My Thoughts on Vintage Baseball

I thought I'd take a moment to post on my favorite forum some of my thoughts about baseball that have been in my head for a long time. Pretty random thoughts. I'm sure you have your own as well. Let's find out.
Happy New Year everybody.

To this day I confuse Max Bishop and Bing Miller.

Is Nick Altrock in every team photo of all time?

Hey did you know that when the Yankees dealt Urban Shocker to the Browns they got Eddie Plank in return who retired before reporting?

Jeff Tesreau goes with Claude Passeau who goes with Paul Derringer

Of all the old timers I think about, I want to hear John McGraw's voice the most. How bout you? What player would you like to hear speak?

Don't really like composite photos. I much rather enjoy the thought of the team getting together for a pciture than a printer piecing together existing photos.

Is that actually Jimmy Collins leaping in the Red Belt post card series?

Do you ever go on baseball reference.com, look up a player and then try to guess other players who have similar stats? They have 'similarity scores' at the bottom of each player's page - and it is downright addicting!

When Harry Hooper went to the White Sox how did the Boston fans react?

Isn't it exciting when you see an old publication choose not to use the typical photos of players? I mean Cobb sliding into Jimmy Austin is great but c'mon editors...

Oh and I'd also give like my right arm to hear an interview with one Mr. Rube Waddell.

Does anyone else feel that Goudeys and Diamond Stars are okay but if you want to really get to know a guy you gotta have his exhibit card? (see Eppa Rixey)

I think it maybe time for me to read up on Hugh Jennings and see what made him so great; I'm getting a little tired of his dance, so a shot of education may help me appreciate him more.

and while we're on ol' Hughie, anyone have any candid shots of him? In every photo I see of him, he's either Ee ya-ing or shaking hands in a super posed shot with an opposing manager. gettin' a little boring.

Does anyone else hate the Yankees but love their cards from the early 1920's? Miller Huggins? Bullet Joe Bush? Those sweaters? Babe wasn't Babe juuuuuuust yet. Steinbrenner wasn't born till '30. They were gathering their power.

And how much do you love Lou's exhibit card calling him, Henry L. Gehrig? That's like calling Bono, Paul D. Hewson.

Whenever I come across a player who spent time as a pitcher AND as a hitter/fielder. I'm never 100% comfortable with them.

"Dots Miller!" And a nickname was born.

If you are a fan of vintage baseball and haven't listened to the recordings from Lawrence Ritter's The Glory of Their Times you are doing yourself a big injustice. You will be revited. I guarantee it.

Boy there are a lot of players on B&W caramel cards I don't know. WWI era players. I just never took the time to get to know them. Maybe 2012 I'll go Ivy Wingo on myself.

But I do know that Hank Gowdy is quite often the answer.

Do you remember when you first started collecting and thought certain players were superstars when they really weren't? Like for me Bobby Thomson was a huge name and I couldn't believe it when a dealer left him in with the commons. Not to mention - Rico Petrocelli, John Roseboro, Whitey Lockman, Ron Fairly and bringing it back to vintage - Zeke Bonura, Wild Bill Hallahan, Alvin Crowder, Pepper Martin come to mind. Red Ames is actually still in this category.

I am finally over getting Amos Rusie and Addie Joss mixed up.

Not for nothing but Frank Chance only had six seasons with over 100 hits.

Who wins an arm wrestle - Rabbit Maranville or Willie Keeler? Correct Rabbitt does.

And that reminds me, I gotta look up Willie Kamm.

So what would kids do, go to the candy store and buy strip cards off the role while the store owner cut them? Would they say, "give me 5 players?" Have we ever seen an entire role of these cards still rolled?

Why doesn't the hobby seem to like 1936 Goudeys Wide Pens? The shots are pretty cool. Do we not like our cardboard to actually be thin paper? (see Sporting News supplements)

And how do I know Joe Sewell was a nice guy? When he responded to my mom's request for an autograph for her son's 15th birthday he wrote on the bottom of her letter - "thanks for remembering me".

Anyone else want to tell what they've always been thinking?

Happy New Year. Have a great 2012.

peter

Cow power - Energy project to transform cow manure into green energy

King County Executive Dow Constantine joined local dairy farmers in Enumclaw to celebrate the beginning of construction on a digester project that will transform cow manure into green energy and other valuable resources.

?The robust agriculture industry on the Enumclaw Plateau is the perfect place for this innovation that will generate renewable energy, save money for family farmers, and preserve the environment,? said Executive Constantine.

Rainier Biogas LLC, a partnership between Skagit County-based company Farm Power Northwest, and at least three local dairies near Enumclaw, will build and operate the digester. The digester is an air-tight tank that uses microorganisms to break down or ?digest? the manure and organic matter. The bacteria produce waste gas that can be harnessed to make electricity. Construction on the $4 million project is scheduled to be completed in summer 2012.

Manure waste management on dairy farms is a significant operational challenge for farmers because of its volume and handling expense. Improperly managed manure can pollute water bodies.

Processing manure over three weeks in a 1-million-gallon digester vessel, Rainier Biogas will generate enough electricity to power 600 typical homes.

The elimination of manure lagoon methane emissions combined with clean electricity will reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 9,000 tons of CO2 per year, which is the equivalent of removing 2,200 cars from the road.

In addition, the treatment process separates digested straw from the processed manure, creating a source of cow bedding as well as a soil amendment to nourish fields that grow feed, saving farmers thousands of dollars a month in operational expenses.

