HTC's bone-shaking BoomSound front facing speakers are making their way to Windows Phone later this year. The 8XT, which appears to be a slightly tweaked variant of last year's 8S, will launch on Sprint's 4G LTE network for $99.99 with a two-year contract -- after a $50 rebate card. Powered by a 1.4 GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor paired up with 1GB of RAM, we want to say the 8XT has the same 4.3 inch 720p screen as its older cousin, but the spec sheet in our hands merely says "crisp". The front of the phone has a 1.6-megapixel camera, while the rear has an 8-megapixel shooter. You'll also have to make do with 8GB of memory for your music, but microSD expansion means you can easily make room for more.
Update: We can now confirm the 8XT has a 800 x 480 pixel resolution screen.

Sheri was the first (fake) victim on the "Whodunnit?" premiere.
As the premiere episode of ABC's reality TV murder mystery "Whodunnit?" opened Sunday night, a voiceover explained that the contestants knew they were there to play a game, but "what they don't know is: The game is murder."
As it turned out, the contestants weren't the only ones who didn't quite know all the details. For instance, viewers knew the show was a murder mystery, but it's now clear what many of them didn't know was that the murders weren't real.
That's right, despite the fact that killing off contestants would be illegal (and, of course, just plain wrong), some believed that two players might have actually been killed as part of the show.
Concerned viewers even took to Twitter after the first person, Sheri, met her (not really) final fate.
Even after contestant Melina said, "In my heart, I know it's not a dead body, but it feels too real," some viewers remained suspicious.
When Dontae fled the "Whodunnit?" mansion in flames at the end of the show, even more shocked viewers tweeted their fears.
Of course, there was no need to worry about anyone. The mystery -- not the murder -- is the reality in this competition.
Check out the next faux fatalities when "Whodunnit?" airs Sunday night at 9 p.m. on ABC.

Not to be forgotten amid other new Samsung products, the company has announced that its complete Galaxy Tab 3 line-up will arrive in the US next month. The tablet family launches in the US on July 7, with all three screensizes (7-, 8- and 10.1 inches) will be available from Best Buy, Amazon, Wal-Mart, Office Depot, other bricks-and-mortar retailers and Samsung's own online store. As a refresher, the entry-level Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 is priced up at $199 and sports a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 8GB of storage (plus microSD expansion), and a 7-inch 1,024 x 600 TFT display. There's Android Jelly Bean (4.1) from the outset, as well as the Samsung's apps and built-in hubs.
Increasing the screen to eight inches, the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 ($299), bumps up the specifications elsewhere too, with a more potent Exynos 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and higher-resolution (1,280 x 800) TFT display. It's got the very latest Android build (4.2), as well as a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera capable of 720p video capture. Storage is also doubled to 16GB, with extra space available through microSD and 1.5GB of RAM to keep apps running smoothly
Finally, there's the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 ($399), which packs an Intel Z2560 processor (1.6GHz dual-core) and the same resolution as the Tab 3 8.0, albeit stretched a little further. It also matches the smaller model on storage and camera specs, although RAM has inexplicably dropped to just a single gig. The larger model does include a built-in IR blaster, however, as well as Samsung's WatchON TV recommendation service. All three WiFi-only models will arrive in white and a previously-leaked gold brown hue -- preorders start tomorrow.

Whether you need another option or not, Flytecam is a 1080p POV video camera that's looking to compete. It has specs that land it between GoPro's lowest and middle tier offerings, but it's supposed to be cheaper and doesn't require waterproof or shock resistant cases.
Flytecam has a rubberized body, is waterproof down to 3 meters, has an 120? lens and shoots 60fps for slow motion in 720p. It claims a three hour battery life and was developed alongside a "flytemount" that uses neodymium magnets and rubber teeth to secure the camera for mounting (see below).
Pre-order is starting soon and pricing alone will decide whether this is a legitimate competitor (the base model GoPro is currently $200). But Flytecam's creators claim that they started the project "because we couldn?t find a product that we really wanted, (and most certainly couldn?t afford)." Okay, well then it better be cheap. TORONTO (AP) ? Add a new chapter to Munenori Kawasaki's remarkable run.
Kawasaki hit his first career home run, a game-tying shot in the seventh inning, Rajai Davis singled home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the Toronto Blue Jays rallied for their ninth straight win, 7-6 over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.
"The legend grows, the Kawasaki legend grows, and rightfully so," Blue Jays pitcher R.A. Dickey said.
