Bangladesh united in grief over a failed rescue from collapsed factory

Many hundreds have been rescued so far. But a fire broke out today amid the rubble of the collapsed building, ending hopes of saving a known survivor named Shahinur.

She was the last person located and known to still be alive inside a garment factory building that collapsed last week in Bangladesh. But before rescuers could save Shahinur, who went by only one name, a fire broke out in the rubble today and the woman who captured the attention of the nation perished. The death toll now stands at 378.

Bangladesh is passing through one of its gloomiest national moments. Civilians extending help in the rescue effort were anxiously looking forward to Shahinur?s rescue, as were those away from the site, who remained glued to television and mobile phones.

Firefighters made three foxholes in the area where Shahinur was stuck and almost managed to get her out. In the meantime, public hope for her rescue led the army to hold off on its plans this morning to start using heavy equipment to clear more of the rubble, according to Masudur Rahman Akand, a deputy assistant director of the Fire Service and Civil Defense.

When the fire broke out, the failure brought tears to the eyes of many. With the fourth day of search and rescue coming to a close, victims are reluctant to give up hope, and a nation remains, for a time, united in grief and anger.?

According to information provided by relatives of those who worked in the factories, about 761 persons are still missing. A security guard rescued last night has said that a person on the seventh floor of the squeezed building was still alive.

?There could be few more people still surviving inside the wreckage,? says a local journalist present at the site.

However, preparations are underway to begin the second phase of recovery by using cranes and other heavy equipment. ?According to our estimates possibly there is no more persons alive,? says a lieutenant colonel with the Bangladesh Army. ?With [only] light equipment we cannot remove all the rubble.?

The rescue efforts have transfixed Bangladeshis, overshadowing the Shahbag protests that began in February to insist on tough punishments for Islamist leaders who committed war crimes during the 1971 war for independence. The protests spawned a broader secular movement, and touched off political tensions about the role of Islam in politics.?

For now, those tensions have receded. Bangladeshis from all walks of life, besides extending their support to the rescue efforts, are largely united in calling for the maximum punishment for the owner of the building and the factory owners ??for what many call a ?mass murder.?

Despite instructions to keep the building closed on Tuesday after an inspection team comprising of engineers identified cracks, the building owner kept it open. Factory owners threatened they would dock workers' pay unless they went to work.

Bangladesh?s elite crime busting agency Rapid Action Battalion on Sunday arrested Sohel Rana, owner of Rana Plaza ? the eight-story commercial complex ? that housed five factories, a few shops, and a private bank. Mr. Rana was arrested from Benapole, one of the border crossings Bangladesh shares with India.?

?All agencies were alerted about Rana. We were finally able to arrest him,? said Mukhlesur Rahman, director general of the Rapid Action Battalion. He had traveled to more than one district in the last four days, he added.?

Bangladesh police have also arrested four of the owners of the five factories: Mahmudur Rahman Tapas of New Wave Bottoms, Bazlus Samad Adnan of New Wave Styles, Aminul Islam of Phantom Apparels and Phantom Tac Limited, and Anisur Rahman of Ether Tex.

Yet political disagreements are already on the horizon. Bangladesh?s right-wing opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called for a countrywide shutdown on May 2, protesting the deaths at Savar.

A BNP official noted that the day of the factory collapse, the party had called for a nationwide general strike, or hartal, on unrelated matters. Abdul Moyeen Khan, standing committee member of the BNP, implied that workers in the cracked building were forced to come to work in a political bid to prove that people defied the hartal.?

?Work was called off the day cracks were identified. What turned so important for the workers to gather during a?hartal?? he said.?You must have noticed that several survivors said that they were threatened that their pay will be docked.?

The government is now faced with trying to manage anger from a second major factory disaster within the past half year. In November, a fire broke out in a factory on the outskirts of the capital, killing more than 100 people.

So far, the government has highlighted the rescue efforts as a major success, with as many as 2,400 rescued. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said: ?This has perhaps never happened in the history that so many lives were rescued after such a disaster.?

Speed of Light May Not Be Constant, Phycisists Say

The speed of light is constant, or so textbooks say. But some scientists are exploring the possibility that this cosmic speed limit changes, a consequence of the nature of the vacuum of space.

The definition of the speed of light has some broader implications for fields such as cosmology and astronomy, which assume a stable velocity for light over time. For instance, the speed of light comes up when measuring the fine structure constant (alpha), which defines the strength of the electromagnetic force. And a varying light speed would change the strengths of molecular bonds and the density of nuclear matter itself.

