The possible future to the NFL head injury lawsuits | New Orleans ...

Former NFL players continue to add to the list of concussion-related lawsuits that the professional football league is facing, with the number of lawsuits now exceeding 3,400. That means the NFL is looking at potentially billions of dollars in legal damages should they lose court battles with the players, all of whom allege that the NFL knowingly withheld information about the safety of the game from players while they were active members of the league.

Many of those players are now suffering from disabilities and complications resulting from repeated concussions and trauma to the brain. They say the NFL knew about a link between concussion and brain diseases for decades but never made that information available to players.

In addition to the NFL, NFL Properties and Riddell, the league's helmet manufacturer, are also being accused by former players of failing to adequately protect football players.

With the NFL's financial well-being at stake, it is under pressure to adequately defend its role in addressing player safety. It is expected that the league will argue reasonable care/no negligence, which means that the league did not intentionally mislead players or withhold information. They will also maintain their long-held stance that the NFL never knew the dangerous effects of concussions.

The NFL is also likely to argue the issue at hand is addressed in the collective bargaining agreement signed between the league's team owners and the players, and that according to the legal agreement the lawsuits should be dismissed so that the issue can be addressed in the arbitration process. A number of other arguments, including assumption of risk, causation and contributory negligence, are expected to be made if the case goes to court.

It's possible that the case will become a class-action suit, given the enormity of individual lawsuits already filed and the numerous potential plaintiffs regarding the case. A class-action lawsuit could be significant, representing as many as 20,000 former NFL players. In such a scenario, the NFL could be looking at several billion dollars in losses.

However, regardless of how the case plays out in court, already the positive is that attention is being given to head trauma and has resulted in many states adopting legislation intended to better protect youth athletes who play football in order to limit repeated concussions.

15 ways to eat and drink for free or on the cheap | Death and Taxes

Feeling the squeeze in these harsh economic times? Fear not, for there are ways to find nourishment without spending money on agribusiness fruits, vegetables and meat, etc., or on a parade of juices, sodas, and so forth.

Note that ?free,? as defined here in my article, only means no payment to receive food. That is, one would not be handing $13 to Chipotle for a burrito with fuckin? guacamole. There are labor and costs to everything, even free food. One has to work, or put forth effort, to get these things; but the bank account will not take a hit in the process. At the very least, one will be well-exercised and make some new friends. Also, some of these methods require a small monetary investment that will effectively pay for itself in no time.

1.?Forage

No, this is not dumpster diving. Back in my native Wisconsin, people could be seen on the side of the road picking asparagus or rhubarb. In the spring as a young adult and teenager, I would join my dad in hunting for morel mushrooms (not magic mushrooms). Morels can be found across North America and in Europe. It takes some skill and patience to find them, but it can be done and it?s fun.

What other food can be foraged? Dandelions, which are readily available, can be picked and used in a salad. Berries are also abundant, especially mulberries, which I picked a lot as a kid. Very tasty. Also, look for nuts, like chestnuts, and then crack them like your grandpappy used to. And acorns, if prepared correctly, are also good to eat.

Do a search on the internet for rural and urban foraging. You will be surprised at the type of shit you can get into.

?2. Buy a Canteen

At approximately $20, buying a canteen isn?t free, but having it with you for ready access to water wherever you go is cost-effective in the long-term. Take it with you everywhere and fill up at public water fountains, inside cafes and anywhere else water is freely accessible. Yes, the cost of water is passed onto a cafe?s consumer in the form of coffee prices, but this is marginal. Fill up. At a restaurant? Ask for a water, then pour that shit in your canteen when the waitress isn?t looking.

Canteens pay for themselves in mere days.

3. Grow Your Own Fruits & Veggies

Again, there is a start-up cost here, but ultimately the only costs over time are one?s time and effort. A country residence will provide more space for gardening, naturally, but this can be done in the city in the form of patio gardens. Dwarf peach, blood orange, lemon, and pineapple trees, amongst others, are available for a reasonable price. Yes, it costs some money. But it?s a great investment because the trees live quite long. After a year, provided the trees are well-cared for, one could be eating fruit for free after paying off the initial investment.

4. Volunteer

A great way of getting free food (on occasion) is to volunteer at an organization. I volunteered at a place here in NYC recently, which had a cafe and a lot of events, and the cafe?s food was either free or discounted. When there were events, I was able to get free food and drink. Fantastic. Of course, the real reason to volunteer is to do something good for one?s community?but it never hurts to reap the rewards for right action.