Kawasaki went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Eight of his 17 RBIs this season have come against the Orioles: he also beat them with a two-run double in the ninth inning of a 6-5 win on May 26.
"He's been doing that all year," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "He's done a tremendous job for us."
Kawasaki has been playing shortstop for Toronto in the absence of Jose Reyes, who's been out since April 13 with a sprained left ankle. Reyes is currently rehabbing with Triple-A Buffalo and could be back Monday.
But Kawasaki's continued heroics might just make him indispensable.
"Nobody has said that Kawasaki was going down," Gibbons said. "People might assume that but we don't know what's going to happen, to be honest."
Casey Janssen (2-0) worked one inning for the win while Adam Lind and Edwin Encarnacion both homered for the Blue Jays, who reached .500 for the first time since July 30, 2012.
"We're starting to become family and it's showing," Dickey said.
Toronto has won 13 of its past 16 and has gone 26-15 since May 2, when they were a season-worst 10-21.
"We've definitely come back to life, that's for sure," Gibbons said. "We're riding a nice high right now."
Facing Orioles reliever Brian Matusz (2-1), Maicer Izturis singled to begin the ninth and moved to second on Josh Thole's sacrifice. Pinch-hitter Mark DeRosa was intentionally walked to bring up Kawasaki. With the crowd of 35,472 chanting his name, Kawasaki moved up both runners with a grounder.
"Unbelievable," Kawasaki said of the ovation. "I was nervous."
Pedro Strop came on to face Davis, who lined a single over the head of shortstop J.J. Hardy. Davis' teammates poured out of the dugout in celebration, mobbing him and tearing off his jersey.
"We've got to give credit to Kawasaki," Davis said. "He had some big hits with men on base. My hit doesn't even happen without those big hits."
Chris Davis hit his major league leading 27th home run for the Orioles, who also got homers from Hardy and Ryan Flaherty.
Toronto took an early lead when Lind hit a two-run homer off Jason Hammel in the first, his 10th. Hammel has allowed 10 runs in the first inning of his 15 starts this season.
Hardy's hit a two-out solo shot in the second, his 15th, to cut it to 2-1, but the Blue Jays got a run in the fifth on Kawasaki's two-out RBI single.
Nate McLouth singled to open the sixth and Nick Markakis drew a one-out walk. McLouth scored on Adam Jones' base hit and Davis followed with his third homer in the past two games.
Davis had two homers and five RBIs in Wednesday's 13-3 win over Detroit.
Encarnacion answered with a leadoff drive in the bottom half, his 20th, cutting it to 5-4, but Flaherty's leadoff drive in the seventh restored Baltimore's two-run lead.
Tommy Hunter replaced Hammel to begin the seventh and gave up a leadoff single to Izturis, Two outs later, Kawasaki tied it at 6 by hitting a 1-1 pitch into the right field bullpen.
Kawasaki said he felt like he was dreaming as he circled the bases for his first homer in 247 big league at bats.
"I would say that it's no surprise but that home run was a surprise," Dickey joked.
Called out of the dugout for a curtain call, Kawasaki bowed several times before tipping his cap.
All three Baltimore homers came off Dickey, who matched a season-worst by allowing three longballs.
Dickey allowed six runs and seven hits in six-plus innings. The right-hander, who walked two and struck out five, has a 6.02 ERA in eight home starts this season.
"I had a pretty good knuckleball going into the game, threw a couple of hangers up there and they got punished in bad situations," Dickey said.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter was ejected in the second for arguing with plate umpire Angel Hernandez. He was replaced by bench coach John Russell.
Davis struck out swinging to begin the inning, but the pitch got away from catcher Thole and Hernandez ruled it a foul ball as Thole threw to first base. Gibbons came out and the umpires huddled, then called Davis out.
That brought out Showalter for an animated discussion with Hernandez. After being tossed, Showalter pointed at all four umpires, then mimicked throwing them out of the game.
"I don't know if the umpires considered the fact that two wrongs don't make a right," said Showalter, who was ejected for the first time this season.

ST PETERSBURG, Russia/UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned the West on Friday against arming Syrian rebel forces, which he said included "terrorist" groups, and warned that a swift exit by President Bashar al-Assad risked creating a dangerous power vacuum.