A non-constant speed of light could mean that estimates of the size of the universe might be off. (Unfortunately, it won't necessarily mean we can travel faster than light, because the effects of physics theories such as relativity are a consequence of light's velocity). Two papers, published in the European Physics Journal D in March, attempt to derive the speed of light from the quantum properties of space itself. Both propose somewhat different mechanisms, but the idea is that the speed of light might change as one alters assumptions about how elementary particles interact with radiation. Both treat space as something that isn't empty, but a great big soup of virtual particles that wink in and out of existence in tiny fractions of a second.

Cosmic vacuum and light speed

The first, by lead author Marcel Urban of the Universit? du Paris-Sud, looks at the cosmic vacuum, which is often assumed to be empty space. The laws of quantum physics, which govern subatomic particles and all things very small, ?say that the vacuum of space is actually full of fundamental particles like quarks, called "virtual" particles. These matter particles, which are always paired up with their appropriate antiparticle counterpart, pop into existence and almost immediately collide. When matter and antimatter particles touch, they annihilate each other.

Photons of light, as they fly through space, are captured and re-emitted by these virtual particles. Urban and his colleagues propose that the energies of these particles ? specifically the amount of charge they carry ? affect the speed of light. Since the amount of energy a particle will have at the time a photon hits it will be essentially random, the effect on how fast photons move should vary too.

As such, the amount of time the light takes to cross a given distance should vary as the square root of that distance, though the effect would be very tiny ? on the order of 0.05 femtoseconds for every square meter of vacuum. A femtosecond is a millionth of a billionth of a second. (The speed of light has been measured over the last century to high precision, on the order of parts per billion, so it is pretty clear that the effect has to be small.)

To find this tiny fluctuation, the researchers say, one could measure how light disperses at long distances. Some astronomical phenomena, such as gamma-ray bursts, produce pulses of radiation from far enough away that the fluctuations could be detected. The authors also propose using lasers bounced between mirrors placed about 100 yards apart, with a light beam bouncing between them multiple times, to seek those small changes.

Particle species and light speed

The second paper proposes a different mechanism but comes to the same conclusion that light speed changes. In that case, Gerd Leuchs and Luis S?nchez-Soto, from the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Light in Erlangen, Germany, say that the number of species of elementary particle that exist in the universe may be what makes the speed of light what it is.

Leuchs and Sanchez-Soto say that there should be, by their calculations, on the order of 100 "species" of particle that have charges. The current law governing particle physics, the Standard Model, identifies nine: the electron, muon, tauon, the six kinds of quark, photons and the W-boson. The charges of all these particles are important to their model, because all of them have charges. A quantity called impedance depends on the sum of those charges. The impedance in turn depends on the permittivity of the vacuum, or how much it resists electric fields, as well as its permeability, or how well it supports magnetic fields. Light waves are made up of both an electric and magnetic wave, so changing those quantities (permittivity and permeability) will change the measured speed of light.

"We have calculated the permittivity and permeability of the vacuum as caused by those ephemeral virtual unstable elementary particles," Soto-Sanchez wrote in an email to LiveScience. "It turns out, however,?from such a simple model one can discern?that those constants contain essentially equal contributions of the different types of electrically charged particle-antiparticle pairs: both, the ones known and those so far unknown to us."

Both papers say that light interacts with virtual particle-antiparticle pairs. In Leuchs' and Sanchez-Soto's model, the impedance of the vacuum (which would speed up or slow down the speed of light) depends on the density of the particles. The impedance relates to the ratio of electric fields to magnetic fields in light; every light wave is made up of both kinds of field, and its measured value, along with the permittivity of space to magnetic fields, governs the speed of light.

Some scientists are a bit skeptical, though. Jay Wacker, a particle physicist at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, said he wasn't confident about the mathematical techniques used, and that it seemed in both cases the scientists weren't applying the mathematical tools in the way that most would. "The proper way to do this is with the Feynman diagrams," Wacker said. "It's a very interesting question [the speed of light]," he added, but the methods used in these papers are probably not sufficient to investigate it.

The other issue is that if there really are a lot of other particles beyond what's in the Standard Model, then this theory needs some serious revision. But so far its predictions have been borne out, notably with the discovery of the Higgs boson. This doesn't mean there aren't any more particles to be found ? but if they are out there they're above the energies currently achievable with particle accelerators, and therefore pretty heavy, and it's possible that their effects would have shown up elsewhere.