Employees with King County?s Water and Land Resources and Wastewater Treatment divisions served as technical advisors related to agricultural sustainability and resource recovery, though the majority of the $492,000 King County has committed to the project came from federal grants appropriated by?? Senator Maria Cantwell and Representative Dave Reichert.

The groundbreaking celebration was also attended by Washington State Director of the USDA?s Office of Rural Development, Mario Villanueva; representatives from Puget Sound Energy, One Pacific Coast Bank, Washington State University and the Andgar Corporation.

US to Iran:?Oil disruption 'will not be tolerated'

The U.S. Navy's 5th fleet Wednesday warned Iran that any disruption of traffic flowing through the vital Strait of Hormuz oil route "will not be tolerated."

The warning came after Iran's navy chief Habibollah Sayyari told Iran's English language Press TV that "closing the Strait of Hormuz for Iran's armed forces is really easy ... or as Iranians say it will be easier than drinking a glass of water."

"But right now, we don't need to shut it as we have the Sea of Oman under control and we can control the transit," said Sayyari, who is leading 10 days of exercises in the Strait. His reference to control was unclear.

In response, 5th Fleet spokeswoman Lt. Rebecca Rebarich said, "Anyone who threatens to disrupt freedom of navigation in an international strait is clearly outside the community of nations; any disruption will not be tolerated."?

The U.S. Navy is "always ready to counter malevolent actions to ensure freedom of navigation," she said.

Rebarich declined to say whether the U.S. force had adjusted its presence or readiness in the Gulf in response to Iran's comments, but said the Navy "maintains a robust presence in the region to deter or counter destabilizing activities, while safeguarding the region's vital links to the international community."

At the Pentagon, Press Secretary George Little also said that Iranian interference with passage of vessels through the strategic waterway "will not be tolerated," NBC News reported.

Little said that blocking naval traffic through the Strait represents "an important issue for security and stability in the region," and called the Strait "an economic lifeline."

Iran's fears
Sayyari's warning underline Iranian concern that the West is about to impose new sanctions that could target Tehran's vital oil industry and exports.

Western nations are growing increasingly impatient with Iran over its nuclear program. The U.S. and its allies have accused Iran of using its civilian nuclear program as a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Iran has denied the charges, saying its program is geared toward generating electricity and producing medical radioisotopes to treat cancer patients.

The U.S. Congress has passed a bill banning dealings with the Iran Central Bank, and President Barack Obama has said he will sign it despite his misgivings. Critics warn it could impose hardships on U.S. allies and drive up oil prices.

The bill could impose penalties on foreign firms that do business with Iran's central bank. European and Asian nations import Iranian oil and use its central bank for the transactions.

Iran is the world's fourth-largest oil producer, with an output of about 4 million barrels of oil a day. It relies on oil exports for about 80 percent of its public revenues.

Iran has adopted an aggressive military posture in recent months in response to increasing threats from the U.S. and Israel that they may take military action to stop Iran's nuclear program.

Iran's navy is in the midst of a 10-day drill in international waters near the strategic oil route. The exercises began Saturday and involve submarines, missile drills, torpedoes and drones. The war games cover a 1,250-mile (2,000-kilometer) stretch of sea off the Strait of Hormuz, northern parts of the Indian Ocean and into the Gulf of Aden near the entrance to the Red Sea as a show of strength and could bring Iranian ships into proximity with U.S. Navy vessels in the area.

Iranian media are describing how Iran could move to close the strait, saying the country would use a combination of warships, submarines, speed boats, anti-ship cruise missiles, torpedoes, surface-to-sea missiles and drones to stop ships from sailing through the narrow waterway.

Iran's navy claims it has sonar-evading submarines designed for shallow waters of the Persian Gulf, enabling it to hit passing enemy vessels.

The Fifth Fleet consists of 20-plus ships supported by combat aircraft, with 15,000 people afloat and another 1,000 ashore.

A closure of the strait could temporarily cut off some oil supplies and force shippers to take longer, more expensive routes that would drive oil prices higher. It also potentially opens the door for a military confrontation that would further rattle global oil markets.

Iran claimed a victory this month when it captured an American surveillance drone almost intact. It went public with its possession of the RQ-170 Sentinel to trumpet the downing as a feat of Iran's military in a complicated technological and intelligence battle with the U.S.

American officials have said that U.S. intelligence assessments indicate the drone malfunctioned.

About the Strait of Hormuz:

Location: The most important oil transit channel in the world is a narrow bend of water separating Oman and Iran. It connects the biggest Gulf oil producers, such as Saudi Arabia, with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. At its narrowest point, the strait is only 21 miles across and consists of 2-mile-wide navigable channels for inbound and outbound shipping and a 2-mile-wide buffer zone.

Oil shipments

  • Flows through the Strait in 2009 were roughly 33 percent of all seaborne traded oil (40 percent in 2008), or 17 percent of oil traded worldwide, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
  • Some 15.5 million barrels passed through in 2009, according to the U.S. EIA. U.S. warships patrol the area to ensure the safe passage.
  • The bulk of the oil exported through the Strait of Hormuz travels to Asia, the United States and Western Europe. About three-quarters of Japan's oil imports and about 50 percent of China's pass through this strait.
  • An additional 2 million barrels of oil products, including fuel oil, are exported through the passage daily, as well as liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Other shipments: Merchant ships carrying grain, iron ore, sugar, perishables and containers full of finished goods also pass through the strategic sea corridor en route to Gulf countries and ports such as Dubai.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Samsung Repp (U.S. Cellular)

Picking up where the Samsung Gem (2.5 stars) left off, the Samsung Repp reps budget-priced, entry-level Android smartphones?for U.S. Cellular. With the classic LG Optimus U?(4 stars) now off the market, it's a good option, but you can still do better without having to spend a dime.