"If the United States ... recognizes one of the key Syrian opposition organizations, al-Nusra, as terrorist ... how can one deliver arms to those opposition members?" Putin told a panel with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "Where will they end up? What role will they play?"
Putin defended his own country's arm sales to the embattled Syrian government as "entirely legal, repeating Russia's position that outsiders should not determine the fate of Assad and Syria.
"If Assad goes today, a political vacuum emerges - who will fill it?" Putin said at a later news conference with Merkel. "Maybe those terrorist organizations. Nobody wants this - but how can it be avoided? After all, they are armed and aggressive."
The only solution, he said, was an international peace conference that Russia and the United States are seeking to convene.
A U.N. human rights investigator warned on Friday that an increased flow of arms to Syria's government and rebel forces would likely result in increased war crimes in a two-year civil war that has killed some 93,000 people.
"States who provide arms have responsibilities in terms of the eventual use of those arms to commit ... war crimes or crimes against humanity," said Paulo Pinheiro, chairman of a U.N. commission of inquiry on rights violations in Syria.
With Russia and Iran arming Assad's forces, and Lebanon's Hezbollah fighters joining the war on his behalf, Western powers have agreed to step up aid to the mainly Sunni rebels.
U.S. President Barack Obama, citing the Syrian government's alleged use of chemical weapons, decided last week to provide military aid to rebels fighting to overthrow Assad.
Obama said on Friday the United States was leaving about 700 combat-equipped troops in Jordan after a training exercise there, at the request of Amman. The United States previously decided to leave Patriot missiles and warplanes in the country.
Jordan fears a spillover of the Syrian war into its territory, where an estimated half million Syrian refugees have fled to escape the bloodshed.
With both countries keeping an eye on the war, Obama told Congress in a letter that the troops would remain until the security situation became such that they were no longer needed.
The European Union lifted its arms embargo on Syria last month. Britain and France have spoken in favor of potentially arming the rebels, but have not yet taken any decisions.
Western powers had been reluctant in the past to arm the rebels because of concerns about the rising strength of Sunni Islamist insurgents who have pledged loyalty to al Qaeda.
France sent 16 tonnes (1 tonne = 1.102 tons) of medical aid to northern Syria on Friday, including antidotes for nerve agents, as rebels prepared to face an assault on the city of Aleppo by Assad's forces.
GROWING MIDDLE EAST DIVIDE
A U.N. spokeswoman said senior U.S. and Russian officials would meet with the international mediator on Syria in Geneva on Tuesday to discuss a peace conference.
An international peace conference is not expected to occur before August after G8 leaders clashed with Russia over the nature of a transitional government.
Foreign ministers of the Friends of Syria group of nations, which backs the opposition, will meet in Qatar on Saturday to discuss how to help the rebel Free Syrian Army defend the northern city of Aleppo.
The insurgents have suffered a recent series of battlefield setbacks and are besieged on the outskirts of Damascus by advancing government forces, who have begun to regain the upper hand.
Two years of fighting have dragged Syria's neighbors into a deadly confrontation between Shi'ite Iran supporting Assad, whose Alawite sect derives from Shi'ite Islam, and Sunni Arab Gulf nations backing the rebels.
In Beirut, the Lebanese army sealed off the parliamentary district on Friday and threatened stern action against violence after a night of unrest triggered by the Syrian war and political paralysis at home. The fighting in Syria has driven half a million Syrian refugees into Lebanon.
Sectarian violence has intensified in Lebanon because of the Syrian conflict across the border, where Lebanon's Shi'ite militia Hezbollah and Lebanese Sunni gunmen have joined opposing sides of the war.
A Cabinet minister in Iraq's Shi'ite-led government said on Friday that thousands of Shi'ite Muslims from Iraq and beyond would take up arms against Sunni al Qaeda 'savages" if fellow Shi'ites or their shrines came under further attack.
Hadi al-Amiri, Iraq's transport minister, told Reuters it would be impossible to "sit idle while the Shi'ites are being attacked," while the United States and Western allies arm and finance the mainly Sunni rebels.
Spanish police arrested eight people on Friday in Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta on suspicion of recruiting fighters for a branch of al Qaeda in Syria.

Alleged murder and mob boss James ?Whitey? Bulger may be on alert to exclude photographs from evidence after prosecutors shocked jurors in June by giving them a slideshow of Bulger?s 19 alleged victims.
The prosecutors argued that Bulger was a ?hands-on killer? while showing photographs of the 17 men and two women that Bulger is accused of killing, reports ABC News.