5. Coupons

Admittedly, I am not a coupon collector, but I have heard of and I have seen with my very own two eyes people walking out of a grocery story getting incredible value for their money. They may have gotten $30 worth of food for $10 or something to that effect. It can be done. Coupons are annoying, but think of the savings the next time they are stuffed in your mailbox.

6. Go Fishing

This is a no-brainer, so why don?t people do it more often? Time, lack of proximity to a body of water, the feel of the slimy worms and fish? Ask for a fishing pole for your next birthday or Christmas/Hannukkah/Quanza present and then put it to use. Yes, you will have to buy a license, but one could conceivably catch enough fish to freeze them for numerous later dinner experiences.

7. Join a Co-Op

?Yes, yes? old hat,? you might say. But it?s rather surprising how many of us aren?t part of co-ops (myself included). Of my group of friends in NYC, where people talk environmental sustainability and quality, organic food consumption,?only one friend is part of a co-op. Join and reap the rewards.

8. Find Churches, Join Them

Nothing like a bit of blasphemy to slake one?s thirst and hunger. Churches have free food, if you can put up with the sermonizing.?If you?re looking for things to do whilst at church service or event, pick up the Bible and read Revelation, a real grade-A surreal horror show written by a delusional author that features, amongst other events: strange visions, supernatural terror, prostitution, lambs, devastation, dragons, beasts, the Antichrist, the number 7, a ?woman clothed with the sun,? the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?you get the point.

The Book of Job is also choice reading. Though I?m not religious, I have a special fondness for this book, which I think springs from the rather pleasant depiction of Satan, who, when God asks ?Whenst come thou??, Satan replies, ?From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.? Makes it seem rather like Satan was just strolling about the Earth digging all the beauty of the surroundings and enjoying a little voyeuristic peek-a-boo.

These books will help you get through the Christian religious service. I also played tic-tac-toe with my sister at Church when I was a teenager and made illustrations. This can be disguised as thoughtful note-taking. Just remember to nod and appear as though you are pondering some deep metaphysical thought.

Pulling this sort of stunt at a Jewish Synagogue, Mormon Temple or an Islamic Mosque would be quite a bit more difficult, perhaps even impossible; but that shouldn?t stop you from trying to take their free food. One could, I suppose, acquaint one?s self with the various tenets of each religion, but Muslim services are delivered in Arabic, while Synagogue services use a lot of Hebrew. If all else fails, look for English-speaking services.

Dig it.

9. Join Food Not Bombs

This is Food Not Bombs?s mission statement:

?Food Not Bombs recovers and shares free vegan or vegetarian food with the public without restriction in over 1,000 cities around the world to protest war, poverty and the destruction of the environment. Each group is independent and invites everyone to participate in making decisions for their local chapter using the consensus process. Food Not Bombs is dedicated to taking nonviolent direct action to change society so no one is forced to stand in line to eat at a soup kitchen expressing a commitment to the fact that food is a right and not a privilege. With over a billion people going hungry each day how can we spend another dollar on war??

Do this and you will be doing right by the world.

Righteous.

10. Gallery Openings

In a city like NYC, Los Angeles, Paris, San Francisco, London, etc., there are gallery openings nearly every night. Take advantage of this to procure as much free food and drink as possible. The internet is a great resource for finding which galleries will be servicing food and drink. You will undoubtedly meet some ponces (douchebags, scenesters), but the world is full of them anyway, so grin and bear it.

No need to worry about being polished when it comes to art history because artists, gallery owners and collectors have proven, beyond any reasonable doubt, that the art world is a conman?s extravaganza. A bullshit factory of epic proportions. (See: Jeff Koons.)

There is no shame in taking from these fucksticks.

11. Continental Breakfast

As kids, many of us enjoyed staying at a hotel with the parental units, then waking up in the morning to continental breakfast: juice, pastries, bagels, fruit, muffins, jelly, so forth. Map all of the nearest hotels within, say, a five-mile radius?something walkable or within cycling range. Once mapped, find out which ones have continental breakfast and pay them a visit.

Now, hotel staff will catch on after awhile, so it might be to your advantage to collect assorted disguises, including hats, glasses, and jackets. One might also consider researching the illusionist and spy?s playbook for altering one?s gate, posture, movements, facial ticks, etc. One can never be too prepared for the over-zealous hotel clerk.

12. Become a Dumpster-Diving Freegan

Dumpster-divers aren?t just bums, they are people with jobs who eschew the traditional means of acquiring food. Freegan.info is a great resource for the person considering it.