Design, Call Quality, and Apps
The Repp measures 4.4 by 2.3 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs just 3.7 ounces. It's lightweight and comfortable to hold, and looks significantly nicer than the angular Gem. Made entirely of plastic, the textured back panel of the phone is a "wine red" color, with a silver band separating it from more red detail on the front. The 3.2-inch plastic capacitive touch screen offers 320-by-480-pixel resolution. That's standard for low-end smartphones, and while it's usually not a problem, colors here look washed out and there's a pervasive, unpleasant stippling effect. Typing on the Repp's Swype keyboard felt a bit cramped, due to the small screen size. There are three function keys below the display, instead of the usual four. Two of them are touch keys, while the home key is a physical button.

The Samsung Repp is a dual-band EV-DO Rev 0 (850/1900 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. The Repp will hit 3G data speeds on U.S. Cellular, but it will be slightly slower than some other 3G phones, like the Samsung Mesmerize?(Free, 4.5 stars), which use the faster EVDO Rev A technology. It can also function as a mobile hotspot with the appropriate data plan.

Reception was fine and voice quality was good overall, a significant step up from the Gem. Voices sound clear and easy to understand in the earpiece, if just a touch thready. Calls made with the phone are equally clear, with good background noise reduction, though I noticed a slight ringing sound on occasion. The speakerphone sounds good and is just loud enough to use outdoors. Calls also sounded fine through a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars), and voice dialing worked over Bluetooth without training. Battery life was good at 7 hours, 43 minutes of talk time.

OS and Apps
The Repp runs Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread). There's no word on whether it will receive an update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), but we wouldn't hold out hope. Like the Gem, the version of Android running here is virtually?stock; there are no Samsung TouchWiz-like enhancements to be found. There are five customizable home screens you can swipe between, which come preloaded with a number of useful apps and widgets, along with some bloatware. Thankfully, though, the Repp isn't saddled with much more bloatware than the typical Android device, and what's there doesn't seem to slow things down.

Everything is powered by an 800MHz Qualcomm S1 processor. It's not blazing fast, but it gets the job done for most common tasks. The Repp benchmarked similarly to other lower-end Android phones.

App-wise, you get Google Maps Navigation for free voice-enabled, turn-by-turn GPS directions, and a bit of bloatware from U.S. Cellular. You should also be able to run most of the 250,000+ third-party apps in the Android Market.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
There's a side-mounted microSD card slot on the left side of the phone, which is a plus. Samsung includes a 2GB card; my 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine as well. Music tracks sounded clear through both wired earbuds as well as Altec Lansing Backbeat?Bluetooth headphones ($99.99, 3.5 stars). I was able to listen to AAC, MP3, OGG, WAV, and WMA test files, but not FLAC. Standalone MP4 and 3GP videos played back at resolutions up to 800-by-480, and audio was fine over Bluetooth.

The 3.2-megapixel camera has no auto-focus or flash. Shutter speeds are fast, but test photos leave much to be desired. Photos taken with the camera look dark, washed out, and a bit blurry. Recorded 320-by-240-pixel videos play back at 15 frames per second; they look smooth, but they're also not much larger than a postage stamp.

Despite its weak screen and camera, the Samsung Repp is a decent entry-level Android phone for U.S. Cellular. But you can do a lot better without having to spend any money. Our previous Editors' Choice, the Samsung Mesmerize, is now free, too. It runs the same major version of Android as the Repp does, and it's powered by a faster processor, has a better camera and a much nicer display. If you're willing to spend some extra money, our current Editors' Choice, the Motorola Electrify?($99.99, 4.5 stars) will set you back 100 bucks, but you'll get an ultra fast dual-core processor, beautiful display, and the ability to convert your phone into a laptop PC with the proper accessories.

Benchmarks
Continuous talk time: 7 hours 43 minutes

From coach to sex offender

Coach Matthew Ryndak showed an intense interest in teen basketball players that alarmed parents.

2003-07: Ryndak works as a middle school gym teacher and basketball coach at Leigh Elementary in Norridge. While there, parents note his controlling personality, according to one father, Stephen Frey.

Nov. 1, 2006-Feb. 28, 2007: Ryndak works as an assistant basketball coach at Ridgewood High School in Norridge. Frey's son complains about obsessive texting and calls from Ryndak.

May 2007: Ryndak is hired as head basketball coach at Johnsburg High School. Over the summer, he repeatedly asks a Johnsburg community booster to contact Frey and ask him to move his son to Johnsburg.

Late 2007: Johnsburg High basketball player Bob Hutchinson receives odd texts and calls from Ryndak, including one in which Ryndak asks the then-16-year-old about his pubic hair, according to Hutchinson and a Johnsburg police report.

July 2008: Hutchinson's mother, Mary Lou, contacts school officials after learning of the phone conversation. Another parent, Scott Dixon, also complains to school officials.

August 2008: The Hutchinsons and Dixons complain to Johnsburg police, who find no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

Oct. 13, 2008:Mary Lou Hutchinson writes to Johnsburg High School Principal Kevin Shelton, questioning why no disciplinary action has been taken.

Oct. 23, 2008: Ryndak resigns.

Oct. 29, 2008: A third parent complains to Johnsburg police, saying Ryndak has purchased an iPod Touch for his son. The father inquires about getting a restraining order against Ryndak after learning Ryndak has made derogatory statements in an email to his son, a police report states.