In response to other photographs of victims being admitted into evidence, Bulger filed a motion to exclude on Tuesday, one that was denied by Judge Casper on Wednesday.
Photographs to Be Excluded
In his motion to exclude filed with the court on Tuesday, Bulger argued that photographs of murder victims Edward Connors and Francis Leonard.
Edward Connors, as a key prosecution witness testified on Tuesday, was the man who was gunned down in a telephone booth by Bulger in 1975, reports The Boston Globe.
Bulger's motion sought to exclude photographs of Leonard and Connors, particularly a photo labeled Exhibit 182, a close-up of Connors' dead body "crumpled at the bottom of the phone booth."
Danger of Prejudice
Balancing prejudice and probative value the Federal Rules of Evidence requires that probative value is substantially outweighed by the danger of unfair prejudice. The key here is "unfair" prejudice, as it is not in any murder's rights to not be confronted with the fruits of his crimes, and under U.S. v. Munoz, which Bulger's motion cites, "damage done to the defense is not a basis for exclusion."
As Jim Carrey's character found out in "Liar Liar", an objection "because it's devastating to my case" is not sufficient. Most photographs of crime scenes, even of the pile of corpses Bulger has allegedly left in his wake, could have enough probative value to survive the emotional effect that they have on juries.
Cumulative or No Probative Value
The infamous Bostonian also argued that presenting multiple photographs would be cumulative or duplicative evidence, resulting in no probative value for jurors and a waste of the court's time under Rule 403.
The First Circuit has given district judges wide discretion to exclude relevant evidence which is voluminous or cumulative, so much so that it would confuse the jury, but it is doubtful that three crime scene photos would confuse the jury more than one.
This is likely why Judge Casper denied Bulger's motion to exclude on Wednesday, allowing the photographs of the alleged murder victims to be presented.

Microsoft has announced it will remove DRM restrictions on?Xbox One?games and the need for you to have the Xbox One "always online".
Sources told?whathifi.com earlier today that Microsoft was set to announce the changes, with games developers being informed first.
A post on Xbox.com now confirms the changes: "An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games ? After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24-hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.
"Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today ? There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360."
The post by Don Mattrick, President, Interactive Entertainment Business, thanked people who posted "feedback" for their "assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One".?
The Xbox One was announced last week at E3 alongside the new PS4, with Sony's new PlayStation drawing first blood thanks to the higher Xbox One price and apparent restrictions surrounding games and offline play.
Microsoft announced that users would need to connect the Xbox One to the internet once every 24 hours in order to keep playing.?
DRM (digital rights management) would also seemingly restrict you from sharing Xbox One games with friends or indeed selling them on second-hand.?
Sony was quick to capitalise, changing the PS4 launch to poke fun at the Xbox One's perceived restrictive nature and highlighting the fact that there would be no such issues aroud the PS4 (even if PS4 games publishers' can seemingly still choose to add DRM).
It seems Microsoft has listened and has changed its mind on both DRM on Xbox One games and the always online requirement.?
Microsoft signed-off the announcement by thanking gamers for the "candid feedback", saying the Xbox team, "remained committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year."

The film is touching, filled with taste and care, but not enough to avoid being coy and sentimental.
On the surface, this indie does sound like standard-issue material, but its dynamics are far more complex than its simple exterior.
What Maisie Knew gives the audience a ground-eye view of its mesmerizing title character, a plucky, charismatic New Yorker who navigates downtown bars and building lobbies with the street savvy of a pro.
The result is a film that deeply engages us on multiple levels. Not only do we wonder what Maisie knows and how she knows it, we want to get this seedling to a place where she won't have to be transplanted every day.
It's a study of human nature, not at its worst, but at its most typically pathetic, and it goes to show that the more things don't change, the more they stay lousy.
Intimate, unnerving and entirely addictive.
This is a film that deals in subtle details, and its value lies in the way the filmmakers draw out small moments of surprise or truth from the familiar scenario.
It's far from the first story of a child dealing with the consequences of parental break-up -- but it may be one of the best.
The worthwhile subject matter becomes trivialized.
A wonderful modernized re-telling of the 1897 Henry James short story.
It's an intimate, well-acted and nuanced film that provides a fresh angle on an all-too-familiar struggle.
Onata Aprile is never showy and always authentic, a rare find in a child actor. In fact, she is one of the most self-possessed actors I've seen of any age.
