviving two children.

"How proud I was of Amy and Josh, who for 27 years loved their younger brother," Warren said. "They talked him off the ledge time after time. They are really my heroes."

He delivered a formal, prepared speech with notes and quotes from Scripture but often broke off to talk frankly about his son.

"I was in shock for at least a month after Matthew took his life," Warren said.

But, Warren said he was grateful to come from "a family of spiritual redwoods."

"Satan picked the wrong team to pick on," he said.

Warren has been an essential figure in the modern, megachurch brand of Christianity.

His multimillion-selling book "The Purpose Driven Life" made him a national star in the realms of religion and self-help, and he delivered the opening prayer at President Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration.

Saddleback, the church he founded in 1980, has grown to 20,000 members, according to Warren's biography on the church's website.

But in April, Matthew Warren, after a lifetime of struggle with depression, shot and killed himself in what Warren at the time called "a momentary wave of despair."

"For 27 years I prayed every day of my life for God to heal my son's mental illness," Warren said.

But Warren said Saturday that he intended to turn his grief into a message of service and hope.

"God wants to take your greatest sorrow and turn it into your life's greatest message," he said.

Egypt's Mursi accused of murder, kidnapping before rallies

By Crispian Balmer and Asma Alsharif

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Egyptian army is detaining ousted President Mohamed Mursi over accusations of kidnapping, killing soldiers and other charges, the state news agency said on Friday.

The army had previously said it was holding Mursi for his own safety and the report was likely to stoke tension before mass rallies on Friday billed as shows of strength between supporters and opponents of the Islamist Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected leader.

Both sides warned of the potential for bloodshed in Egypt, which has been convulsed by political and economic turmoil since the 2011 uprising that ended 30 years of autocratic rule by the U.S.-backed Hosni Mubarak.

State news agency Mena said the mooted charges against Mursi included conspiring with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, killing prisoners and officers "deliberately with prior intent", kidnapping officers and soldiers, and setting fire to the prison of Wadi el-Natroun.

They relate to his escape from the prison in 2011, when he was arrested during the uprising against Mubarak, and provide legal grounds for his continued detention.

Mursi has been held by the military since the army ousted him from office on July 3 following huge street protests against his troubled, one-year rule. Washington has previously called for him to be freed.

His Muslim Brotherhood denounced news of the accusations.

"At the end of the day we know all of these charges are nothing more than the fantasy of a few army generals and a military dictatorship," Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad said. "We are continuing our protests on the streets."

Throwing down the gauntlet to the Brotherhood, army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has called on Egyptians to rally nationwide on Friday to give the military a "mandate" to confront weeks of violence unleashed by Mursi's removal.

A military official said the army had given Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood a Saturday deadline to end its resistance and join a military-set road map to new elections, signalling a turning point in the confrontation.

The Brotherhood fears a crackdown to wipe out an Islamist movement that emerged from decades in the shadows to win every election since Mubarak's fall but then struggled to tackle Egypt's growing economic and social woes.

CIVIL WAR

The army has threatened to "turn its guns" on those who use violence. The Brotherhood warned of civil war.

"We will not initiate any move, but will definitely react harshly against any calls for violence or black terrorism from Brotherhood leaders or their supporters," an army official told Reuters.

A few hundred pro-army supporters gathered early Friday morning in Tahrir Square, centre of two years of turmoil in Egypt, before the main rally which might not peak until after the evening prayer marking the end of the day's Ramadan fast.

"The people, the army and the police are one hand," shouted a policeman, leading a group of chanters.

Armoured personnel carriers guarded every entrance to the square.

The Brotherhood, which has manned a street vigil for almost a month with thousands of followers demanding Mursi's return, has called for its own counter-demonstrations.

Confrontation appeared inevitable following a month of clashes in which close to 200 people, mainly supporters of Mursi, have been killed. Many people in the Arab world's most populous country feared the worst.

"I'm staying home all day, it's too dangerous to work. I didn't think things in Egypt could get this bad, but every day you hear about clashes and deaths," said Shadi Mohamed, a 22-year-old taxi driver. "Egypt is a disaster."

There is deepening alarm in the West over the course taken by the country of 84 million people, a pivotal nation between the Middle East and North Africa and recipient of $1.5 billion a year in mainly military aid from the United States.

Signalling its displeasure at recent events, Washington said this week it had delayed delivery of four F-16 fighter jets to Cairo and called on the Egyptian army to exercise "maximum restraint and caution" during Friday's rallies.

Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, however, said on Thursday the Obama administration did not intend to rule on whether Mursi's overthrow constituted a coup, wording that would have triggered the cutoff of U.S. aid.

CONFUSION

Mursi and many other Brotherhood leaders were rounded up by the authorities during the 2011 uprising that eventually swept Mubarak from power.

Many managed to escape in the ensuing confusion, alongside militants from Hamas, a Palestinian offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood that governs in the neighbouring Gaza Strip.