2009: Ryndak begins a new job as an assistant basketball coach for Crete-Monee High School, which later hires him as a full-time physical education teacher and coach during the 2010-11 season. He helps turn the team around with a 25-4 record.

May 2011: Ryndak is put on administrative leave after school officials learn that the Department of Children and Family Services is investigating an allegation of sexual abuse. He is charged with eight counts of aggravated sexual abuse against a teenage boy.

Nov. 2, 2011: Ryndak pleads guilty to four counts of aggravated sexual child abuse. He is sentenced to four years' probation and mental health counseling. He is labeled a sex offender, and his teaching certificate is revoked.

Al Qaeda leaders leaving Pakistan, moving to Africa: Report

London:? The Al Qaeda leadership, which has been weakened in Pakistan following the killing of many of its senior members -- including Osama bin Laden -- in drone strikes, is now suspected to be shifting to north Africa, a media report said on Monday.

British officials believe that a "last push" in 2012 may destroy Al Qaeda's remaining senior leadership in Pakistan, The Guardian reported.

Many senior Al Qaeda members have been killed in air strikes by unmanned drones and "only a handful of the key players" remain alive, said an official.

Al Qaeda's top leader Osama bin Laden was gunned down in Pakistan's Abbottabad town May 2 by US commandos who launched a daring operation using stealth helicopters.

Sources said that at least two relatively senior Al Qaeda leaders have made their way to Libya, with others intercepted en route. This has caused fears that north Africa could become a new "theatre of jihad".

"A group of very experienced figures from north Africa left camps in Afghanistan's (northeastern) Kunar province where they have been based for several years and travelled back across the Middle East," a source said, adding: "Some got stopped but a few got through."

The media report said it was not clear whether the move from Afghanistan-Pakistan to north Africa was prompted by a desire for greater security that may be unlikely as coalition forces begin to withdraw from Afghanistan or part of a strategic attempt to exploit the aftermath of the Arab spring.

A smaller flow of volunteers reaching makeshift bases in Pakistan's tribal areas has complicated matters for Al Qaeda.

"I think they are really very much weakened," an official was quoted as saying.

"You can't say they don't pose a threat -- they do -- but it's a much lesser one," he said.

Intelligence sources told The Guardian they estimate that there are less than 100 "Al Qaeda or Al Qaeda-affiliated" militants in Afghanistan.

On the Haqqani network, an official said there was evidence it had been acting as intermediaries between the Pakistani secret services and militant groups.

"To move against the Haqqanis is a no-win option for the Pakistani military. If they suffer heavy casualties and fail to eliminate the group, they lose their authority and a key interlocutor. If they succeed, they lose a key asset," the official said.

Paul's surge prompting a new look from GOP voters (AP)

SAN ANTONIO ? Ron Paul wants to legalize pot and shut down the Federal Reserve. He thinks the federal government has no authority to outlaw abortion, no business bombing Iran to keep it from acquiring a nuclear weapon, and no justification to print money unless it's backed up by gold bars.

And he might win the Iowa caucuses.

The closer the first votes of the 2012 presidential campaign get, the more competitive the Texas congressman has become. It's a moment his famously fervent supporters have longed for. Plenty of others are asking: What's Ron Paul about, again?

As in his two prior quixotic campaigns for president, Paul has toiled for months as a fringe candidate best known for staking out libertarian positions. As every other Republican candidate lined up to attack President Barack Obama's health care law and to promise tax cuts, Paul again demanded audits of the Federal Reserve and a return to the gold standard.

Leading in some state polls, Paul is getting a look from mainstream voters in Iowa, where the 76-year-old obstetrician has emerged as a serious contender in the Jan. 3 caucuses ? and in other early voting states, should he pull off a victory.

The sudden rush of attention to Paul's resume hasn't been kind. He's spent the past week disowning racist and homophobic screeds in newsletters he published decades ago, including one following the 1992 riots in Los Angeles that read, "Order was only restored in L.A. when it came time for the blacks to collect their welfare checks three days after rioting began."

"Everybody knows I didn't write them and they're not my sentiments, so it's sort of politics as usual," Paul said during a recent Iowa campaign stop.

Looking to cut into Paul's support, rivals laid into him on Tuesday.

In an interview on CNN, Newt Gingrich said Paul holds "views totally outside the mainstream of virtually every decent American." And Rick Santorum chided, "The things most Iowans like about Ron Paul are the things he's least likely to accomplish and the things most Iowans are worried about about Ron Paul are the things he can accomplish."

Paul returns to Iowa on Wednesday, giving his impressive grass-roots organization in the state a last chance to present, and perhaps defend, positions he's staked out over a long political career and reiterated during the 13 Republican debates held this year.

Paul has served a dozen terms in Congress as a Republican, but he espouses views that have made him the face of libertarianism in the U.S. He blames both Republicans and Democrats for running up the federal debt and opposes any U.S. military involvement overseas. He wants to bring home all troops from all U.S. bases abroad.

He vows to do away with five Cabinet-level departments ? Commerce, Education, Energy, Housing and Urban Development, and Interior ? and repeal the amendment to the Constitution that created the federal income tax. He opposes federal flood insurance and farm subsidies and wants to remove marijuana from the federal list of controlled substances while allowing states to decide how to regulate it.

He says he'll cut $1 trillion out of the first budget he offers as president. He doesn't believe in a border fence but says illegal immigrants shouldn't get a free education in public schools.

He's reliably described by political pundits as non-establishment, quirky, unorthodox. During a Republican debate in Sioux City, Iowa, earlier this month, Paul defended his views and rejected the idea that they make him unelectable.