A movie that's much easier to admire than to actually enjoy, no matter how well done or acted.
Onata Aprile's short career should blossom as people react to her subtle performance here.
Despite the big-name adults around her, it's the unknown Onata Aprile who is the star of this movie.
Gazing on Maisie, you want to know what she knows. That you can't is at once your dilemma and your opportunity, what adults must engage in order to be adults.
Despite a sensitive, mature performance from Onata Aprile as Maisie, the girl remains withdrawn and opaque throughout. In telling this sad story from her perspective, it never quite plugs in to what Maisie felt.

NEW YORK, NY (June 20, 2013)Researchers have found elevated antibodies to gluten proteins of wheat in children with autism in comparison to those without autism. The results also indicated an association between the elevated antibodies and the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms in the affected children. They did not find any connection, however, between the elevated antibodies and celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder known to be triggered by gluten. The results were e-published in the journal PLOS ONE.
Gluten, a group of more than 70 proteins in wheat and related grains, consists of gliadins and glutenins. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that negatively affects communication and social interaction. Although the mechanisms that cause autism are poorly understood, there is mounting evidence that the immune system plays a role in a subset of patients. In addition, autistic children commonly have gastrointestinal symptoms. In recent years, diets that exclude gluten have become increasingly popular in the autism community. The effectiveness of such diets, however, has not been confirmed in controlled and blinded studies.
The study, headed by Armin Alaedini, PhD, assistant professor of medical sciences (in the Department of Medicine and the Institute of Human Nutrition) at Columbia University Medical Center, looked at blood samples and medical records of 140 children. Thirty-seven of the children were diagnosed with autism and the rest were unaffected siblings or healthy control subjects. To increase diagnostic accuracy, only patients identified as having autism according to two well-recognized diagnostic instruments, the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule and the Autism Diagnostic Interview, Revised, were selected. The blood samples were tested for antibodies to tissue transglutaminase, a sensitive and specific marker of celiac disease, as well as antibodies to gliadin. The patients also were tested for genes encoding certain human leukocyte antigens, which are strongly associated with celiac disease.
"This is the first study to systematically look at serologic and genetic markers of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity in such well-characterized cohorts of autism patients and controls," said Peter H. R. Green, MD, director of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University Medical Center and one of the study authors. "But the findings need to be confirmed in larger cohorts."
The authors suggest that further research is needed to understand the relevance of the described antibodies in autism. "The IgG antibody response to gluten does not necessarily indicate sensitivity to gluten or any disease-causing role for the antibodies in the context of autism," said Dr. Alaedini. "But the higher levels of antibody to gluten and their association with gastrointestinal symptoms point to immunologic and/or intestinal permeability abnormalities in the affected children." Dr. Alaedini noted that a better understanding of the immune response to gluten may yield novel clues about autism or offer biomarkers to identify a subset of patients that would respond to certain treatment strategies.

One of the most crucial areas to consider with any type of home repairs, renovations or decorating is your budget. It?s essential that you figure out the estimated cost before you begin any work. Make sure you figure in the extreme likelihood that the actual finishing cost will be at least ten percent higher than the figure you first estimate. That?s simply the way it usually works. There will always be some unexpected reasons for a project to cost more than you think it will cost. You might need more materials than you had estimated, there might be mistakes that need to be corrected, you might find other problems to be addressed as well.
When you prepare for your home renovation project, you may be able to save money on materials and tools. You might be able to find the items you need at a lower price however you don?t want to concede to a lower quality. Recycle centers or places like Re-Stores sell new materials for nearly half the price of those sold in hardware or home improvement stores. You can greatly reduce your costs, while still using good quality materials, if you can find the things you need at these places. When it comes to tools, either locally or on the Internet, you can generally find used ones that are still in good shape.
In terms of DIY projects, flooring offers you more options than any other. There are several possibilities for putting in new floors that aren?t very expensive and that anyone can do. For instance, laminate wood floors are something that you should be able to install, even if you haven?t ever done anything like this before now. The pieces will snap together and there isn?t any need to do any surface refinishing. While it isn?t as sturdy as floors made from more expensive materials, this will offer your home a much better look, particularly where the floors are concerned. Vinyl is another fantastic flooring option and comes in all sorts of different colors and styles. Vinyl is super simple because the tiles will come with some self adhesive backing on them.