Like Food Not Bombs, Freegan.info writes:

Freegans are people who employ alternative strategies for living based on limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources. Freegans embrace community, generosity, social concern, freedom, cooperation, and sharing in opposition to a society based on materialism, moral apathy, competition, conformity, and greed?

Freeganism is a total boycott of an economic system where the profit motive has eclipsed ethical considerations and where massively complex systems of productions ensure that all the products we buy will have detrimental impacts most of which we may never even consider. Thus, instead of avoiding the purchase of products from one bad company only to support another, we avoid buying anything to the greatest degree we are able.

?It won?t solve the lust for flesh (see below), but we don?t need meat for every meal do we?

13. Watch for Restaurant and Bar Openings

Just as with the gallery opening tactic, so with restaurants and bar opening. It seems that restaurants are always opening an closing. It?s cyclical. And often times new establishments will have a grand opening with free food and drink. (Side note: many bars and restaurants offer either free food or drink as special to get people in the door. Take advantage of this, too, even though the experience is not ultimately free.)

14. Farmers Market Sampling

I feel a certain amount of guilt in admitting that I use this tactic, but so be it. Find all the farmers markets in your city, visit them, and sample everything you can. Farmers will serve samples of their peaches (lulz), apples, tomatoes, cucumbers, and a variety of other things. Return the favor, though, and buy something. We have to support the little guy.

15. Hunt

This may be disagreeable to some; and it, like fishing, has its startup costs, but it?s a great way to eat. You will not turn into some gun-toting, militia-fetishisizing Republican. Besides, many of you readers already eat meat?why not slaughter the thing yourself in a more humane way, to be cognitively dissonant for a moment?

Instead of buying a gun, ask to borrow a friend?s, or ask if you can join him or her on a hunt. Offer to pay for ammunition or gas money for the trip to the country. There is federal and state land everywhere available for hunting?take advantage of it. For my money the best game is pheasant, quail and, of course, turkey. Bag a few of those birds and you?re set for quite some time. Squirrels taste like shit. Deer (venison) and elk are excellent, too, though not for everyone. Partridge and chuckers are quite tasty as well.

Yes, you are reading this on Death & Taxes.

AEP launches $10M ad campaign encouraging energy conservation

American Electric Power Company Inc. has been promoting smart-meter technology with its mobile GridSmart Demonstration Project.?

American Electric Power Company Inc. (NYSE:AEP) plans to spend nearly $10 million over the next three years on an advertising campaign aimed at getting its customers in Ohio to cut their energy use.

That may sound counterintuitive for a company whose profits are driven in part by electricity sales, but that is the reality for power companies in Ohio because of energy efficiency standards approved by state legislators in 2008.

The new campaign, dubbed ?Energy is Precious. Let?s Not Waste It,? features advertising in the all the markets served by AEP Ohio, including Columbus, said spokeswoman Terri Flora. The ads have started running in newspapers and magazines and appearing on television, radio, billboards and digital media.

Created by Engauge Columbus, the ads talk about wasted energy in what an AEP release describes as ?humorous style.? They feature icons that show wasted energy in everyday scenarios.

?We continue to try find ways to educate customers about energy efficiency programs to help them save money,? Flora told me.

She said AEP Ohio?s appliance rebate program will be at the center of the advertising campaign. It provides rebates to customers for buying Energy Star-certified clothes washers, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and compact fluorescent light bulbs. The company also is continuing to pay customers for having their old, inefficient refrigerators or freezers picked up and recycled.

Ohio utility regulators allow AEP to recover the cost of educational and outreach efforts on its energy efficiency programs through a rider on customers? bills. It works out to less than $2 a month for an average residential customer, Flora said.

Also as part of the ?Energy is Precious? effort, AEP has developed a mobile interactive exhibit in conjunction with Event Marketing Strategies. The custom coach and has been making the rounds at county fairs and other events this summer, showing off ways for consumers to save money by conserving energy. It?s scheduled to make stops at the Columbus Italian Festival from Oct. 5-7 and the Circleville Pumpkin Festival Oct. 17-20.

AEP also has a custom coach to promote smart-meter technology with a mobile GridSmart Demonstration Project.

Obama visits Texas to mark Iraq war anniversary

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is serving up an election-year reminder that he ended the Iraq war, visiting a Texas military base two years to the day that he formally declared the end of the U.S. combat mission.

Obama's visit Friday to the vast Fort Bliss Army post in El Paso underscores a point Obama has made repeatedly on the campaign trail: He made a promise to end the unpopular Iraq war and kept it. Obama also visited Fort Bliss on Aug. 31, 2010, the day he announced the end of the U.S. combat role.