Kids Like Bugs: entomology outreach in elementary schools (Part 2 ...

? ? ?On Wednesday, Chris Buddle and Paul Manning posted the first of a two-part series on outreach activities in elementary schools. That post focused on the ?why? - this one (also written by Chris and Paul) is about the ?how?.

How to talk to kids about bugs:

First thing about talking to elementary school kids is stay calm and don?t worry! ?If you have any University-level training in Entomology, you are qualified ? Now, this doesn?t mean you have to be able to speak about all aspects of entomology: play to your strengths! If you are a taxonomists working on Syrphidae flies, bring in your flies and talk about them these magnificent animals.? If your experience is broader and less specialized, browse some notes, look on-line, or peek at a textbook: do a short overview of the main Orders of insects and their characteristics. Although most kids get some entomology in elementary schools, it?s not usually very much (although ALL kids do seem to learn about monarch butterflies!).

One great way to speak to kids about bugs is to make the session thematic.? In addition to bringing in a drawer or two of insects, link the specimens to biology. For example, one of us (Paul) has recently used ?metamorphosis? as a focal point for discussion. The transition from larvae to adult is a biological wonder, and acts as an excellent focal point for discussion. It brings together different facets of biology, from hormones, to physiological development, behavioural adaptations, through to discussion about life history strategies. ?Paul brought galls into the classroom, and demonstrated that there were larvae living inside. The students screamed with excitement when they saw the larvae living within the gall. One student described it as a ?cute white blob?. Several students asked if they could bring the larvae home (wouldn?t Mom and Dad just LOVE that!).

Kids like bugs. And they like to draw them.

Don?t be afraid to say ?I don?t know?.? In fact, kids find it refreshing to hear that an ?expert? doesn?t know all the answers.? Turn it around to illustrate that the world of entomology is so vast that there are a lot of unknowns out there, and many questions still to be answered.

Have patience. With younger grades, asking kids questions, or having them answer questions, can quickly turn into ?stories? from young, enthusiastic students. For example:

Q: Does anyone know what kind of insect a ladybug is?

? ? ? ? [Hand shoots into the air...]

?A (from a 6 year old): Um, yes, I know a lot about those things.? Once, when I was 4, I remember that I saw a beautiful bug flying by my garden ? it was really big and black and I think it was a ladybug and my granddad told me about how ones like that eat trees and kill the trees and that makes me sad because we have a big tree in our front yard that I really like but sometimes my little bratty brother hides behind it and scares me when I am walking by. But I really like all bugs especially ladybug ones that are red but they smell funny sometimes and my mom said they can bite ? will they bite me if I play with them? why do they smell funny? why are there so many spots on them? do their spots get bigger when they grow?.

Give kids a chance to tell you these stories, but know that it will take patience?. but heck, if bugs get them talking and excited, that can?t be a bad thing!

(as an aside, most elementary school teachers will typically coach students so that they will ask/answer question instead of tell stories)

Bring a few props: If you can do an event outdoors, try to bring a few sweep nets and vials.? We will often bring extra vials from the lab and give students the vials to keep (heck, plastic vials cost very little!). For MONTHS afterwards, parents will often tell us about how their child packed that vial full of insects and carried it around obsessively for weeks. That?s a great way to inspire entomology.

Beetle galleries are easily found in wood, and can be a great prop to bring to an entomology session with school kids.

If you are doing an indoor talk, make sure to have a lot of photographs of interesting insects, and whenever possible, discuss/show or use examples from your local fauna ? this will allow kids to connect to things they have seen on the playground or in their own yards ? this connection between the content you are discussing and the insects they are seeing on their own, is very powerful.? With a smaller group, you can certainly bring in a few drawers of insects ? if you don?t have any, this becomes a great excuse to make a little synoptic collection of your own to use for educational purposes. Or, ask your local entomology museum, or local naturalist club, about borrowing some specimens.

Whenever possible, bring a few ?real? field guides. One of us (CB) ran a biodiversity challenge at an elementary school and managed to convince the school to buy a couple of sets of field guides. The kids LOVE the look and feel of real field guides and will thumb through them with delight. Part of our own passion about natural history can be traced back to field guides in our houses when we were young.

Don?t dumb down the material: Too often we think kids need to be talked down to, but nothing is further from the truth. As mentioned above, kids are sponges for information and in our experience they want to hear the details. You will want to avoid jargon, but other than that, provide the details whenever you can. Again, doing a ?thematic? talk with school kids becomes quite important because you just won?t have time to cover anything in-depth if you try to cover too much.