With all of the many plans for DIY projects around the home, there should be lots you can do. Some jobs will be costly and quite ambitious, while many will be inexpensive and simple. No matter what you plan to do, it?s essential to carefully consider what?s involved, including the costs, materials and any permits you might need. Giving your home a new look will be easier to figure out, when you are following these types of home improvement guidelines. Source: wreathpro. Also check out how to advertise on google.

June 17, 2013 ? Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) researchers have identified in the most aggressive forms of cancer a gene known to regulate embryonic stem cell self-renewal, beginning a creative search for a drug that can block its activity.
The gene, SALL4, gives stem cells their ability to continue dividing as stem cells rather than becoming mature cells. Typically, cells only express SALL4 during embryonic development, but the gene is re-expressed in nearly all cases of acute myeloid leukemia and 10 to 30 percent of liver, lung, gastric, ovarian, endometrial, and breast cancers, strongly suggesting it plays a role in tumor formation.
In work published in the New England Journal of Medicine, two HSCI-affiliated labs -- one in Singapore and the other in Boston -- show that knocking out the SALL4 gene in mouse liver tumors, or interfering with the activity of its protein product with a small inhibitor, treats the cancer.
"Our paper is about liver cancer, but it is likely true about lung cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, many, many cancers," said HSCI Blood Diseases Program leader Daniel Tenen, who also heads a laboratory at the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore (CSI Singapore). "SALL4 is a marker, so if we had a small molecule drug blocking SALL4 function, we could also predict which patients would be responsive."
Studying the therapeutic potential of a transcription factor is unusual in the field of cancer research. Transcription factors are typically avoided because of the difficulty of developing drugs that safely interfere with genetic targets. Most cancer researchers focus their attention on kinases.
The HSCI researchers' inquiry into the basic biology of the SALL4 gene, however, revealed another way to interfere with its activity in cancer cells. The gene's protein product is responsible for turning off a tumor-suppressor gene, causing the cell to divide uncontrollably. Using this knowledge, the researchers demonstrated that targeting the SALL4 protein with druglike molecules could halt tumor growth. "The pharmaceutical companies decided that if it is not a kinase and it is not a cell surface molecule, then it is 'undruggable,' " Tenen said. "To me, if you say anything is 'undoable,' you are limiting yourself as a biomedical scientist."
Earlier this year, Tenen's co-author, HSCI-affiliated faculty member Li Chai, a Harvard Medical School assistant professor of pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, published a paper in the journal Blood, reporting that a SALL4 inhibitor has similar treatment potential in leukemia cells.
Chai took blood samples from patients with acute myeloid leukemia, treated the leukemic cells with the inhibitor that interferes with SALL4 protein activity, and then transplanted the blood into mice. The result was a gradual regression of the same cancer in mice.
"I am excited about being on the front line of this new drug development," Chai said. "As a physician-scientist, if I can find a new class of drug that has very low toxicity to normal tissues, my patients can have a better quality of life."
Chai and Tenen are now working with HSCI Executive Committee member Lee Rubin, the Harvard Institute of Chemistry and Cell Biology, and James Bradner of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, another HSCI-affiliated faculty member, to overcome the technical challenges of drug development and demonstrate the potential of SALL4 interference to treat other forms of cancer.
"I think as academics, we seek to engage drug companies because they can do these types of things better than we can," Tenen said. "But, also as an academic, I want to go after the important biologic targets that are not being sought after by the typical drug company -- because if we do not, who will?"

Decades of scientific research have made clear that addiction is not a moral failing, a character flaw or a sign of weakness, but rather a chronic brain disease. Still, it typically falls under the umbrella of behavioral health. Some suggest that this classification is contributing to the stigma surrounding addiction. Is ?behavioral health? a stigmatizing term?
Viewing behavioral health as a stigmatizing term presupposes an overly narrow interpretation of the term. Behavioral health is a broad term that includes illnesses that can be addressed in whole or in part with changes in behavior. For example, a change in diet and exercise regimen may improve or eliminate health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Quitting smoking cigarettes can lessen the associated physical health consequences such as lung disease.
Behavioral health is often used interchangeably with mental health, though the terms are in many ways different. With mental health, the outcome of the diagnosis can?t change by making changes in behavior (for example, bipolar disorder). Behavioral health, by contrast, is a term that brings hope to addicts and their families. Addiction is a brain disease, but there?s much addicts can do to improve the biological hand they?ve been dealt. Addiction is not a choice, but people suffering with addiction can choose to get help and take steps to manage their illness.