"The important thing is, the philosophy I'm talking about is the Constitution and freedom, and that brings people together," Paul said. "It brings independents in the fold and it brings Democrats over on some of these issues."

Paul doesn't always side with the most extreme conservative proposals. When it comes to Gingrich's suggestion that judges could be hauled before Congress to explain their rulings, Paul joined other Republicans in dismissing the idea.

Paul's recent surge in Iowa isn't the first time the GOP establishment has been forced to pay attention to him. A fundraising blitz that netted $5 million in one day in 2008 led Republican operatives to weigh whether he was a bigger threat to siphon votes than previously thought.

Now he may be in his best position yet to do more than just steal votes.

"I see this philosophy as being very electable, because it's an American philosophy, it's the rule of law," Paul said.

Mexico police arrested over torture video (Reuters)

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) ? Mexican authorities arrested five policemen on Monday on suspicion of torture after a video was made public showing police officers submerging a detainee's head in a bucket of water.

An official at the attorney general's office said five Mexico City police officers were taken into custody over the alleged torture, which took place in the capital's tough inner city neighborhood of Tepito last month.

Soon after the incident, a video was posted on the Internet showing a man with his shirt pulled over his head being dunked in a bucket of water while in the custody of a unit of well-armed policemen. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spQi5-e4ft4 )

President Felipe Calderon's term in office has been dominated by an army-led crackdown on drug trafficking cartels, which sparked a wave of criminal violence that has claimed more than 45,000 lives in the past five years.

Human rights groups have accused the police and army of abuses, including torture and killings, though very few officials have been convicted. Last month activists asked the International Criminal Court in The Hague to investigate Calderon and top officials over the allegations.

Former Bucky Badger looking to bring "Jump Around" energy to Pasadena

WITI-TV, PASADENA?

A former Bucky Badger is jumping into the Rose Bowl festivities, looking to put a new spin on an old tradition. House of Pain's "Jump Around" always brings down the house at Camp Randall, and this fan is hoping to organize that same energy in Pasadena, and even attempt to set a Guinness World Record!

Badger alumnus Derek Hildebrandt now lives in Los Angeles, but nobody's questioning his team spirit. "I was Bucky from 1991 to 1993. It was an amazing college experience to do that," Hildebrandt said.

Hildebrandt has been to all four Rose Bowls in the last two decades, including a year ago against TCU. With him are thousands of Badger faithful, traveling to Pasadena, bringing along a taste of Madison tradition. "I remember seeing the silent 'Jump Around,' and thinking it was pretty awesome, but wish they'd play the music," Hildebrandt said.

This week, Hildebrandt opened "Operation Jump Around." He's hoping fans will play the song on their phones, to feel and hear the song this year. "As soon as the clock hits zero at the end of the third quarter, hit play, and turn your volume up high, and jump around," Hildebrandt said.

Hildebrandt says he's even submitting the event for a Guinness World Record - for most people to play a song concurrently on a mobile device.

IMF warns about Canadian household debt, says house prices overvalued by 10 per cent

OTTAWA (CP) ? A combination of high household debt, overpriced housing and external economic problems are putting Canada?s recovery at risk, the International Monetary Fund is warning.

The IMF?s annual report on the Canadian economy gives a mostly passing grade on the recovery so far, but keys in on potential trip-wires that could derail the modest expansion track.

The most serious risk is the global environment, particularly the potential for Europe?s sovereign debt issues to spiral out of control. That view is shared by Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

The situation may be made worse because households are carrying high loads of debt ? 153 per cent of disposable income in the latest data ? and, the IMF says, Canadian homes are on average 10 per cent overpriced.

?Adverse macroeconomic shocks .... could result in significant job losses, tighter lending conditions, and declines in house prices, triggering a protracted period of weak private consumption as households reduce their debt,? the Washington-based financial organization says.

If that should happen, the IMF said it would be ?appropriate? for federal and provincial governments to return to temporary stimulus spending to brake the fall.

The price of Canadian real-estate has been the subject of much debate, with some arguing that there?s a potential bust in the making and others countering that most local markets, with a few exceptions, home affordability has improved.

The report stresses that a U.S.-style bust in the housing market is unlikely, but a correction would still weigh on the economy by dampening consumer spending and construction activity and jobs.

?Staff estimates that a 15 per cent decline in house prices would reduce the ratio of household net worth to disposable income by 45 percentage points, and could trigger a decline in private consumption by over 1.5 per cent,? the report states. Consumer spending represents about half of Canada?s gross domestic product.

The IMF notes that Ottawa has attempted in the past to cool the housing market by tightening conditions on mortgages.

It said it was told by ?authorities? they would consider additional measures should borrowing by households, which has been slowing of late, return to unsustainable levels. Options include increasing the downpayment from the current five per cent for new mortgages, and requiring lower monthly payments as a percentage of income.

It is not the first time the IMF has flagged Canada?s hot housing market, where average prices climbed by 41 per cent in British Columbia and 29 per cent in Ontario since the recession.

Nor is the IMF alone. The Bank of Canada has repeatedly cautioned prospective new home owners to guard against being lured by record-low interest rates, which makes homebuying more affordable. The central banks warns rates, and hence mortgage payments, will eventually increase.

The IMF also recommends that the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corp., a key backstop to the housing market, undertake a review of its risks. The CMHC, a federal Crown corporation, is the country?s main insurer of residential mortgages.

The report stresses that it is not forecasting a severe correction in the housing market, or a significant downturn in Canada?s economic performance.

The IMF?s base case for Canada still sees it on path to be near or at the top of the class in the G7 group of large, industrial economies.