The White House says the visit is official business ? not campaign-related, although the distinction is not always clear. Obama will speak to troops and have a round-table discussion with service members and military families, the White House said.

Obama returns to the campaign trail on Saturday with appearances in Iowa.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said the visit to Fort Bliss will highlight administration efforts to support U.S. service members and their families, both in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those efforts include attempts to combat what Carney called "unseen wounds" of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, including post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

Fort Bliss soldiers participated in the Iraqi invasion in 2003 and were among the last to serve in combat roles there. The post endured significant losses during the Iraq war.

Carney told reporters Thursday that the visit was about more than politics. He called Obama's record on defense issues substantive and said the president had a "profound commitment" to end the war in Iraq and bring U.S. troops home.

"Part of ending the war in Iraq responsibly is standing by those who served," Carney said.

Veterans are a key voting bloc in the closely fought presidential race.

A Gallup tracking poll in August shows Republican Mitt Romney leads Obama, 55 percent to 38 percent among veterans. Exit polls conducted in 2008 showed voters who had served in the military preferred Republican John McCain over Obama by 10 percentage points.

At their party's convention this week in Tampa, Fla., Romney and other Republicans made repeated references to veterans. Romney broke away from the convention Wednesday to speak to the American Legion in Indianapolis.

Mindful of his poll numbers, Obama has sharply contrasted his record on Iraq and Afghanistan with Romney's rhetoric.

Campaigning in Virginia on Wednesday, Obama cited Romney's comment that ending the war in Iraq was "tragic."

His Republican rival "doesn't have a plan to bring home the 33,000 troops who will be coming home from Afghanistan next month," Obama said. "He likes to talk tough, but he doesn't have a lot of details when it comes to these critical issues. "

By contrast, Obama said ? repeating a familiar theme ? "When I say I will end the war in Iraq, I will end it. When I say that we will go after (Osama) bin Laden, we'll go after him."

As long as he is commander in chief, Obama added, "we will serve our veterans as well as they've served us. I mean it."

Sherman Hemsley's Body Remains In Storage Due To Problems ...

While deaths and funerals can bring some people together, all to often it seems to stir up some trouble within a family. ?Unfortunately, it seems that that may be what is happening with the family of actor Sherman Hemsley. ?Sherman died a little over a month ago, on July 24th, after losing a battle with lung cancer. ?But his body has yet to be buried, as there?s a dispute in the validity of his will, according to The Sacramento Bee.

Sherman Hemsley Dead At 74 Sherman Hemsleys Body Remains In Storage Due To Problems With Will

In the will Hemsley signed six weeks before dying of?lung cancer?July 24 he named Flora Enchinton, 56, whom he called a ?beloved partner,? as sole beneficiary of his estate, which is estimated in court documents to be more than $50,000.

The will is being contested by Richard Thornton, of Philadelphia, who claims to be Hemsley?s brother and says the will might not have been made by the actor.

Someone claiming to be his brother saying it may not be Sherman?s signature?? Man?where were you when Sherman was going through his illness?? YOU WASN?T WITH HIM SHOOTIN? IN THE GYM!! Has anyone else ever experienced the ?long lost relatives? emerging from the darkness after a family member?s death? ?That?s just horrible. ?Sherman?s partner Flora did have a few words to say about his?alleged?brother though:?

Enchinton told The Associated Press on Wednesday that she had been friends with Hemsley and had been his manager for more than 20 years. Over the time she, Hemsley and Hemsley?s friend Kenny Johnston, 76, lived together, she said he never mentioned any relatives.

?Some people come out of the woodwork ? they think Sherman, they think money,? Enchinton said. ?But the fact it that I did not know Sherman when he was in the limelight. I met them when they (Hemsley and Johnston) came running from?Los Angeles?with not one penny, when there was nothing but struggle.?

SMH Hope they get this resolved so they can finally lay his body to rest.

JinkoSolar, Solea Renewables to install 1MW utility scale PV system in South Africa

CTBR Staff Writer Published 31 August 2012

Solar power product manufacturer JinkoSolar will partner Solea Renewables to install a 1MW utility scale photovoltaic system at the Limpopo province chrome mine in South Africa.

The system is expected to produce 1.8GWh electricity per annum and help reduce the mine's dependency on diesel.

The fully integrated turnkey PV system will be designed, engineered and constructed by Solea Renewables employing 4,170 polycrystalline PV panels to be supplied by JinkoSolar.

Solea Renewables director Vusi Mhlanzi remarked increasing demand for minerals and metals from South Africa has created power supply constraints, leading miners and government to explore for alternative solutions.