Finally, and most importantly, be passionate and enthusiastic. Kids will feel your positive energy and love of entomology; they will feed off of this, take it home with them; they will start asking more questions, start to dream, and fall further in love with the world around them. Spending a bit of time in a classroom is perhaps one of the most important kinds of outreach activities to do.

Gaga's a godmother -- again! Sir Elton John and husband David Furnish were so impressed with Lady Gaga's guidance as a godmother to their son Zachary, 2, that they asked for an encore performance when they welcomed son Elijah, 3 months, in January. Speaking to "Extra" on Thursday, April 25, about life with their children, the "I'm Still Standing" singer, 65, and Furnish, 50, gushed that Gaga is the perfect choice to help their kids navigate life, love, and showbiz.

"She's a great role model, she's young, (and) she's been a great godmother to Zachary," John said of the "Born This Way" singer. "We're all bonkers in this business, but we're human beings at the same time."

The legendary musician, married to longtime partner Furnish since 2005, expressed a similar sentiment back in 2011, when he first confirmed rumors that the pop star was Zachary's godmother. "There's a real simple person under there who loves her parents," he explained to Barbara Walters.

Added Furnish: "Zachary's going to inherit an incredible musical legacy from his father one day, and she will be a good person to guide him through the ins and outs of the music business, 'cause she sure knows everything about the business now."

The proud parents also spoke to "Extra" about how their lives have changed since the birth of their kids (via surrogate). "You learn so much about yourself and about life by seeing children," Furnish said.

One of the biggest differences in the couple's post-baby existence is their definition of fun. "I love getting up in the morning and having breakfast with Zachary," John raved, adding that he and his sons have a 6:30 "tubby time" ritual. "Everything I thought I would find annoying about having children, like screaming and shouting and tantrums.... I don't find any of it annoying. I find it all enchanting."

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? The idea behind the Tampa Women's Club charity event was simple. For $20, you could buy a flute of champagne and a chance to win a one-carat, $5,000 diamond.

Organizers of the Saturday event placed $10 cubic zirconia stones in the bottom of 399 of the 400 champagne glasses. The prized diamond, donated by Continental Wholesale Diamonds, was placed in the last.

The problem? Eighty-year-old Miriam Tucker accidentally swallowed it.

Tucker told local news media that she didn't want to put her finger in the champagne, so she drank a bit. While laughing with women at the table, she realized she swallowed it.

Embarrassed, she had to tell jewelers who were frantically searching for the winner.

Already scheduled for a colonoscopy on Monday, she had a doctor recover the jewel.

In 2012, Business Insider had revenues of only $10 million (up from 2011, when it reported a profit of, no joke, $2,127). And though eight figures in revenue is still a lot, consider that BI has more than 24 million unique visitors per month.

By comparison, in 2012, The New York Times company had revenues of nearly $2 billion. For all the talk of the death of the newspaper, you could take all the annual revenues of most of the big blogging empires combined, subtract them from the Times?s income statements and the paper might have to tell Wall Street that it had a bad quarter.

The point is this: the blogging model of ?Oh, we?ll just get as many page views as possible and then profit? clearly hasn?t worked out. Like, at all.

For those of you who are only peripherally involved in the media business, the death of the page-views-as-profit model is why you?re beginning to see a lot of chatter about a new form of advertising called native ads. Since the market is flooded with more inventory than could ever possibly be purchased, CPMs (the amount advertisers pay per thousand impressions) have been driven essentially to zero. Now, desperate to generate cash, blogs have to create new kinds of inventory.

Some sites call it ?native advertising.? Some call it ?sponsored posts.? Some call it ?advertorial.? But regardless of the name, it?s based on short-term thinking and built almost exclusively on industry hype. It?s not a long-term strategy; it?s just a way to juice dumb media buyers for cash?or in other cases, to create just enough semblance of a business model to convince dumb brands to acquire them.

To back up for a second, think about how the fashion business works: a designer creates a couture or high-end fashion brand that is highly sought-
after (it could be Gucci or it could be Ecko Unltd.). The first phase of growth comes from selling a product directly to customers or to retailers like department stores. Then investors see an opportunity and swoop in to ?license? this brand. The next thing you know, there is a sunglasses line in China, a home decor line at Macy?s or Kmart, or even an Eddie Bauer-style car edition.