Mursi and his fellow Brotherhood members have said they were freed by local residents from the Wadi el-Natroun prison. State news agency Mena said investigating judge Hassan Samir had already confronted Mursi with evidence during questioning.

Brotherhood supporters have been camped out in a Cairo square since June 28, guarded by men with sticks behind barricades and sandbags. They fear a repeat of the July 8 killing of more than 50 Mursi supporters when security forces opened fire outside a Cairo barracks.

Witnesses said army helicopters had dropped flyers at the vigil calling on people to refrain from violence. The Brotherhood says it is the authorities themselves who have stirred up violence to justify their crackdown.

Sisi delivered his call for rallies on Wednesday in full military uniform and dark sunglasses. He was appointed by Mursi in a bid by the president to rein in Egypt's all-powerful military, but Sisi turned against him after a year in which the economy floundered and support for the Brotherhood fell.

(AP) ? Former Rep. Lindy Boggs, a plantation-born Louisianan who used her soft-spoken grace to fight for civil rights during nearly 18 years in Congress after succeeding her late husband in the House, died Saturday. She was 97.

Boggs, who later served three years as ambassador to the Vatican during the Clinton administration, died of natural causes at her home in Chevy Chase, Md., according to her daughter, ABC News journalist Cokie Roberts.

Boggs' years in Congress started with a special election in 1973 to finish the term of her husband, Thomas Hale Boggs Sr., whose plane disappeared over Alaska six months earlier. Between them, they served a half-century in the House.

"It didn't occur to us that anybody else would do it," Roberts said in explaining why her mother was the natural pick for the congressional seat. Her parents, who had met in college, were "political partners for decades," she said, with Lindy Boggs running her husband's political campaigns and becoming a player on the Washington political scene.

Roberts called her mother "a trailblazer for women and the disadvantaged."

When Boggs announced her retirement in 1990, she was the only white representing a black-majority district in Congress. "I am proud to have played a small role in opening doors for blacks and women," she said at the time.

As family tragedy brought her in to Congress, so did it usher her out. At the time of her July 1990 announcement, her daughter Barbara Boggs Sigmund, mayor of Princeton, N.J., was dying of cancer. Sigmund died that October.

Her son, Thomas Hale Boggs Jr., is a leading Washington lawyer and lobbyist.

The elder Boggs was first elected to Congress in 1940, two years after the couple married. Both were also active in local reform groups.

Lindy Boggs was more than the typical congressional wife. She ran several of her husband's political campaigns and helped him in his Washington and New Orleans offices.

"Early on, Hale established with politicians at home that I was his direct representative and that they could say anything to me that they could say to him. Whatever decisions I made, they would be his final decisions," she said in 1976.

Breaking with most Southern whites, Lindy Boggs saw civil rights as an inseparable part of the political reform movement of the 1940s and '50s.

"You couldn't want to reverse the injustices of the political system and not include the blacks and the poor. It was just obvious," she said in 1990.

She worked for the Civil Rights Acts of 1965 and 1968, Head Start and other programs to help minorities, the poor and women.

After she entered Congress, Boggs used her seat on the House Appropriations Committee to steer money to New Orleans and the rest of the state. As a member of the House Banking and Currency Committee, she used typical steely grace to include women in the Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974.

"I ran into a room where there was a copying machine, wrote in 'sex and marital status' on the bill, and made 47 copies," she said. "When I took it back into the subcommittee meeting, I told them I was sure it was just an oversight on their part."

Boggs changed the way politics operated, former Sen. J. Bennett Johnston, D-La., once said.

"I've seen it time after time," Johnston said. "On difficult issues, powerful men and women are going toe to toe, sometimes civilly, sometimes acrimoniously. Lindy Boggs will come into the room. The debate will change. By the time she leaves the room, she usually has what she came to get."

As the first woman to chair the Democratic National Convention, in 1976, she decreed that she would be addressed as "Madam Chairwoman," rather than "Madam Chairman" or "Madam Chairperson."

"I'm a woman," she said. And, "Why should it be neuter?"

When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, one of the hardest-hit facilities was Lindy Boggs Medical Center, a historic hospital named in her honor the previous year.

Her Bourbon Street home also was damaged and The Washington Post reported in February 2006 that she was living in a hotel nearby.

"There are worlds of friends I miss," she told the newspaper. "The culture is not there."

Corinne Claiborne was born March 13, 1916, on a plantation near New Orleans, a descendant of William C.C. Claiborne, the state's first elected governor. She attended Sophie Newcomb College, affiliated with Tulane University, and met her future husband when both were editors of the Tulane student paper. She taught school between graduation in 1935 and their marriage in 1938.

As part of a group of well-connected women called the Independent Women's Organization, she took to the street in a "Broom Brigade" in 1945, sweeping the streets to publicize the need to sweep out graft and corruption.

In her first election for Congress, in March 1973, she had to overcome prejudice against her gender and privileged background.