"As the plant is expected to be completed by late October, 2012, the electricity generated by JinkoSolar quality solar panels will definitely reduce the mine's daytime diesel consumption while securing our client's with a natural long-term hedge against all rising costs of power," said Mhlanzi.

JinkoSolar CEO Kangping Chen added, "We have great expectations for South Africa."

"The region's booming population, strong economic growth and abundant sunlight represent an exciting opportunity for solar and for JinkoSolar."

The Angler: The Auto-Biography

A Tribute to Those Who Stole My Heart: The Jaguar XJ220 By chance, I happened upon a quaint little gem devoted to the preservation of the automotive arts while on vacation this summer. Though perhaps a bit rundown, the Sarasota Classic Car Museum held several cars that captured my interest. Of course, there was the odd Ferrari, some Maserati?s, and even a Mercedes-Benz owned by John Lennon, but no other car made my heart skip a beat a first glance like the cool-grey beast sleeping soundly at the end of a dimly lit hall; the Jaguar XJ220 Perhaps the highest summit ever peaked by Jaguar in their mountainous career, the XJ220 stands high above any of the other big cats the company has or possibly ever will produce. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6, which produces a beating heart capable of generating 542 base horsepower, the XJ220 claimed the world record for fastest production car when it leapt onto the automotive scene in 1992.

(Jaguar XJ220 Concept as it appeared in the official 1988 press packet.)

Originally designed as a demonstration of Jaguar?s design studio and engineering team?s prowess, the XJ220 was welcomed with such enthusiasm at the 1988 British Motor Show that the company formed an exploratory group to investigate the feasibility of turning the concept into a production car. Many of the concept?s design features however ? such as scissor doors, a 6.2-litre V12 engine, and 4-wheel drive layout ? were sacrificed in the name of saving weight and improved performance, upsetting many customers in the process. Couple to that the global recession of the early nineties and customers challenging Jaguar in court over failure to meet initial production claims, and the result was the colossal commercial flop the XJ220 eventually became. Despite a sticker price of ?460,000 (or $747,500 USD), Jaguar lost money on each XJ220 and was only able to produce 281 units, far less than the initially promised 350. The car also suffered severe turbo lag, as well as poor braking and cornering on the track But if you?re one of the lucky few to ever behold a XJ220 crouching quietly at a stoplight, you?ll quickly realize the appeal of this car lies not with the figures, but rather with the feelings it evokes. From the three-slit gills at the base of the front windscreen and rear window, to the way lids retract to conceal the headlamps, one cannot but feel as though the XJ220 is a living, breathing, road devouring apparition rather than a collection of mechanical bits and bobs. This car has soul, which is the most important quality that can be attained. Cars with soul provide links through which the driver and car become one, separating them from the everyday, humdrum commuting machines. The XJ220 rounds every bend and dip in the road as athletically and gracefully as the powerful cat it bears as its mascot. It does not merely move along the crowded motorway, but rather lies low in the brush, stalking other the vehicles, looking for an unsuspecting Toyota Prius to ambush or a docile herd of Freightliner 18-wheelers to spook into a stampede.?? It?s why this car Stole My Heart.

Parts of Arctic now 'like a giant slushie' (+video)

Sea ice in the Arctic has hit a record low, and scientists say that it could accelerate global warming.?

Long-term thinning of Arctic sea ice combined with an intense, windy storm over the Arctic in early August contributed to a new record low for sea-ice extent, scientists said Monday (Aug. 27).

Al Jazeera's Nick Clark joined an expedition travelling deep into the Arctic Circle to Qaanaaq, in Greenland.

"It used to be?the Arctic ice cover?was like a big block of ice," said Walt Meier, a research scientist with the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) during a press conference held after the new record low was set on Sunday (Aug. 26). "Now it's become crushed ice and that is a lot easier to melt and melt more quickly. Parts of the Arctic have become like a giant slushie. [That] makes them more vulnerable to these types of storms."

The storm persisted over the central Arctic Ocean for several days, bringing warm and very windy conditions to the Chukchi and East Siberian Seas, followed by low temperatures. Strong wind and wave action from storms like this can increase melt by breaking up ice, according to a NSIDC report following the storm.

On Sunday (Aug. 26), Arctic sea-ice extent fell to a new record: 1.58 million square miles (4.10 million square kilometers), surpassing the previous low, 1.61 square miles (4.17 square kilometers) set on Sept. 18, 2007, the NSIDC reported. [10 Things to Know About Sea Ice]

Sea-ice watchers?saw this coming, at least to some degree.