If the brand is strong, it can withstand this dilution (think: Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein); if it isn?t, it quickly booms and then busts (think: FUBU). The problem comes when weak brands attempt to squeeze too much money out of their business by licensing too much too quickly.

And that?s what we?re seeing online right now.

For the last few years, sites like the Huffington Post, Gawker, Business Insider, The Atlantic, Politico, AOL and others (including Betabeat, to some extent) have directed all their efforts at increasing page views at the expense of the reputation of their brand (see: crappy slide shows, wild speculation, worthless gossip and untrained writers). Now they?re suddenly trying to leverage that ?brand? to develop other revenue sources.

And they?re hoping that advertisers and investors will be dumb enough to go along with it.

On one end of the spectrum, we have our old media brands that rushed to the web.

Take the naked greed of a site like Forbes.com. In Forbes, we have a 100-year-old media brand that has spent the last few years opening up its platform to literally any ?contributor? who wanted to post there?and, in fact, paying many of these writers per page view generated. As a result, the site?s traffic has doubled since 2010?blowing past sites like Bloomberg.com and Businessweek.

But at what cost? Is Forbes.com the same as Forbes the magazine? Certainly the Forbes family never would have published articles like ?Top 10 Best Horror Movies Of The Last 2 Years,? ?6 Ways to Burn Your Belly Fat Fast,? ?Do I Buy Apple On Monday?? and ?Glenn Beck Just Doesn?t Get America?s Strong Character? (all abysmal pieces currently atop its most-read list). And yet Forbes.com turns around and tries to sell editorial privileges to advertisers for $75,000 a month.

Think about the insanity of that position. Essentially any writer can publish on Forbes.com (I currently know at least 10 different writers who do so, and I have done so myself), making it no different from any other free blog network, yet Forbes maintains that it?s a premium brand that other brands should pay to be featured on. Do you know who would buy that? An idiot.

Or take The Atlantic and its traffic-trolling sister, TheAtlanticWire.com. Here we have another venerable media brand that publishes all sorts of link-baity stories designed solely to generate traffic. When one reads a story on TheAtlantic.com or TheAtlanticWire.com, you?re not getting the same magazine for which Mark Twain once wrote, you?re getting the same stuff you can find on any blog (with the exception of Ta-Nehisi Coates, of course, who is amazing). For instance, over the weekend, as I spent time thinking about and working on this column, AtlanticWire blogger Connor Simpson churned out 13 posts in two days. That is quantity over quality embodied.

And yet The Atlantic turns around and sells ?sponsor content? to advertisers, whose main appeal is that readers hardly notice the difference between editorial and advertising content. Why would you even want to trick people into thinking your ad was produced by one of these quantity-over-quality bloggers? (The Observer also sells sponsored content on Observer.com.)

On the other end of the spectrum are sites like Business Insider and Gawker, which are licensing their names in foreign countries. In 2013, both announced separate deals with The Times of India to create versions of their sites in India. Gawker already has similar deals in Brazil, the U.K,. Japan and Hungary.

Apr. 24, 2013 ? In a paper to be published in an upcoming issue of Energy & Environmental Science, researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory describe details of a low-cost, stable, effective catalyst that could replace costly platinum in the production of hydrogen. The catalyst, made from renewable soybeans and abundant molybdenum metal, produces hydrogen in an environmentally friendly, cost-effective manner, potentially increasing the use of this clean energy source.

The research has already garnered widespread recognition for Shilpa and Shweta Iyer, twin-sister high school students who contributed to the research as part of an internship under the guidance of Brookhaven chemist Wei-Fu Chen, supported by projects led by James Muckerman, Etsuko Fujita, and Kotaro Sasaki.

"This paper reports the 'hard science' from what started as the Iyer twins' research project and has resulted in the best-performing, non-noble-metal-containing hydrogen evolution catalyst yet known -- even better than bulk platinum metal," Muckerman said.

The project branches off from the Brookhaven group's research into using sunlight to develop alternative fuels. Their ultimate goal is to find ways to use solar energy -- either directly or via electricity generated by solar cells -- to convert the end products of hydrocarbon combustion, water and carbon dioxide, back into a carbon-based fuel. Dubbed "artificial photosynthesis," this process mimics how plants convert those same ingredients to energy in the form of sugars. One key step is splitting water, or water electrolysis.