Canada?s economy is projected to grow by 2.2 per cent this year and a further 1.9 per cent next year, modest expectations that are in line with other forecasters, including the Bank of Canada.

Under this most likely scenario, the unemployment rate will average 7.2 per cent next year, and seven per cent in 2013, the report predicts.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A local high school will have a rooting interest in Sunday Night Football this weekend.

From the sidelines at Marvin Ridge High School as the quarterbacks coac to starting NFL quarterback in just a few weeks, Josh McCown will lace 'em up for the Chicago Bears this weekend.

He was in Marvin Ridge head coach Scott Chadwick's office just a few weeks ago when his agent called and said the Bears wanted to sign him.

Chadwick says all of this couldn't have happened to a better man.

?The Saturday before our first game, we're scouting East Meck at a scrimmage and two days later, this guy had left and gone to the NFL to go to training camp.? But there we are and he's just walking around like a normal old guy and two days later, he's on an NFL practice field,? Chadwick said.

But that short training camp stint in August didn't last too long, and McCown returned to help mentor Chadwick's son, Tyler, who played quarterback this season for the Mavericks, who ended a strong playoff push at 10-2.

McCown last started in 2007.? He played a couple of seasons with the Panthers, only throwing six passes.

As for Sunday, he's ready to go against the Packers, but don't exactly say he's flying high.

?I don't want to get too excited and too amped up because, for me, , absolutely it's a cool story, and a cool moment.? Nut at the same time, I'm a competitor.? I want to win the game.?

McCown and the Bears play at Green Bay at 8:15 p.m. Sunday on NewsChannel 36.

Google To Pay Mozilla $300 Million a Year in Search Deal (NewsFactor)

Google will pay about three times as much as it once did to be the default search engine on Mozilla's Firefox browser. Although Google and Mozilla are keeping the word mum, news reports are leaking details of the deal.

"Under the multi-year agreement, Google Search will continue to be the default search provider for hundreds of millions of Firefox users around the world," said Gary Kovacs, CEO of Mozilla. What Kovacs did not say -- and AllThingsD blogger Kara Swizer is saying -- is this: The Google deal is valued at just shy of $1 billion.

AllThingsD reports that Google will pay just under $300 million a year for the strategic positioning on Firefox. Microsoft was vying for the placement for its Bing decision engine on Firefox. Microsoft also has a deal in place with Facebook.

What About Bing?

"Mozilla was able to involve Microsoft in the discussion and so created some competition for its Firefox 'default' search business. While Google's market share would probably not have been significantly affected by a switch to Bing, it was enough of a threat to generate this deal," said Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence.

Microsoft had been cozying up to Mozilla in recent months. In October, Mozilla and Bing rolled out Firefox for Bing, a customized version of Firefox that sets Bing as the default search engine in the search box and AwesomeBar and makes Bing.com the default home page. But Bing doesn't have a lock down on the custom Firefox experience. Mozilla is also working with United Internet, Twitter, Yahoo and Yandex on that front.

But Alan Eustace, Google's senior vice president of search, cemented the relationship between the browser rivals, at least in the media. "Mozilla has been a valuable partner to Google over the years and we look forward to continuing this great partnership in the years to come," he said. Google has the lockdown on the search engine for the next three years, at least.

Chrome vs. Firefox

Although Microsoft still has the market-leading browser with Internet Explorer, Firefox and the Google Chrome browser together are making strong gains against the incumbent. According to StatCounter, the combined versions of Internet Explorer hold about 50 percent of the global market share. Safari has gained about 5 percent on the desktop, and about 55 percent on mobile devices.

Chrome has usurped Firefox on the browser usage front. According to StatCounter, Chrome boasts 25.7 percent of the global browser market. That's nearly a 5 percent climb from two years ago. Firefox has 25.23 percent. Some industry watchers predict Chrome could draw a larger advantage against Firefox by the end of the first quarter of 2012.

"Google's own Chrome browser is increasingly a threat to Firefox, and Google's earlier, apparent abandonment of Firefox seemed to be a statement that it no longer needed the company," Sterling said. "However Mozilla seems to have played its hand well here and guaranteed its survival for the foreseeable future."

Fake Google Rich Snippets: Next Spam Target

Fake Google Rich Snippets

A WebmasterWorld has SEOs and Webmasters complaining that they are noticing their competitors beginning to fake the rich snippets by planting their own microformats into the source code of the page.

Faking rich snippets is fairly easy. All you need to do is add any of the available markup to the page and if Google accepts it, it shows up in the Google search results.

You can fake things such as reviews, people, products, businesses and organizations, recipes, events, music and much more. In fact, recently, Google has been showing and allowing more and more sites to display these rich snippets in the search results.

Is this an issue for you? One webmaster said:

I have lost count the different ways I have seen reviews being faked. Google does have some safeguards in place but if you are creative enough you can get around them.

If you are not experienced I would beg you to think twice before playing around with this. Most inexperienced (and even some experienced) people end up causing themselves more harm then good when taking these shortcuts.

Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld.

Libyan leader returns to University of Washington (AP)

SEATTLE ? One morning last February, Ali Tarhouni, a professor at the University of Washington's business school, gave his microeconomics students some startling news: He wouldn't be teaching them anymore. He was off to help with the Libyan revolution.

He returned to the university for a brief visit Tuesday following a 10-month absence that saw him serve as the oil and finance minister in the transitional government, hold the hand of a dying 14-year-old boy, and stand bitterly over the battered corpse of Moammar Gadhafi.

"A year ago at this time, I was thinking about what coffee shop would I go to to have a good cup of coffee," Tarhouni said at a news conference. "I've seen a lot of death this last nine months. ... You see a lot of courage, a lot of pain, a lot of pride."