"As early as maybe July we were able to project that the 2012 ice cover will likely be similar to 2007, but then in August, when we have this storm, the values for 2012 started to go down lower," said Josefino Comiso, a sea ice researcher with NASA.

Sea-ice extent describes the area of ocean?covered at least 15 percent by sea ice?as measured by satellite instruments. Continuous satellite measurements of sea-ice extent date back to the late 1970s.

Sea-ice extent grows and retreats with the season every year. While there are significant fluctuations in this cycle from year to year, by the late 1990s satellite measurements indicated there was a strong downward trend in sea-ice extent, said Claire Parkinson a climatologist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

By the end of the 1990s, submarine data showed the ice was thinning as well, Parkinson said.

The old ice, which survives year after year and maintains thicknesses of 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.6 meters), has been disappearing from the Arctic waters, Meier said. Now, Arctic sea ice has become thinner and is more easily melted or pushed around by storms, he said. "The Arctic Ocean is really a different place than it used to be," he said.

The loss of Arctic sea ice has serious implications for the animals ??polar bears?and walruses ? that use it as habitat.

EAST LANSING, Mich. Computer viruses are constantly replicating throughout computer networks and wreaking havoc. But what if they had to find mates in order to reproduce?

In the current issue of Evolution, Michigan State University researchers created the digital equivalent of spring break to see how mate attraction played out through computer programs, said Chris Chandler, MSU postdoctoral researcher at MSU's BEACON Center for the Study of Evolution in Action.

"This is actually a big question that still generates a lot of debate," said Chandler, who co-authored the study with Ian Dworkin, assistant professor of zoology, and Charles Ofria, associate professor of computer science and engineering. "People have some good ideas, but they can be hard to test really well in nature, so we decided to take a different approach."

The novel approach involved creating promiscuous programs in a virtual world called Avida, a software environment in which specialized computer programs compete and reproduce. Because mutations happen when Avidians copy themselves, which lead to differences in reproductive rates, these digital organisms evolve, just like living things, added Ofria, who created Avida.

The researchers programed the Avidians with the ability to grow sexual displays e-peacock tails of sorts. They also allowed them to choose mates randomly. As the researchers predicted, they usually went for the showiest mates. But why?

"One school of thought argues that the main benefit of choosing an attractive partner is that your offspring also will be sexy," said Dworkin. "In the other camp are those who argue that these sexual ornaments are a sign of good health, and so choosing a showy mate ensures that you'll get good genes to pass on to your offspring."

Traditionally, biologists thought that ornamental displays clue in potential mates about an individual's virility because the structures are costly, biologically speaking; only an animal in really good health could bear the burden they impose. So the researchers altered Avidians' genetic code to allow them to grow exaggerated displays practically for free.

They expected this change to diminish the evolutionary benefits of preferring showy mates, since even the wimpiest of Avidians could now grow enormous digital tail feathers.

"I was surprised when we didn't find that at all," Chandler said. "Even when we eliminated the costs of these displays, they still evolved to be an indicator of a male's genetic quality."

Freshbooks: Small Business Accounting that Isn't Scary

Today for Work at Home Wednesday, I?m going to talk about something that sends a shiver down the spines of most freelancers and/or sole proprietors, accounting.? When I started getting sponsored post opportunities and freelance writing opportunities, I knew I had to track my income for tax purposes, but I had no idea how to run small business accounting.? So when Quickbooks for Mac had a sale going, I snatched it up, ready to become more professional and use the well-known software.?? I cannot tell you the headaches I had with Quickbooks, mainly because I have income coming in from a variety of sources from many different ?clients? or media companies.?? Even looking at the little Quickbooks icon filled me with dread and I began to understand why some business owners use the ?shove receipts in boxes? approach.

I ignored the problem for a while and then just used a plain old Excel sheet to track income and expenses.? This approach worked okay but I had tons of different sheets going on and it was still less than ideal.? One day a few weeks ago I got fed up and worried about taxes so I searched online for easy to use, simple small business accounting systems.? I checked a handful of the recommended options out and ended up signing up for the ?free? version of Freshbooks.? I am not getting paid to write this post, although I did use a referral link. Mostly, I?ve been telling everyone in my family about this product for days, going on and on about it, so I thought why not share it for Work at Home Wednesday?

Freshbooks is a new start-up company located in Toronto.? Their website uses cloud accounting, meaning all of your accounting is stored online and if your computer dies, it?s all still online.? You can print hard copy reports once a day or week to keep in your files.? No amount of acronyms (OMG, etc.) can express how much I love this company.? It has saved me hours of time that I can spend working and getting new clients.? Here are some reasons I love it.