"By splitting liquid water (H₂O) into hydrogen and oxygen, the hydrogen can be regenerated as a gas (H₂) and used directly as fuel," Sasaki explained. "We sought to fabricate a commercially viable catalyst from earth-abundant materials for application in water electrolysis, and the outcome is indeed superb."

This form of hydrogen production could help the scientists achieve their ultimate goal.

"A very promising route to making a carbon-containing fuel is to hydrogenate carbon dioxide (or carbon monoxide) using solar-produced hydrogen," said Fujita, who leads the artificial photosynthesis group in the Brookhaven Chemistry Department.

But with platinum as the main ingredient in the most effective water-splitting catalysts, the process is currently too costly to be economically viable.

Comsewogue High School students Shweta and Shilpa Iyer entered the lab as the search for a cost-effective replacement was on.

The Brookhaven team had already identified some promising leads with experiments demonstrating the potential effectiveness of low-cost molybdenum paired with carbon, as well as the use of nitrogen to confer some resistance to the corrosive, acidic environment required in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis cells. But these two approaches had not yet been tried together.

The students set out to identify plentiful and inexpensive sources of carbon and nitrogen, and test ways to combine them with a molybdenum salt.

"The students became excited about using familiar materials from their everyday lives to meet a real-world energy challenge," Chen recounted. The team tested a wide variety of sources of biomass -- leaves, stems, flowers, seeds, and legumes -- with particular interest in those with high protein content because the amino acids that make up proteins are a rich source of nitrogen. High-protein soybeans turned out to be the best.

To make the catalyst the team ground the soybeans into a powder, mixed the powder with ammonium molybdate in water, then dried and heated the samples in the presence of inert argon gas. "A subsequent high temperature treatment (carburization) induced a reaction between molybdenum and the carbon and nitrogen components of the soybeans to produce molybdenum carbides and molybdenum nitrides," Chen explained. "The process is simple, economical, and environmentally friendly."

Electrochemical tests of the separate ingredients showed that molybdenum carbide is effective for converting H₂O to H₂, but not stable in acidic solution, while molybdenum nitride is corrosion-resistant but not efficient for hydrogen production. A nanostructured hybrid of these two materials, however, remained active and stable even after 500 hours of testing in a highly acidic environment.

"We attribute the high activity of the molybdenum-soy catalyst (MoSoy) to the synergistic effect between the molybdenum-carbide phase and the molybdenum-nitride phase in the composite material," Chen said.

Structural and chemical studies of the new catalyst conducted at Brookhaven's National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) are also reported in the paper, and provide further details underlying the high performance of this new catalyst.

"The presence of nitrogen and carbon atoms in the vicinity of the catalytic molybdenum center facilitates the production of hydrogen from water," Muckerman said.

The scientists also tested the MoSoy catalyst anchored on sheets of graphene -- an approach that has proven effective for enhancing catalyst performance in electrochemical devices such as batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, and water electrolyzers. Using a high-resolution transmission microscope in Brookhven's Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Department, the scientists were able to observe the anchored MoSoy nanocrystals on 2D graphene sheets.

The graphene-anchored MoSoy catalyst surpassed the performance of pure platinum metal. Though not quite as active as commercially available platinum catalysts, the high performance of graphene-anchored MoSoy was extremely encouraging to the scientific team.

"The direct growth of anchored MoSoy nanocrystals on graphene sheets may enhance the formation of strongly coupled hybrid materials with intimate, seamless electron transfer pathways, thus accelerating the electron transfer rate for the chemical desorption of hydrogen from the catalyst, further reducing the energy required for the reaction to take place," Sasaki said.

The scientists are conducting additional studies to gain a deeper understanding of the nature of the interaction at the catalyst-graphene interface, and exploring ways to further improve its performance.

In the paper, the authors -- including the two high-school students -- conclude: "This study unambiguously provides evidence that a cheap and earth-abundant transition metal such as molybdenum can be turned into an active catalyst by the controlled solid-state reaction with soybeans?The preparation of the MoSoy catalyst is simple and can be easily scaled up. Its long-term durability and ultra-low capital cost satisfy the prerequisites for its application in the construction of large-scale devices. These findings thus open up new prospects for combining inexpensive biomass and transition metals?to produce catalysts for electro-catalytic reactions."

Additional collaborators in this research were Chiu-Hui Wang and Yimei Zhu of Brookhaven Lab.

Asian shares rise on firm U.S. earnings, soft money outlook

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares advanced on Wednesday, tracking global equities higher on the back of solid U.S. earnings, but the euro was pressured by soft German data tipping a possible rate cut to support the fragile euro zone economy.