Tarhouni, 60, was exiled from Libya in the 1970s, after he and other students pressed for greater democracy and reforms, and he told his students that he had been on Gadhafi's hit list for three decades.

He earned a doctorate from Michigan State University in 1983 before coming to the University of Washington's Foster School of Business, where he has taught since 1985. He kept pressing for greater freedoms in Libya, without success, and when the revolution finally came, he said, his wife and children knew he would go.

Tarhouni soon found himself heading the oil and finance ministries in the transitional government, backed by rebels who knew his credentials could bring them added legitimacy in the West. He won credit with journalists by speaking honestly about the difficulties and disorganization the rebels faced in those tumultuous days, and became one of the most visible and internationally respected figures in the transitional government.

He declined to continue serving in the government, though, and criticized the country's new leadership as unrepresentative of the populace ? a government he described as unduly influenced by foreign powers, an apparent reference to meddling by Qatar. But on Tuesday he described it as a good government, and said he would continue working to form a new, broad, democratic political party.

"There's really no manual for building a state from scratch," he said. "What makes it really tough is ? we're hoping, we're dreaming, and I believe strongly we will succeed in building a democratic society ? but there's really no history of democracy in Libya. ... I thought I could serve it better by building this political movement."

It isn't clear whether Tarhouni will return to teaching. His stay in Seattle to see his wife and grown children will last just a week.

Among the most memorable moments of his return to Libya from exile were standing in the capital, Tripoli, and declaring it to be free, as well as holding the hand of a crying, injured 14-year-old supporter of Gadhafi, he said.

"I told him, `You're not my enemy,'" Tarhouni said. "He died three hours later."

He was less saddened by the death of Gadhafi.

"I stood over his corpse the same day he was killed," he said. "I thought of the comrades and friends who died in prison and never saw this day. ... I couldn't believe this ugly corpse did this damage to Libya."

Within 15 seconds of getting back in his car, though, he realized Gadhafi was no longer on his mind. There were other things to think of.

(AP) ? Boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a perfect 42-0 in the ring and has dodged significant jail time several times in domestic violence cases in Las Vegas and Michigan.

But his courtroom streak came to an end Wednesday when a Las Vegas judge sentenced him to 90 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to a reduced battery domestic violence charge and no contest to two harassment charges.

The case stemmed from a hair-pulling, punching and arm-twisting argument with his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris while two of their children watched in September 2010.

"Punishment is appropriate," Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa said after a prosecutor complained that Mayweather has been in trouble before and hasn't faced serious consequences.

"No matter who you are, you have consequences to your actions when they escalate to this level of violence," she said.

Good behavior could knock several weeks off Mayweather's sentence. but he will likely serve most of the sentence set to begin Jan. 6, said Officer Bill Cassell, a Las Vegas police spokesman.

Mayweather and his manager, Leonard Ellerbe, declined comment outside the courtroom.

The jail time raises doubts about a possible showdown between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, a champion fighter from the Philippines against whom Mayweather's welterweight success is usually measured.

A long-awaited fight between the two men regarded as among the best of their generation has been delayed by stalling techniques and verbal sparring.

The two men have a defamation lawsuit pending in Las Vegas federal court stemming from statements by Mayweather that he suspects Pacquiao was taking performance-enhancing drugs.

Mayweather returned in September from a 16-month layoff to continue his undefeated record with a controversial knockout of Victor Ortiz in Las Vegas.

Mayweather's promoters have a May 5 date reserved against an as-yet unnamed opponent at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. But if Mayweather is jailed until the end of March, it could cut into the usual eight-plus weeks he takes to train.

Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission, said licenses for all fighters expire on Saturday, and most, including Mayweather, have yet to reapply for next year.

He said Mayweather would be asked on his license application if he was convicted of any misdemeanors or felonies.

Kizer said commissioners would then decide whether to approve or deny his license or hold a hearing to talk about it. The commission has been in contact with prosecutors and Mayweather's lawyers as cases against him have progressed, he said.

"The commissioners are definitely up to speed on it and will be when it comes time to consider any kind of application," he said.

Lee Samuels, a spokesman for Pacquiao's promoter Top Rank and Bob Arum, declined comment on Mayweather's sentencing and its possible effect on a match.

Mayweather, 34, stood still in a striped olive vest and showed no reaction as the judge sentenced him to six months in the Clark County jail then suspended half the term.

She gave him credit for three days previously served in jail and ordered him to complete 100 hours of community service, pay a $2,500 fine and complete a yearlong domestic violence counseling program.

The plea deal avoided trial on felony and misdemeanor that could have gotten Mayweather 34 years in state prison if he was convicted on all counts.

Mayweather also is expected to plead no contest next week to a separate misdemeanor harassment charge involving a 21-year-old homeowner association security guard who was poked in the face during an argument about parking tickets placed on cars outside Mayweather's house.

Mayweather's lawyer, Karen Winckler, said she may appeal what she called the unusual sentence handed down Wednesday.

In court, she called Mayweather "a champion in many areas" and aired a list of his good deeds, including buying toys for children for Christmas and promising to donate $100,000 to breast cancer research by the end of December.

Winckler argued that the public would benefit more if Mayweather performed 100 hours of community service with children.

Mayweather is also on the hook for 40 hours of community service with the Las Vegas Habitat for Humanity Project under a South Carolina federal judge's order for dodging a deposition in a music rights lawsuit.

Mayweather has a Jan. 31 deadline on that court order. Habitat for Humanity official Catherine Barnes said Wednesday that Mayweather had not started to log the hours.