Since the 1970s, behavioral health has become almost a philosophy of health that empowers people to make changes that improve their mental, emotional and physical well-being. This can include treatments designed to affect neurobiology, such as medication, but medication alone does not fully address addiction.
Behavioral interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing and relapse prevention, are a critical part of treatment and long-term recovery. Addicts must learn how to cope with cravings and triggers to use and develop healthier coping skills and communication strategies to improve their relationships with people in their social support network. They learn the importance of self-care and stress management. Even though addiction is a brain disease, many of the most effective treatment approaches are behavioral.
Addiction affects all aspects of life ? social, emotional, physical, financial and spiritual. Nothing about our health occurs in a vacuum. Biology and environment interact. Mental health impacts physical health, and vice versa. Behavioral health care addresses all of these complex issues in an integrated way.
It isn?t a simple question of brain or behavior. It is both. Addiction is a primary brain disease that drives behaviors, such as cravings and drug-seeking. Judgment, decision-making and learning are affected by changes in the brain circuitry caused by prolonged drug use. These behaviors don?t cause addiction but are manifestations of the disease. Regardless of which came first, there are both biological and behavioral components that must be addressed in treating addiction.
Saying addiction is one thing ? a chronic brain disease ? does not exclude the other ? a behavioral issue. That?s the beauty of the term behavioral health. It?s broad enough to include both and paints a realistic portrait of the struggles facing people in active addiction and those on the road to recovery.
Unfortunately, the stigma attached to addiction seems to persist regardless of whether the disease is classified as a behavioral health problem, a mental health disorder or something else. While the appropriate labels can be debated, one fact is clear: Addiction is a chronic brain disease that impacts every area of a person?s life and requires comprehensive, long-term treatment that addresses both brains and behaviors.

HBO
Tara, Sookie and Nora escape Bill -- or is it Billith? -- on "True Blood."
The wait is finally over! On Sunday night, HBO's "True Blood" returned and picked up the plot right where it left off last summer.
For those who don't remember, that means just moments after Bill drank the remaining drops of Lilith's holy blood, he rose again as ... well, whatever his is now.
Behold Billith
According to Jason, he's a "evil-monster-vampire-god thing." The truth is, even Bill's not sure.
"I am Bill Compton, though clearly, I am something more," he told Eric's sister Nora right after she, Eric and Sookie attempted to kill him.
And props to Sookie, who actually managed to drive a stake through his heart -- not that it did any good. Surviving that is just one of his many new powers, along with flying and a gruesome sort of telekinesis. Oh, and the power to talk Jessica into standing by his side even though he's obviously bad news.
Home, sweet home
While one of Sookie's exes was busy creeping everyone out, her other ex was being a standup vamp.
After seeing her home safe and sound, Eric transferred ownership of the Stackhouse family home back to Sookie. How did she thank him for the good deed (and the actual deed)? She rescinded his invitation.
Good luck when you need saving next time, Sooks!
Goodnight, Luna
Fans who thought Sam's shifter gal-pal Luna died at the end of last season were wrong. As it turned out, the best Steve Newlin impersonator in Bon Temps still had enough life in her to tell Sam to grab her little wolf and run.
Here's betting a certain wolf pack will have something to say about that temporary custody arraignment.
Vampires and shifters and werewolves ? oh, ew!
Speaking of them, Alcide and the gang decided to honor their outgoing pack master by chowing down on his mortal remains.
After Alcide -- aka the new pack master -- enjoyed a bit of forearm, he moved on to serious wolf business, which evidently includes getting naked, running around and getting it on with anyone -- new girl, girlfriend, both ... whatever.
Don't take rides from strangers
Jason hitched a ride with a mystery man and proceeded to tell him all his woes, including the bit about how he's spending a lot of quality time with his long-deceased parents.
That led to second most memorable lines of the night: "I feel like that little gay boy from that movie 'I See Dead People.' "
(Lafayette took top honors when he called Luna's Newlin broadcast "the sickest (expletive) I've seen on TV -- and I watch 'Dance Moms!' ")
Sookie's brother went on to blab all about Warlow. That's when he realized the downside of getting into a strange car with a strange man on a strange night in Bon Temps.
"Who the hell do you think I am, Jason?" the man behind the wheel asked just before pulling a vanishing act.
What did you think of the season premiere? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