European equities will likely remain underpinned by this expectation of further monetary easing, and European stock markets are seen rising. Financial spreadbetters predict London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> will open up to 0.3 percent higher. <.l><.eu/>

U.S. stock futures were up 0.1 percent to hint at a steady Wall Street open. <.n/>

Japanese stocks led the gains in Asian bourses, supported by bullish U.S. earnings and a pause in the yen's rise, with the Nikkei stock average <.n225> hitting its highest since June 2008. <.t/>

"I still think U.S., global money is still underweight Japan. They haven't corrected that just yet," a senior dealer at a foreign bank in Tokyo said, adding that he had two buy orders for every sell order.

The tone in global equities markets was generally positive despite several sluggish manufacturing surveys around the world, reflecting investor views that weak economic data justifies central banks maintaining monetary stimulus -- encouraging investment in shares.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> climbed 1.1 percent, led by a 1.5 percent gain in Australian shares <.axjo> as benign inflation data strengthened the case for more local interest rate cuts.

Australia's first-quarter core consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.3 percent on-quarter, below a 0.5 percent rise forecast in a Reuters poll, narrowing the odds of interest rate cuts from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA).

"With such a reading coming out there's definitely talk of room for further rate cuts. Whether or not the RBA will pull the trigger, it certainly seems that inflation is well under control," said Stan Shamu, market strategist at IG Markets.

After the bell on Wall Street, Apple shares rose, with the company reporting better-than-expected second-quarter revenue of $43.6 billion.

According to Westpac bank, 72.8 percent of the 147 Standard & Poor's 500 companies reporting so far have beaten consensus earnings.

Asian bourses also turned their attention to local earnings.

Seoul shares <.ks11> were up 0.8 percent after rising to a one-week high on Wednesday after chipmaker SK Hynix reported quarterly operating profits that handily beat forecasts, but the upside was curbed ahead of more earnings being published.

GROWTH WORRY CAPS EURO

The euro was around $1.2995, managing to recover from Tuesday's two-week low of $1.2973 hit after a survey showed Germany, the euro zone's largest economy, saw business activity decline in April for the first time in five months. Traders saw it as strengthening the case for the European Central Bank to cut interest rates.

The upside for the euro was limited, given the potential for an ECB rate cut and lingering concerns about the growth outlook in the recession-hit euro-zone.

The dollar was down 0.1 percent at 99.35 yen, struggling to break above the key 100-yen mark due to weak U.S. economic reports, but traders say the upcoming Bank of Japan meeting on Friday may provide an opportunity to clear that symbolic level.

Commodities were also capped by concerns about slowing demand. Investors will be eyeing U.S. durable goods orders data and the German IFO index due later in the session for further clues on the state of the global economy.

Brent crude rose 0.3 percent to $100.64 a barrel, holding above $100 by fears that OPEC could cut oil supply if prices fall more, although data from major economies pointing to slower growth and fuel demand capped gains. U.S. crude rose 0.5 percent to $89.66.

London copper climbed 1.5 percent to $6,970 a tonne as brighter corporate earnings sparked a rush of short-covering, but prices held close to one-and-a-half year lows after a string of weak manufacturing data hurt the demand outlook.

"PMI data yesterday wasn't as good as people expected and so metals have taken some pressure from that," said Bonnie Liu, an analyst with Macquarie in Shanghai.

First West Bank marathon highlights barriers to Palestinian movement

Marathoners observed a moment of silence for the victims in the Boston attacks before running a landscape scarred by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.?

Even as last week?s fatal bombing at the Boston Marathon suddenly robbed the popular events of their innocence in the US, the spirit of the newest marathon seemed little dampened as runners warmed up to drum-driven Middle Eastern folk music. But as the worldwide trend of marathoning spreads to the Holy Land, the Bethlehem Marathon has inevitably been routed through the charged terrain of geopolitical and religious conflict.

Dubbed the "Right to Movement Palestine Marathon," event organizers cast the run as a demonstration against the Israeli security policies that limit Palestinian travel between their cities and towns.

From the start line outside of the Church of the Nativity (the site of a weeks-long standoff in 2002 between Palestinian militants and the Israeli military), the race led runners to the controversial concrete separation wall erected in the wake of the Palestinian uprising of the last decade, and then on past crowded neighborhoods populated by Palestinian refugees. ?