Saragosa said Wednesday she was persuaded to jail Mayweather following his admission that he hit Harris and twisted her arm, and that two of their children, ages 9 and 10, witnessed the attack.

Mayweather threatened to kill or make Harris "disappear," Saragosa said, and their 10-year-old son ran from the house and jumped a back gate to fetch security. Mayweather had taken cellphones belonging to Harris and the two boys.

"Things could have gotten more out of hand than they did," the judge said.

Prosecutor Lisa Luzaich cited three previous domestic violence arrests for scuffles involving Harris, with whom Mayweather has three children, and three cases involving another woman with whom Mayweather has one child.

Fines were of no consequence to Mayweather, Luzaich said.

Mayweather goes by the nickname "Money," and was guaranteed $25 million for the Ortiz fight that won him the WBC's welterweight belt. Mayweather earned more than $20 million in a previous fight against "Sugar" Shane Mosley.

Mayweather has been arrested several times since 2002 in battery and violence cases in Las Vegas and in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Mich.

He was convicted in 2002 of misdemeanor battery stemming from a fight with two women at a Las Vegas nightclub. He received a suspended one-year jail sentence and was ordered to undergo impulse-control counseling.

He was fined in Grand Rapids in February 2005 and ordered to perform community service after pleading no contest to misdemeanor assault and battery for a bar fight.

He was acquitted by a Nevada jury in July 2005 after being accused of hitting and kicking Harris during an argument outside a Las Vegas nightclub.

He was acquitted again in October of misdemeanor allegations that he threatened two homeowner association security guards during a parking ticket argument.

Mayweather also faces a civil lawsuit in Las Vegas from two men who allege he orchestrated a shooting attack on them outside a skating rink in 2009. Police have never accused Mayweather of firing shots and he has never been criminally charged in the case.

LEGAL EDUCATION UPDATE: For Law Schools, A Price To Play The ABA?s Way.

If you want a diploma blessed by the A.B.A. ? and you don?t have rich parents, a plum scholarship or an in-state public law school with lots of taxpayer support ? you are pretty much out of luck. And that is not just a problem for would-be attorneys. The lack of affordable law school options, scholars say, helps explain why so many Americans don?t hire lawyers.

?People like to say there are too many lawyers,? says Prof. Andrew Morriss of the University of Alabama School of Law. ?There are too many lawyers who charge $300 an hour. There aren?t too many lawyers who will handle a divorce at a reasonable rate, or handle a bankruptcy at a reasonable rate. But there is no way to be that lawyer and service $150,000 worth of debt.?

Well, it?s a cartel, and those tend to raise costs.

BLM sued over NV mustang castration, roundup plans (AP)

RENO, Nev. ? A coalition of conservationists and wild-horse activists is suing the government to block its implementation of a precedent-setting plan to castrate hundreds of wild stallions in eastern Nevada.

The lawsuit, filed by the Western Watersheds Project, the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign and the Cloud Foundation, follows the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's decision in July to back off a similar plan to castrate hundreds of wild stallions in Wyoming.

The suit, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., challenges the BLM's plans to remove roughly 1,800 wild horses from the sprawling Pancake Complex near Ely over the next six to 10 years, and to castrate 200 wild stallions before releasing them back to the area as geldings.

The complaint contends the BLM's "scientifically unsound, controversial, untested and radical approaches" to managing mustangs in the 855,000-acre complex violate federal law, and the agency continues to authorize thousands of sheep and cattle to graze on public lands in the area.

"The BLM has violated the law by failing to analyze impacts of domestic livestock and wild horses," said Jon Marvel, executive director of the Idaho-based Western Watershed Project. "I hope this case ends once and for all BLM's illegal bias in favor of cattle and sheep over wild horses and all other native wildlife."

The BLM in July backed off a similar plan to release hundreds of castrated wild stallions back to the range in Wyoming after the same plaintiffs challenged it in court.

BLM spokeswoman JoLynn Worley said the agency views the pilot project as another way to reduce growing horse herds that are damaging rangelands to the detriment of native wildlife.

"That's one thing people always ask about, when they comment on this, whether we can try to do some birth control on stallions in addition to mares," Worley said. "We want to see if this will be one more way to reduce the number of horses and slow down the population."

The BLM plans to remove horses from the Pancake Complex in phases over the next six to 10 years because it lacks sufficient space in its holding facilities, Worley said. Plans call for a reduction in the complex's horse population from about 2,200 to 370 over that period.

"We don't have enough room in our holding facilities to bring in all of those numbers at once. So we're going to break it down into three to four gathers over six to 10 years to make the reductions," Worley said.

Activists have complained the agency's ongoing mass removal of mustangs from public lands has resulted in the stockpiling of horses in long-term facilities in the Midwest at growing taxpayer expense. Captured horses are put up for adoption, but sent to the government-funded facilities if they attract no owners.

There now are more horses in holding facilities ? 41,000 ? than free-roaming horses in 10 Western states ? 33,000. Over the 2011 fiscal year, holding costs accounted for nearly 50 percent of the BLM wild horse and burro program's $75.8 million budget. About half of the West's wild horses are in Nevada.

"After four decades of mismanagement, it's time to draw a line in the sand," said Ginger Kathrens, executive director of the Colorado-based Cloud Foundation. "The agency's policy of destroying America's wild horse herds for the benefit of the livestock industry must come to an end."

But BLM officials maintain public rangelands are not able to withstand the impacts from overpopulated horse herds, which include soil erosion, sedimentation of streams and damage to wildlife habitat.