  1. The website is so simple.? Here are the options: create an invoice, track your time, create an expense, generate a report, check off an invoice as paid.
  2. Clients can pay by Paypal.? When you email them the invoice, they can print out a PDF of the invoice and/or they can click the link to your own?Freshbooks website and pay online with Paypal.? I have a client that pays via check, so I email them the invoice, they print off a PDF of the invoice and tear off the payment stub and mail it to me with the check.? Then I go into Freshbooks, select their invoice, select paid in full and have?Freshbooks send them an email saying the invoice is paid in full so they know I received payment.?? In the terms of my invoice, I include ?Please send payment via check, or via Paypal or Chase Quick Pay to the following email address: {my email} within 15 days of receiving this invoice.?
  3. It took me two hours to create invoices and mark them as paid for all of the work I?ve done this year.? Now all of my accounting for the year is totally caught up (Finally)! What a relief!
  4. Their iPhone app launched yesterday.? I gave it a test run last night and it is just as simple, professional, and easy to use as the website.
  5. The invoices you send to clients are simple, clean, and customizable. I?m proud to email and/or print and mail these invoices to clients.
  6. Adding an expense to a client is simple, you just click the ?add to client? button under expenses.
  7. They have a free account if you only have a few clients, but I upgraded to the $20/month account because I have 10-12 sporadic clients and a handful of regular clients.? Every penny is worth it plus you can expense the fees (be sure to add your Freshbooks payment as a recurring expense in your Freshbooks account).
  8. If I do a blog campaign and the company just sends me the money straight to my Paypal account, I just create an invoice for the money I made and click ?paid in full? that way I have a record of all income in one place.
  9. I just did a research project that was paid by the hour.? I created a new project and assigned it to the client, opened the time tracker, selected the client, the project and the task and clicked ?start.?? When I finished, I clicked stop.? Then I selected generate invoice for that project, selected the project I just finished working on and Freshbook generated the invoice with the item I?d worked on, time, and rate.? I clicked send invoice and I was done!
  10. It?s only me at Hoffman Writing Services, but if you have multiple people working on a project, you can add their time individually to an invoice.
  11. Freshbooks can generate simple reports to show you how productive you are at different projects and how well you are managing your time.

Now if you have a larger business, you may need something with more options, but for me as a freelancer with many different clients,??Freshbooks is absolutely golden.? If you are a freelance graphic designer, photographer, or freelance writer who needs to send invoices and track expenses, give this website a try.? I am so excited about this product and would love to answer any questions you have in the comments!

Enjoy!

Twitter to let advertisers target tweeters

1 hr.

Twitter will begin allowing advertisers to directly target users based on the interests they reveal in their tweets, the social media company said Thursday.

In an effort to draw advertisers to its paid ads program, the company also slashed the minimum price of "promoted tweets" to just a penny.

No longer content to be a "dumb" bulletin board, with 400 million micro-messages posted daily, Twitter has moved to a strategy of actively sifting through what each user is reading and tweeting in order to discern every individual's interests.

Google has long reaped huge profits by displaying ads based on what a user searches for in its search engine, while Facebook, a Twitter competitor, encourages users to proactively input their "likes." But Twitter has long faced the challenge of indirectly inferring these preferences.

Twitter will now allow companies to send paid ads in the forms of tweets to groups of users, bunched in more than 350 interest categories curated by Twitter itself.

CEO Dick Costolo has said in recent months that his company's value lies in its ability to mine its flow of information to build "an interest graph" showing its users' preference profiles -- which could be used by marketers to deliver targeted and relevant ads.

For instance, sports apparel retailers can target soccer fanatics for promotions, or film distributors might send tweets directed at keen Bollywood fans.

The new offering will allow companies to reach a "very narrow, very specific and incredibly focused audience," Kevin Weil, a Twitter director of product management, said in an interview.

Twitter engineers believe they can build a compelling ad delivery platform, particularly if marketers craft ads that seem to blend in with the tone and format of the service's flow of tweets, which are seen by some 140 million monthly active users.

In building its interest graph, Twitter analyzes "a host of signals," Weil said, including which accounts a user follows, as well as the subjects of tweets that are most frequently recirculated or replied to by the user.

The company's algorithms closely evaluate the latter, giving "a direct measure of what you're interested in," Weil said.

Between 1 and 3 percent of users who see a "promoted tweet" -- a paid ad -- click on the tweet in some way. But early beta tests have shown the engagement rate to be higher when tweets are directed using its new interest-targeting tool, Weil said, while declining to discuss specific results.