"It sends a message of solidarity with the Palestinian people," SAYS/SAID? Jibril Rajoub, the head of the Palestinian Olympic Committee and the former head of Palestinian security forces in the West Bank. "It sends a message to the Israelis to recharge their mental batteries and reconsider their policies and start recognizing facts on the ground. It shows the Palestinian people THEY? are not alone."

That said, the message of the Bethlehem marathon went beyond Israeli-Palestinan conflict to touch on the Palestinians? own internal divisions. Several weeks ago, the United Nations organizers of the Gaza Strip marathon called off what would have been the third annual race there because the Hamas government banned women from participating ? giving the Bethlehem event added significance.

While Palestinian officials preferred to focus criticism on Israel and the military?s refusal to allow Gazan runners to travel to the West Bank for the Bethlehem race, female runners and spectators acknowledged the friction between the Western tradition of mass amateur races and the social sensibilities of conservative Islam.

DENVER (AP) ? Authorities are hunting for suspects after shooting broke out during a massive marijuana celebration in Denver, leaving two people with gunshot wounds.

The gunfire scattered thousands attending Saturday's 4/20 counterculture holiday, the first since Colorado legalized marijuana.

A man and a woman each suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds, officials said. Local media reports said a third person was grazed.

Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said investigators are looking for one or two suspects, asking festival attendees for possible photo or video of the shootings.

He said police had no motive for the gunfire.

Witnesses described a scene in which a jovial atmosphere quickly turned to one of panic at the downtown Civic Center Park just before 5 p.m. Several thought firecrackers were being set off, then a man fell bleeding, his dog also shot.

"I saw him fall, grabbing his leg," said Travis Craig, 28, who was at the celebration, saw the shooting and said he used a belt to apply a tourniquet to the man's leg.

"He was just screaming that he was in pain, and wanted to know where his girlfriend was. She was OK. And then the cops showed up real quick, like, less than a minute. They put him on ambulance and left."

The annual pot celebration this year was expected to draw as many as 80,000 people after recent laws in Colorado and Washington made marijuana legal for recreational use.

A sizable police force on motorcycles and horses had been watching the celebration since its start earlier Saturday. But authorities, who generally look the other way at public pot smoking here on April 20, didn't arrest people for smoking in public, which is still illegal.

Police said earlier in the week that they were focused on crowd security in light of attacks that killed three at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

"We're aware of the events in Boston," said Denver police spokesman Aaron Kafer, who declined to give specifics about security measures being taken. "Our message to the public is that, if you see something, say something."

Stephanie Riedel, who traveled to the pot celebration from Pittsburgh, said she was dancing with a hula hoop when she heard pops. A man ran past her, then she said the crowd started screaming and running away. She was about 20 feet from the shooting and heard four or five shots.

"I couldn't make sense of what it was at first," she said. "We were all having a good time and I was in the mindframe of, we're here at a peace gathering. I thought it some guys playing."

Rapper Lil' Flip was performing when the shootings occurred.

Aerial footage showed the massive crowd frantically running from the park.

Ian Bay, who was skateboarding through Civic Center Park when shots erupted, said he was listening to music on his headphones when he looked to his right and saw a swarm of hundreds of people running at him.

"I sort of panicked. I thought I was going through an anxiety thing because so many people were coming after me," he said.

Before the shooting, reggae music filled the air, and so did the smell of marijuana, as celebrants gathered by mid-morning in the park just beside the state Capitol.

Group smoke-outs were planned Saturday from New York to San Francisco. The origins of the number "420" as a code for pot are murky, but the drug's users have for decades marked the date 4/20 as a day to use pot together.

Colorado and Washington are still waiting for a federal response to the votes and are working on setting up commercial pot sales, which are still limited to people with certain medical conditions. In the meantime, pot users are free to share and use the drug in small amounts.

A citizen advocacy group that opposes marijuana proliferation, Smart Colorado, warned in a statement that public 4/20 celebrations "send a clear message to the rest of the nation and the world about what Colorado looks like."

"Does the behavior of the participants in these events reflect well on our state?" asked the head of Smart Colorado, Henny Lasley.

A smaller Sunday event scheduled at the park was canceled.

Saturday's attack recalled a similar shooting that left a police officer dead at a crowded jazz concert in Denver's City Park last summer.

The 22-year-old suspect in that case pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and faces at least 16 years in prison when he is sentenced at a hearing scheduled for June 21.

His attorneys said he was being pursued by gang members when he drew his weapon and fired.