Said her Republican opponent, Robert E. Lee: "I've covered this district by foot, by car, by air. This is something that takes a strong, healthy man. ... A socialite is not going to do this district any good in Congress."

Her constituents disagreed, giving her at least 60 percent of the vote in every election from then on.

Her Vatican posting was from 1997 to early 2001, and she said her goals were to work with the Vatican on promoting democracy, tolerance, religious freedom, peace and human rights.

In 2000, she announced that she would resign after President Bill Clinton left office, no matter which party won. "It's been an honor and a privilege and a wonderful opportunity to be in this position, but it's also extremely exhausting," she said at the time.

Shortly before Pope John Paul II died in 2005, she joined those praying for him. "I have a thousand wonderful memories of him," Boggs said. "I have been very, very fond of this pope for a very long time."

In addition to her children, Boggs is survived by eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

A Simple Google Search Allowed This Reporter To Hack 8 Smart Homes

Microsoft House Of Future 35

Filmateria Digital LLC

It's a little scary that a simple Google search allowed someone to hack into eight smart homes.?

"Smart homes" are houses that are fully wired and internet-enabled, so that owners can control devices ? like door locks and thermostats ? remotely from their desktops or phones.

A "smart homes" Google search led writer Kashmir Hill to a list of homes with an automation system from Insteon, she writes on Forbes.

Insteon allows home owners to remotely control lights, televisions, fans, garage doors, and other devices from their smartphones or computers.

Since Insteon's systems are web crawlable, they showed up in search results. Insteon also didn't require user names and passwords in a since-discontinued product.?

So from San Francisco, Hill was able to control the lights and other things in people's houses in Oregon and Connecticut.

Here's what she was able to see from the eight homes she accessed:

  • All the appliances and devices people had
  • Time zone
  • Closest major city to home
  • IP address
  • In one case, the actual street address

Earlier this year, Insteon fixed the problem and recalled the device. But it didn't tell customers that the security vulnerability was one of the reasons for it.?Insteon blamed user error for why it appeared in search results.?

Still, it's pretty crazy that this happened. Head on over to Forbes to read the full account.

@4 Gee maybe it's because on every melee kill the time slows down and the button prompt comes up. Sure you can ignore it, but you will still kill the enemy automatically with a less flashy kill and fewer rewards. In God of War only some enemies get the giant O over their head which lets you choose if you want to perform it, which usually gets you more health and magic. However if you don't hit the button you won't auto kill the enemy and you can kill it normally for more red orbs. I'm not a huge fanboy one way or the other but your comparison is just terrible.

Dr Abu Sakara

Dr Foster Abu Sakara, the 2012 presidential candidate of the Convention People?s Party (CPP), has advised the electorate to be careful with the choices they make because they are accountable to the society.

Speaking at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences forum on the topic ?Political Accountability and Good Governance,? Dr Sakara said politicians entered into offices through the electorate and it was important they (electorate) demanded accountability from them as well.

?The electorate are accountable to the society and should be blamed if they make the wrong choice for the country,? he said.

He said Ghana was endowed with rich natural mineral resources such gold, diamond, oil, cocoa, manganese and bauxite, a prospect that surpassed other countries on the African continent.

Dr Sakara said it was therefore imperative for any leader voted into office to use the nation?s resources for development since there was no basis to fail.

?Any politician, who fails to use the rich natural resources available for the development of the country, should be held accountable,? he added.

He also called for the passage of the Right to Information Bill to enable the public to have access to any information pertaining to the governance of the country.

Mr Vitus Azeem, Executive Director, Ghana Integrity Initiative, said lack of political accountability and weak governance fueled corruption, adding that nepotism, lobbying and extortion could also cause serious harm to the national economy.

He said professional groups such as accountants, lawyers, journalists and other civil society organisations must see themselves as playing a watchdog role and providing a sustained and credible leadership in demand for political accountability and good governance.

Germany seeks EU support for global Internet privacy charter

Internet

Germany has urged fellow European Union member states to support its drive for a new global charter protecting personal privacy online.

A letter sent by Germany's foreign and justice ministers to their EU counterparts cites the debate over U.S. intelligence-gathering on the Internet as a reason to expand a 1966 U.N. treaty guaranteeing privacy.

The letter released Wednesday calls for an international agreement that protects privacy in the digital age and suggests convening a meeting of all 167 parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The United States ratified the treaty in 1992.

The claims about U.S. online spying made by National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden have become an election issue in Germany two months before the country goes to the polls.

Mechanism behind squids' and octopuses' ability to change color revealed

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Color in living organisms can be formed two ways: Pigmentation or anatomical structure. Structural colors arise from the physical interaction of light with biological nanostructures. A wide range of organisms possess this ability, but the biological mechanisms underlying the process have been poorly understood. Now researchers have delved deeper to uncover the mechanism responsible for the dramatic changes in color used by such creatures as squids and octopuses.