Valued at more than $8 billion but expected by analysts to make less than $300 million in revenue in 2011, Twitter has aggressively ramped up its advertising capabilities. But in streamlining its product to better show ads, the company has cracked down on how third-party services may use its content, sparking an outcry from Silicon Valley technologists who would like Twitter to remain a neutral media platform.

In protest against what they viewed as a Twitter experience increasingly corrupted by advertising, software developers in California this month launched App.net, a Twitter-like rival that is supported by a $50 membership fee rather than ads.

Barclays hit by fraud probe over Mideast investors

LONDON (AP) ? Scandal-hit Barclays bank says it's facing yet another investigation ? this one relating to the billions it raised from Middle Eastern investors back in 2008.

The bank said Wednesday that Britain's Serious Fraud Office was looking into whether Barclays was open enough about what it had paid advisers when it raised more than 5 billion pounds of emergency capital at the height of the global financial crisis.

The private lifeline helped Barclays avoid the humiliating government bailouts that the Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds were forced to accept after high-flying executives overloaded the banks with unsustainable amounts of debt.

Barclays' corporate reputation is already under siege after scandals over selling small businesses complex financial products they didn't need and revelations that the bank fixed a key market interest rate.

heritage scrapbooking

Most of us who scrapbook are storytellers ? we want to tell the stories that matter, the stories that mean something to us. And I cannot think of a better way to tell the stories of your family than to create heritage scrapbook pages. Heritage scrapbook pages allow you to capture the stories of your family and helps to connect you to the past. I love researching my family history and then creating pages to document the past. I love learning how different their lives were from mine today as well as how the things that they experienced have affected our family traditions. It meets my own need to build meaningful connections between the past, today and our futures. I thought that we?d take a look at some basic tips for creating amazing heritage pages and then look at a bunch of heritage pages to help get you inspired to document your OWN family history!

First, let?s talk about some basics -

1. Organization of photos and stories from the past is critical when you decide you want to begin documenting your family?s history. Being organized up front will make the creation of your pages so much easier later! I would suggest that you gather your photos, stories and ephemera (the ?stuff?) and organize them in a way that makes sense to you. Personally, I?ve chosen to organize my own heritage stuff by person ? I have a folder for each of my ancestors and put all of the relevant photos, ephemera and stories into that folder. Then, when I?m ready to create a page about a particular person or event, I know right where to go to get all of the details!

2. Regardless of how you intend to scrapbook your family history ? digitally or with paper ? I strongly recommend that you have ALL of your priceless family photos scanned into digital images. Then, you can be assured that nothing you do while creating heritage pages will hurt your photos in any way. This will also allow you to share these photographs with other family members who may be interested in having a copy!

3. Don?t be afraid to scrapbook the family photos or stories! Yes, they are precious ? but don?t let that stop you! In fact, let that be the very reason for getting them documented as soon as possible! They are precious and deserve to be told!? Nothing you create will do anything but give them the attention they deserve!? Push past any reservations you might have and JUST DO IT!

And now for a few general tips for scrapbooking heritages pages -

1. Tell those stories and be sure to include any details you know about what was happening! Journaling is key for heritage pages ? even if its just a few details! Also, don?t let not having a photo keep you from telling the story ? create a photo-less page or find elements that help support the story you want to tell. Use the historical or cultural details of the time to help tell your stories as well! Let me give you an example ? we know that my grandfather was present during the bombing of Pearl Harbor but I don?t know any details beyond his being present & the impact his presence at that historical even had later on in his own family. But, I did some research and created a page all about the bombing of Pearl Harbor since we know he was there for such a major historical event! That is an important story about our family even if I don?t have photos or details!

2. Use scrapbooking papers and elements that make the most sense to you! A lot of people think they have to use tradition heritages kits and supplies (which are often muted and neutral) but you definitely do not need to limit yourself! Use color and whatever materials scream out to you! Don?t limit yourself to just neutrals ? jump outside of that box and try something unexpected!

3.? Try mixing today?s photos with your heritage photos and create comparison pages. What life was like then versus what its like today is a great way to showcase the changes over time in your family!

I hope that some of these tips will help you as you begin to think about creating pages about your family! Once you get started, I think you will LOVE each and every page! It?s so special to capture the memories of the past & honor them in your scrapbooks!

And, last but not least, let?s take a look at some AMAZING heritage pages! I?ve tried to give you a good mix of traditional and non traditional heritage pages ? to show you how there really aren?t any limits to what you can do while documenting your family?s history!
